World Ayrshire Federation(WAF)Ayrshire New ZealandDecember 2009ANNUAL MEETING 2009Over 160 members of Ayrshire New Zealand gathered in Hamilton from 2 – 5 June tocelebrate the 100th Annual Meeting and Centenary Conference. Members gatheredtogether on Tuesday 2 June at the Novotel Tainui in Hamilton, and the Conferencekicked off with an opening dinner attended by over 140 members and invited guests,including representatives of the other dairy breed societies. The Conference was openedby Hamilton Mayor Bob Simcock and the Conference Cake was cut by AssociationPresident Gordon Glentworth along with Joe Corbett of Morrinsville who has been amember since 1946.On Wednesday 3 June delegates travelled by coach to the Matangi Sports Museum,followed by Cambridge Stud, where Zabeel was proudly on show. Lunch at the KaipakiHall was followed by wine tastings and a tour of the local winery, Mystery Creek Wines.Then it was on to Kiteroa Ayrshires, Ohaupo, for a herd visit and the Conference Salethat evening.32 lots averaged $2,547, with 12 in-calf heifers av. $2,225, 2 cows av. $3,700, 17yearling heifers av. $2,670. In addition, the 'pick of all calves' from Kauri Ayrshires soldfor $2,000 and 2 embryo packages averaged $219 per embryo. Top price of the salewent to the Brookview pick where vendors were able to choose from 5 full ET sisters onbehalf of Vince & Sheridan Steiner of Brookview Ayrshires, Tokoroa. Four of the calveswere on show at the sale. Purchased for $7,000 by Murray and Lyn Harnett ofDargaville with Andrew Reyland, this calf is sired by Woodland View Pardner ET(Canada) out of noted show cow Brookview Blue Secrecy, Ex3. Two yearling heifersmade the top price of $3,600 - Carmelglen RP Brigitte (s. Sanrosa Royal Phillip),purchased from vendor Alastair Thomson by Zane Kite of Kiteroa Ayrshires, Ohaupo,and Lodore Phils Snow ET (s. Sanrosa Royal Phillip) purchased from vendor Lodore FarmLtd, Okaihau, by Colleen Vincent , Matamata. Top priced in-calf heifer was GreenlanePhils Jewel (s. Sanrosa Royal Phillip) purchased from vendor Tahuna Pastoral Co Ltd byPekatahi Ayrshires of Whakatane for $4,000. Top priced cow sold on behalf of David &Pip Fullerton, Hamilton back to her breeders Valendale Ayrshire Ltd, Gordonton for$4,100 was Valendale Dollie (s. Valendale Lustre). Dollie is a rising 4 year old cow andproduced 305 kg fat and 265 kg protein in 274 days as a 3 year old.Another fine day followed on Thursday 4 June as delegates travelled to ValendaleAyrshires at Gordonton for a herd visit, then the coaches travelled to Waharoa and atour of the Open Country Cheese factory with lunch at Kaimai Cheese. Back toHamilton for a free afternoon, followed by dinner that evening at Windy Ridge,Ohaupo.The Annual General Meeting was held at the Novotel on Friday 5 June, followed by aformal banquet in the Hotel that evening attended by over 130 members and guests.With a Scottish theme the banquet included pipes, a haggis ceremony, highland andcountry dancing displays and a fantastic Celtic band for the evening. The CentenaryConference was a memorable week with almost 200 members and guests involved.President Gordon Glentworth of Kaponga was re-elected for his fifth consecutive yearas President. Gordon has served on the Board of Ayrshire New Zealand since 1989 andalso served a term as President in the late 1990’s. Gordon is a Senior Judge and TOPClassifier and heads Ayrshire New Zealand’s breeding Division, Semayr BreedingServices.Retiring Director for Ward 9 (Southland/Otago), Paul Duffy of Wyndham, waspresented with an Honorary Life Membership, an award that was met with a standingovation by the members present. Paul has represented the Southland and Otago areafor 18 years as a Director, and in that time served as President from 1999 - 2001 and asthe Convenor of a number of Committees. Paul is a Senior Judge, and he and wife Alisonreceived a Distinguished Members Award