An Overview of the
Department’s Activities
Homogeneously catalyzed hydrogenations and hydroformylations
play a pivotal role in several synthetic routes leading to
chemical and pharmaceutical commodities as well for the production
of odours, fragrances and agrochemicals. In particular
the hydrogenation is a unique tool for the synthesis of alkanes,
alcohols and amines from different starting material. The hydroformylation
represents the largest homogeneously catalyzed
transformation in industrial scale and is used for the conversion
of alkenes into aldehydes being important educts for the manufacture
of amines, carboxylic acids or alcohols. A particular advantage
of homogeneous catalysts is the possibility to run the
reactions with high chemo-, regio- and stereoselectivity. In the
department an especially important field is the preparation of
optically pure compounds by asymmetric catalysis.
