Furthermore, the expansion plan provides for a regional headquarters established in Shanghai that will help develop “our sales, our production plans and our strategies for the Chinese tyre market.” Kumho’s investments in detail (1) Nanjing: The tyre factory in Nanjing (Jiangsu province) was established ten years ago and had an initial production capacity of 3 million tyres. By the end of 2005 Kumho had expanded its first tyre factory on Chinese soil up to 13 million PC and LT tyres annually. There is no information on how much Kumho has invested in Nanjing; the production unit was established under Nanjing Kumho Tire Co., Ltd. (2) Nanjing: At its Nanjing site Kumho laid down the foundation stone for its second tyre factory there at the beginning of this year. When “Nanjing 1” is exclusively producing PC and LT tyres, “Nanjing 2” will have an annual output of about 300,000 truck and bus radial tyres per year. These production capacities – the first for truck tyres in China – will be available from next year onwards and will mainly be used to supply tyres to the local Chinese tyre market. Kumho Tires is investing $99 million in this TBR factory. (3) Tianjin: After Kumho entered the Chinese tyre market with its own production facilities in 1996 (see above; Nanjing 1), plans for a second tyre factory were close at hand. Together with Nanjing in Southern China Kumho picked Tianjin in Northern China as a second location for a new tyre factory, which started its operations in 1997; Tianjin is one of China’s provincial-level municipalities. As a result of the financial crisis China experienced in 1999 Kumho decided to sell its assets in its Tianjin joint venture factory to Bridgestone the following year, which helped decrease its debts. In December 2005 Kumho began construction on another new passenger car tyre factory in Tianjin. Während in „Nanjing 1“, also der ersten Reifenfabrik am Standort, ausschließlich Pkw- und Llkw-Reifen gefertigt werden, will das koreanische Unternehmen in der neuen Fabrik „Nanjing 2“ jährlich rund 300.000 Lkw-Reifen fertigen. Die neuen Produktionskapazitäten – im Übrigen die ersten für Lkw-Reifen in China – werden ab 2008 zur Verfügung stehen und sollen weitestgehend der Befriedigung der lokalen Nachfrage auf dem chinesischen Reifenmarkt dienen. Kumho investiert 99 Millionen US-Dollar in die Fabrik. (3) Tianjin: Kumho kam bereits 1995 nach China und positionierte damals zwei Reifenwerke im Land. Eins entstand 1996 in Nanjing im Süden Chinas (siehe oben), das zweite 1997 im Norden in Tianjin, einer von vier regierungsunmittelbaren Städte in China. Im Zuge der asiatischen Finanzkrise 1999 musste Kumho die Jointventure-Anteile an der ursprünglichen Tianjin-Fabrik aber 2000 (an Bridgestone) verkaufen, um Schulden abbauen zu können. Im Dezember 2005 hatte Kumho dann mit den Bauarbeiten zu einem neuen Pkw-Reifenwerk – ebenfalls in Tianjin – begonnen. which had an initial production capacity of 5.25 million units. Production started in July 2006. During the course of this year Kumho is expanding its production capacities in the Tianjin Economic and Technological Development Area up to 7 million PC and LT tyres per year. These are mainly UHP tyres, which are not only sold on the Chinese replacement market but also to OE customers outside of China. On the occasion of commencement of production last year Kumho’s general manager in China announced that the company plans to invest an additional $130 million in the Tianjin facility. (4) Changshun: In May 2006 – two months before the new factory in Tianjin started operation – Kumho laid down the foundation stone for its third tyre factory in China. In Changshun (Jilin province) in the northeast part of China Kumho has since that time invested more than $150 million into this PC tyre factory. The initial production capacity of 3.15 million units will mainly serve local OE customer China First Automotive Group (FAW), a minority shareholder in the Changshun facility. FAW is also producing Audi brand cars under a joint venture with Volkswagen. The factory will start producing tyres in the course of this year. (5) R&D Centre, Tianjin: This new global Kumho R&D centre – one of three such centres – will be inaugurated this September. Kumho Tires has invested about $30 million in this facility. Thus, when Kumho’s three production facilities are operating at the end of this year, the Korean manufacturer will have an annual capacity of at least 21 million units in these factories. Following a report cited above, this still is less than what Hankook produces in China (about 24 million units) and also less than what Giti Tire produces there (about 23 million units). However, in 2009 Kumho plans to catch up with Hankook in China. Then both big Korean tyre manufacturers will produce about 30 million tyres in China per year; at the same time Giti Tire will produce 25 million units. In addition, during the next decade Kumho plans further investments in China in order to close its own production gap on the Chinese tyre market, in particular because Kumho also serves export markets such as Europe from these facilities. Furthermore, Kumho also operates five logistics centres in China (mostly in major cities along the coastline) plus ten offices. The Korean manufacturer also operates about 100 “Automaster Kumho Service Centers”, an equity retail chain, and supplies tyres to more than 1,000 retailers that cooperate with Kumho. In Changchun (Provinz Jilin) im Nordosten des Landes investiert der koreanische Hersteller seither über 150 Millionen Dollar in eine Pkw-Reifenfabrik. Die Kapazität von schließlich rund 3,15 Millionen Reifen sei überwiegend für die Erstausrüstung beim chinesischen Automobilhersteller China First Automotive Group (FAW) bestimmt, der an dem Werk auch eine Minderheitsbeteiligung hält und im Rahmen eines Jointventures mit VW auch Audi-Modelle fertigt. Das Werk wird noch in diesem Jahr die Produktion aufnehmen. (5) F&E-Zentrum, Tianjin: Das neue globale Entwicklungszentrum des koreanischen Reifenherstellers in China – eines von drei solcher Zentren weltweit – wurde im vergangenen September eingeweiht; Kumho hat dazu am Standort rund 30 Millionen Dollar investiert. Wenn Kumhos drei Reifenfabriken in diesem Jahr also produzieren, wird das koreanische Unternehmen in China über Produktionskapazitäten von wenigstens 21 Millionen Einheiten verfügen. Dies ist dem oben zitierten Bericht zufolge im aktuellen Jahr zwar immer noch weniger als Hankook (rund 24 Mio. Reifen) und auch noch weniger als Giti Tire (rund 23 Mio. Reifen), spätestens im übernächsten Jahr will Kumho dann aber mit Hankook gleichziehen. Dann werden beide großen koreanischen Hersteller über rund 30 Millionen Reifen in China produzieren können, während Giti Tire dann über eine Produktionskapazität von in etwa 25 Millionen Einheiten verfügen wird. Auch für die Jahre danach sieht Kumho weitere Investitionen in China vor, um die Produktionslücke lokal zu schließen, zumal Kumho aus seinen chinesischen Fabriken auch Exportmärkte bedient und bedienen wird. Darüber hinaus betreibt Kumho in China fünf Logistikzentren (hauptsächlich in Städten in den wirtschaftlich starken Küstenregionen) sowie zehn Büros. Dazu gehören noch rund 100 „Automaster Kumho Service Centers“ im Retailgeschäft sowie über 1.000 mit Kumho kooperierende Händler.