in 2005. Paul, Alison and son Brendan farmMayo Downs, a 700 cow farm at Seaward Downs, near Wyndham. Paul is also aSouthland District Councillor.Jonathan Glentworth of Sanrosa Ayrshires was awarded the Bell-Booth Achiever Award.Jonathan (19) is a young farmer who is well on the way to achieving personal goals andambitions, set just a few years ago. Since leaving school three years ago, Jonathan hasbeen working on his parents’ farm at Riverlea. The predominately pedigree Ayrshire herdhas been bred for high production and Jonathan has been interested in developing theherd since he was old enough to lead a calf. In 2005 Jonathan won the Ayrshire YoungJudge Competition for the Arran Trophy at the Waikato Royal Show and placed 4th inthe Worldwide Sires All Breeds Young Judge Competition. Jonathan attended anAustralian Youth Camp during International Dairy Week in Tatura, Victoria, in 2007. Atthe 2008 Christchurch Royal Show Jonathan was placed 3rd in the all-breeds judgingcompetition. This year he was invited to be Associate Judge at Rotorua, and is now closeto attaining his Judges Ticket. Jonathan has travelled extensively with his father toinspect Ayrshire cattle. Earlier this year Jonathan was one of 10 delegates (from sevencountries) who attended the Canadian Ayrshire AGM and had to give a presentationabout their respective country and way of farming. In February 2009 Jonathan won theFredrickson Trophy for the North Island Young Handler (senior section) at the NorthIsland Championships held at Northern Wairoa. Jonathan’s long term goal is to eventuallytake over the home farm and herd and to continue to breed top cows which producewell and look good enough to show, while promoting the Ayrshire breed.The Kiteroa Trophy for the persons contributing the most to the breed during the yearwas presented to Graeme Knight - previous staff member, Board Director, Senior Judgeand Honorary Life Member. Many in the industry will know Graeme from his 25 yearsas Manager of the Association from 1969 until 1995, his continued interest sinceretirement as a Director of the Waikato ward from 2000 to 2002 and his regularcontributions to the New Zealand Ayrshire Bulletin through his ‘Herds of Yesteryear’series. However, the Kiteroa Trophy is presented for his particular efforts over the last 12months during the preparations for the Centenary Conference. Almost single handedly,Graeme is responsible for the Ayrshire Centenary Book. This 104 page book documentsthe history of both the breed and the Association in New Zealand, it’s prominent cowsand bulls, families (both cows and people), identities and many other items of interest.Winners in the inaugural Ayrshire Youth Achiever competition were also announced.Young members entered a points based competition to win cash prizes, earning pointsfor membership, shows, Association competition entries and numerous other activities.Winners in the three age groups were Sarah Leech of Atlantic Ayrshires, Tirau (18-30years), Jamie Baxter of Stenvale Ayrshires, Tirau (13-17 years) and Liam Newton ofLonestar Ayrshires, Stratford (5-12 years).Production Awards also presented included the Mayfield Trophy for the top producingherd in New Zealand (over 50 pedigree Ayrshires), which for the first time was presentedto two herds – Roma Farm Ltd, Morrinsville (131 cows av. 281 kg fat, 219 kg protein in280 days) and Oliver Partnership of Foxton (73 cows av. 6239 litres milk, 278 kg fat, 222kg protein in 290 days). The Smith Family Trophy for the Top Pedigree Cow (Fat &Protein) has been won a daughter of the cow that has taken this trophy for the last fewseasons. Luckville Par Debe, Exc, averaged 11022 litres milk, 509 kg fat, 370 kg protein(879 kg milksolids) in 305 days at 5 years. Par Debe is owned by the Carrington Familyof Dannevirke and also earnt the awards for top cow in the following categories - fat,protein, milk yield and dollar earning.
