Freuen wir uns eigentlich auf den Herbst? Oder
sind wir nur traurig, dass wir ein neues Jahr auf
den Sommer warten werden müssen? Wir freuen
uns!
Denn kaum eine Zeit ist so gemütlich in der Stadt
zu erleben wie unsere lang gezogenen Herbstmonate.
Sie beschwingen zu letzten Mojitos in Mini und Shorts
und führen uns langsam zu den ersten Glühweinen,
die wir in eine Decke eingemummt und Stiefel tragend
noch an unseren Stadt-Stränden genießen dürfen.
Nach dem vielen Grün bekommen wir endlich bunte
Bäume zu sehen. Ja, wir sind bereit, die Flip Flops
im Schrank zu verstauen und gespannt, was die Mode
uns dieses Jahr für neue Kreationen an kuscheligen
Schals und Mützen beschert. Wir sind nicht mehr
der Sommerhitze ausgeliefert und müssen unsere
Zeit im Liegestuhl nicht mehr wartend auf ein kühles
Lüftchen ausharren. Nein, wir bewegen uns wieder,
damit wir nicht auskühlen, und trauen uns wieder
rein, rein in die warmen Hallen voller Kunst und Kultur.
Die Sommerpause ist vorbei, wir dürfen wieder
in Kino und Theater Platz nehmen. Ja, wir freuen uns
auf den Herbst!

CITY LOVE
A
re we happy that fall is coming? Or are we sad
that another long year has to pass until summer
is coming back? We‘re happy, of course, for there are
so many reasons!
There‘s no other time in the year when the city is
such an enjoyable place as during the long and golden
months of autumn. Wearing shorts or mini skirts we
have our last mojitos and wonder when it will be time
for the first mulled wine. We sit at the city beaches
one last time, tightly wrapped up in warm blankets.
Sick of all the luscious green we finally get to see the
trees shining in the most diverse colors. We‘re even
ready to store away our flip flops in the closet and
eagerly await which creations of scarves and hats
this year‘s fashion collections bring. We‘re no more
at the mercy of the burning summer heat and don‘t
need to spend our time trying to find a shady place
with a cool breeze. In order not to get cold feet we
need to get moving – less and less outside and more
in warm places where we use the opportunity to see
arts and culture. Summer break is over and thus it‘s
time again to go to the movies and enter the theaters.
Yes, we‘re happy that fall is coming!

Dear guests,
it‘s good to see you here regardless of the fact that
everything has become so pricy. Most people hardly
dare to spend any money and only oil stocks seem
to be a reasonable investment. Low-cost flights are
as expensive as never before and fuel is affordable
only in homeopathic doses. Since we need to treat
our environment with care the only thing we can do
without a remorse is travelling by bike.
We do our best to counter these developments:
no extra charges for the high oil price, no hidden
fees and no other increases in prices. Needless to
say that in all A&O houses natural resources are
handled carefully and economically. We will keep on
maintaining costs and energy consumption low so
that there‘s more left for you to enjoy the city, for a

