What is happiness? Can one aim for it? Should it be our goal? What is the difference between lifesatisfaction,
well-being, and happiness? Can these be measured? Should these be measured?
In this course we will explore what past and current philosophers have had to say about these questions,
for example, Jeremy Bentham and J.S Mill on Hedonism, and Aristotle on Eudaimonia (flourishing).
We will examine the positive psychology movement, the possibility of a neuroscience of
happiness, and discuss what problems arise with measuring happiness and well-being.
No Referate will be required for this course. Instead, students will be asked to prepare short written
answers to a few questions about the weekly reading.
