European Wholesalers Active in China For Years
Low prices and even lower quality?
Europäische Großhändler in China seit Jahren aktiv
Niedrige Preise und noch niedrigere Qualität?
When we Europeans today talk about China and the Chinese
tyre market there are principally two things we discuss:
the price of these products and their quality. In previous
years importers and wholesalers were able to make good
margins on tyres made in China. Today, the same tyres are
offered almost everywhere and more and more often we
think that prices are kept down artificially by means of
dumping. It is, in particular, the prices for HP and UHP tyres
from China that allowed for and are still deemed to allow for
higher margins – and these are now coming under pressure
in export markets. Prices are clearly in decline. At least two
thirds of the 180 million passenger car radial and light truck
radial tyres produced in China last year were exported and
it will take at least another five years until domestic demand
will surpass export figures in China. In parallel with falling
prices for Chinese made tyres, producers of these tyres
occasionally stumble into the headlines of Western media
because of a product quality that’s below average. And furthermore,
Chinese manufacturers have frequently been involved
in patent rights infringements regarding counterfeiting.
In particular there is one European company with concerns about
the current situation of falling prices: Deldo Autobanden
N.V. from Antwerp, Belgium. This wholesaler
(turnover of 250 million euros and more than 6
million units sold in 2006) has had a close relationship
with the Chinese tyre manufacturer
Guangzhou South China Rubber Tire Co. Ltd.
(SCT) for five years. South China Tire exclusively
supplies the brands Wanli (now even available
in run-flat variants), Sunny and, very recently,
Deldo’s private brand Fortuna. Although
Stani Delcroix is convinced that “Chinese
tyres have a future in European markets,” he
has an eye on the immense up-built of additional
production capacities for PC tyres in China.
Almost every manufacturer of radial tyres
is currently undertaking large scale increases
in production capacity. One of the consequences
is that the domestic Chinese market – in
particular with regards to HP and UHP tyres –
simply cannot keep up with this development,
although demand is also growing strongly. In
such a situation, where the Chinese tyre mark-
Gerade
chinesischen Produkten machen chinesische Hersteller