„ATEMLOS UND OHNE GNADE“ IM DRACHENBOOT
BREATHLESS AND MERCILESS DRAGONBOAT RACING
Die Regattastrecke in Berlin-Grünau war schon
Schauplatz vieler großer Bootsrennen. Doch
das, was sich am 28. Juni 2008 dort abspielte, übertraf
alles:
Der 11. BERLIN DRAGONBOAT CITY-CUP 2008,
aber der erste mit Beteiligung eines A&O Teams, das
unter dem vielsagenden Namen „Atemlos und Ohne
Gnade“ an den Start ging. 20 tapferere Recken und
„Reckinnen“ unter der Leitung des Schlagmannes Michael
Rehberg, der sonst durch seine Finanzplanung
bei A&O den Takt angibt, hatten sich durch zwei intensive
Trainingsabende auf den großen Tag vorbereitet.
Am 28.6. saßen dann wirklich alle in einem Boot:
Geschäftsführung, Auszubildende, Marketing, Reservierung
und Rezeption.
Und A&O schlug sich für einen Neuling in dieser
Sportart beachtlich. Auch das durchwachsene Wetter
konnte die Laune und Leistungsbereitschaft der
Paddler nicht trüben. Nach zwei Vorläufen belegte
das A&O Team im Finale der Leistungskategorie den
5. Platz und ließ damit immerhin 21 unmittelbare
Konkurrenten hinter sich. Natürlich wird sich A&O damit
nicht zufriedengeben: Für das nächste Jahr wird
ein Platz auf dem Treppchen angestrebt. Geschäftsführer
Oliver Winter denkt sogar an die Gründung einer
„Drachenboot-Betriebssportgruppe“ – wir wollen
eben immer bei den Besten sein….
The boat race course in Berlin-Grünau has been
the stage to lots of ship rallies. But hardly ever
has it been as exciting as on June 28, 2008.
This year saw the 11th edition of the Berlin Dragonboat
City-Cup and was the first one under participation
of an A&O team bearing the name „Atemlos
und ohne Gnade“ – which means: „breathless and
merciless“. A mixed team out of twenty brave paddlers
had prepared for the great day in two training
sessions under the leadership of drummer Michael
Rehberg, otherwise responsible for financial planning
at A&O.
That Saturday all of them were literally in the
same boat: management, trainees, the marketing department
as well as employees from the reservation
and the reception.
Being a newbie with only little practice the A&O
team performed remarkably well. The mediocre weather
couldn‘t keep the paddling crew from being in
good spirits and on a tide of motivation. After two preliminary
rounds, the A&O team came to the fifth place
in the finals and eventually left 21 opponents behind.
A great success but not enough for A&O – next year
we will strive for a placing on the winner‘s rostrum.
Chief executive Oliver Winter even considers founding
an in-house dragonboat team – we just can‘t help but
trying to be the best...
DIE „5. JAHRESZEIT“ IN MÜNCHEN
MUNICH`S FIFTH SEASON
Was für den Rheinländer der Karneval ist, die „5. Jahreszeit“, das ist in München die Zeit
des Oktoberfestes. Nicht „Alles“ ist anders, aber doch Vieles. München ist im Zentrum
der internationalen Berichterstattung und für Besucher wird es schwer, ein bezahlbares Bett zu
finden. Das A&O City Hackerbrücke, nur wenige Minuten von der Theresienwiese entfernt, stellt
sich wie in jedem Jahr auf den Ansturm der nationalen und internationalen Gäste ein. Hausleiter
Jörg Simon (JS), als erfahrener „Wies´n-Gastgeber“, weiß was auf ihn zukommt.
What’s carnival for the Rhineland is Oktoberfest for Bavaria – the so called fifth season. Not
everything, but a lot is different during this time of the year. At this time, Munich is in the
center of international attention, and it can become quite difficult to find reasonable and affordable
accommodation. The A & O City Hackerbrücke, just a few minutes away from the fairground
(locals call it Wies`n) where the Octoberfest takes place, is preparing once again for the annual
rush of national and international guests. Hostel manager Jörg Simon (JS), an experienced
“Wies`n host”, knows what‘s ahead of him.
IM: Hallo Jörg, gibt es denn bei euch noch Zimmer
für das Oktoberfest 2009?
JS: Viel ist nicht mehr frei, aber es lohnt sich
sicher noch anzufragen, zu einigen Terminen
lässt sich noch was machen.
IM: Wie stellt ihr euch auf diese Tage eine?
JS: Die Zeit ist natürlich für das Personal besonders
spannend, aufregend und anstrengend
zugleich. Wir verstärken alle Schichten, damit
wir die Gäste möglich gut bedienen können.
IM: Was ist während der Oktoberfesttage anders
in München?
JS: Die meisten Gäste wollen auf der Wies´n
natürlich was erleben, es „richtig krachen lassen“,
sicher ist die Stadt in dieser Zeit lauter,
als im Rest des Jahres, aber das kann München
gut vertragen.
IM: Was bedeutet das für die Gäste?
JS Ich will es mal so sagen: Wer Ruhe und Erholung
sucht, ist in dieser Zeit sicher im Allgäu
oder im Bayrischen Wald besser aufgehoben
als in München. Wer aber Lust auf Feiern und
Party hat, der MUSS nach München.
IM: Hello Jörg. Are there still any rooms available
for the Oktoberfest 2009?
JS: There are not many rooms left, but a request
is definitely worth it. For certain days we still
have capacity.
IM: How do you prepare for these days?
JS: Of course that time is exciting and interesting
but at the same time exhausting for
the entire team. Therefore we increase the
number of employees during all shifts to make
sure we offer the best possible service to our
guests.
IM: What’s different about Munich during Oktoberfest?
JS: Of course, the major part of visitors wants
to experience the city and have a blast while
they are here. Surely, the city is a bit louder and
more crowded than on usual days, but I think
Munich can only benefit from that.
IM: What does this mean for the visitor?
JS: Well, let’s put it this way: if you’re looking
for a quiet and peaceful surrounding to recover,
you should do better going to Allgaeu or
the Bavarian Forest. But if you want to party
and have a good time, you HAVE to come to
Munich.

