What is feminism? Do we still need it? Is it just for girls? What does it mean for philosophy to be
feminist? How is the gendered body relevant to philosophy? Can there be such a thing as a feminist
metaphysics?
In this course we will address these questions with particular focus on a text by Christine Battersby
called “The Phenomenal Woman”. She has a particularly interesting approach to feminist philosophy
as she combines phenomenological with analytic philosophy methods. She presents her argument for
a feminist metaphysics by discussing Aristotle, Kant, Lacan, Derrida, Kierkegaard and Deleuze. This
course will thus allow us to take a fresh perspective on some classic philosophers as well as exploring
the role of third-wave feminism in philosophy.
The book will be supplemented by a few classic papers (also available in German) in feminist philosophy
by authors who Battersby critiques in her text.
No Referate will be required for this course. Instead, students will be asked to prepare short written
answers to a few questions about the weekly reading.