Zu Kaisers Zeiten gab es sogar eine direkte

You find our hotel and hostel across from
Dresden‘s beautiful central station in a building
that used to be a post office at the beginning
of the 20th century.
At that time there was a direct link between
the station and our building but today this tunnel
is filled up. Nevertheless we are the first
address when it comes to low-cost accomodation
in central locations.
Why Leipzig? Is there more to see than only
the Monument of the Battle of the Nations
and the book fair? But of course! For instance,
Leipzig has many famous sons. Johann Sebastian
Bach used to live and work in the city,
Richard Wagner was born here and Goethe
let his „Faust“ play in Auerbach‘s tavern. Martin
Luther used to preach in the Church of St
Thomas, the Gewandhaus concert hall and the
orchestra of the same name make culture
come alive.
In 1839 the first long-distance train connection
to Dresden (where there‘s another A&O,
btw) was opened and in 1989 brave GDR citizens
stood up against the regime and prayed
for peaceful change in the Nikolaikirche. Leipzig
is the city where the reunification of Germany
took its initial spark. The best way to digest
so much history is taking a good dose of
Leipzig‘s night life. Especially Barfussgässchen
is highly recommendable – great dishes and
delicious cocktails all night long.
Every year in August Leipzig plays host to
Europe‘s largest bar festival called Honky
Tonk. When the capital of Saxonia is shaken by
more than 100 bands performing on stages
all over the city, you get to know this seemingly
calm place from a different side.

Our hotel and hostel lies (almost) halfway
between the central station and the downtown
of the capital of the federal state of Northrhine-Westphalia.
Stroll down the famous Königsallee
commonly known as the „Kö`“ and pass
by designer boutiques, superb car dealers and
elegant coffee houses until you arrive at Heinrich-Heine-Platz.
This is where Düsseldorf‘s
Old Town with its historic city center and „the
world‘s longest bar“ begins.
The city has a whole lot more to offer,
though. Just think of the Rhine – probably the
most sung about river in German poetry. A
ride on a ship or a walk through the floodplains
is as much an indispensable part of a trip to
Düsseldorf as the carnival and alt beer.
The whole city turns into a madhouse when
„the fifth season of the year“ comes up. Between
Altweiber (Women‘s Carnival Day) on
November 11 and Ash Wednesday in February
people dance, party and freak out on every

Unsere spontane Überlegung:
ein Kurztrip nach
Berlin sollte es sein! Daher
musste vorher gut überlegt
werden, was wir alles in so
kurzer Zeit erobern wollten!
So viel wie möglich, das
war klar. Auf jeden Fall das
Element Wasser und Sonnenschein,
denn der Wetterbericht
versprach die
passenden Temperaturen.
Vorweg, wenn man mit dem
Auto nach Berlin fährt, lohnt
es sich, an einer nicht ganz
üblichen Rast- und Gedenkstätte
in Marienborn, einer
ehemaligen DDR Grenzstelle,
eine Pause zu machen
und Geschichte direkt zu
erfahren. Die zahlreichen
anschaulichen Dokumentationen
erinnern uns daran,
dass Berlin nicht immer eine
Stadt des kulturellen Austauschs
war und dass wir
froh sein können, so frei reisen
zu dürfen.
In Berlin angekommen, haben
wir erstmal mit einem
Besuch des Wannsees begonnen;
aber nicht an einer
der Badestellen, sondern direkt
auf dem See mit einem
gemieteten Segelboot, dem

Having only little time we
needed to plan accurately
what exactly we wanted to
discover. As much as possible,
of course – but what
in particular? The weather
report promised high temperatures
so we decided to
include sunshine and water.
Before arriving in the German
capital by car you pass
by the memorial site of Marienborn,
a former GDR border
checkpoint. A stop here
is worthwhile because the
site is an impressive reminder
that Berlin has not always
been the city of cultural
exchange. An exhibition documents
the place‘s history
and when we leave we‘re glad
that we don‘t live in times of
the Cold War anymore.
When we reached Berlin
we first paid a visit to
Wannsee, one of the largest
lakes in town. But instead of
just hanging around at the
lakeside we hit the lake with
the „Monarch“, a rented sailing
boat. Royally floating on
the water we get a totally
Monarch. Königlich auf dem Wasser gleitend
lernt man den See aus einem anderen Blickwinkel
kennen; man kann die zahlreichen Groß- und
Kleinboote beobachten, die Sonne genießen,
Picknick auf dem Boot mit Blick auf die Pfaueninsel
halten, auf der sogar weiße Pfauen
gesichtet worden sein sollen. Was will man
mehr an so einem Tag? Das Großstadtleben
erobern natürlich! Also flugs mit dem Zug zum
Hauptbahnhof, durch den Tiergarten unter den
riesigen Gingkobäumen entlang gebummelt,
bis zum Sonycenter hinunter. Und dort das
Element Luft erobert: im Daimler-Chrysler-
Turm mit dem schnellsten Fahrstuhl Europas
(warum unnötig Zeit mit Treppensteigen verschwenden;-))
bis nach oben und dann – die Suche
nicht aufgeben! – die letzte Treppe zu Fuß
besteigen, denn der Ausblick über die Stadt
lohnt sich. Einen besseren Überblick bekommt
man fast nirgendwo sonst. Unser nächster
Punkt: die Neue Nationalgalerie – aus der Luft
gesucht, auf dem Boden gefunden, also los zu
den „Neuen“ Meistern des 20. Jahrhunderts.
Übrigens stehen die dortigen Wärter und
Studenten gerne für die ein oder andere Fra-

different perspective onto the Wannsee. We
watch other big and small boats pass by, have
an on-board picnic, enjoy the sun and lots of
other relaxing activities. On Pfaueninsel there
are peacocks – even the rare white one is reported
to have been observed. What more do
you wish on a day like this? How about taking
the plunge into metropolitan life? We take the
S-Bahn that carries us to the heart of the city.
From Hauptbahnhof we stroll through the Tiergarten,
Berlin‘s green lung and down to Sony
Center at Potsdamer Platz. The tower of the
Daimler-Chrysler building is nearby and can be
accessed via the stairways. But we all agree
about using Europe‘s fastest elevator to get to
the top and are rewarded with a breathtaking
view over the whole city spanning almost until
the horizon. We‘re airborne while the city lies
in front of us like it was a map of itself. We
pick our next destination, the Neue Nationalgallerie
and find it easily once we‘re back on the
ground. The museum hosts changing exhibitions
of masters of art from the 20th century.
By the way: the conservators and the students
employed there are always pleased to answer

Werke zur Verfügung. Nur fragenden Menschen
kann geholfen werden und in Berlin hilft
man gern – diese Erfahrung haben wir wirklich
mehr als einmal gemacht. Einfach neugierig
sein! Also was macht eigentlich die Berliner
Jugend, wenn die Museen am frühen Abend
schließen? Um dies herauszufinden, setze man
sich einfach auf den Platz vor dem Kunstgewerbemuseum
und warte ab. Nach kurzer Zeit
schon wird es von mutigen Skateboardern wimmeln,
die ihre Stunts vor der Berliner Skyline
vorführen (Publikum scheint gerne erwünscht
zu sein). Die Szenerie wird vielleicht noch von
Kunststudenten gezeichnet und plötzlich findet
man seine staunenden Blicke selber als Teil
dieser Skizze wieder! Nach der Eroberung der
Elemente Wasser, Sonne, Luft und Erde haben
wir letztendlich unseren Hunger in einem der
vielen Restaurants in den Hackeschen Höfen
bezwungen. Wir sind Helden und nun selbst ein
klitzekleines Stück Berlin und bedanken uns für
die tolle Stimmung in der Stadt!

What do Berlin‘s young people do when the museums
close early in the evening? In order to
find out all we had to do was hold on in front
of the Kunstgewerbemuseum and wait for the
things to come. After a while the place was
full of daring skateboarders performing their
stunts in the setting of Berlin‘s skyline. Taking
a look around we noticed several people drawing
on large-sized sketch blocks. When we went
closer we realized that they are art students
portraying the persons around them – amongst
others we found our own amazed faces.
After having conquered the water, the air
and the ground in just one day we satisfied our
hunger in one of the countless restaurants at
„Hackesche Höfe“. Berlin made us a very warm
welcome and we‘re happy for the opportunity
to experience all this – we will come back since
there is so much more to discover.
