COVERSTORY
einstellen? Sicherlich, indem jetzt agiert wird, anstatt später
reagieren zu müssen.
So eröffnete am 18. September 2008 Bezirksvorsteherin Gabriele
Votava gemeinsam mit Umweltstadträtin Mag. Ulli Sima den
neuen Kabelwerk Park.
Statistics Austria predicted on 17 October 2005: “In the long term,
the number of people aged 60 years and above will increase by
two thirds. The proportion of senior citizens over 75 years of age
will also rise dramatically. The number of children, by contrast,
will decrease by 8% in the long term.“ This trend is unstoppable.
However, how can municipalities and public institutions adapt and
respond to this challenge? Certainly by acting now instead of having
to react when it is almost too late.
Consequently, District Director Gabriele Votava opened the new Kabelwerk
(Cable Works) Park together with Mag. Ulli Sima, Executive City Councillor
for the Environment, on 18 September 2008. Following the planning
guidelines of Vienna Parks and Gardens, landscape architect DI Anna
Detzlhofer has created a total work of art in terms of landscape design,
which distinguishes itself by a large sand area, various seating and lounge
furniture as well with a hitherto unrivalled huge climbing frame.
A spokesperson of Vienna Parks and Gardens said that great efforts were
being made to bring all generations on board. Therefore, Kabelwerk
Park features a playground for senior citizens: Senior Aktiv.
Besides, there are girls’ playgrounds, which were designed
in line with the requirements on gender mainstreaming,
as well as playgrounds for disabled
children. The creed of MA 42 is that nonassertive
groups should be able to claim play
space for themselves.
Kabelwerk Park
Vienna’s first cross-generational playground
– a play park for young and old
Kabelwerk Park
alike. As it is standard today with all park and playground design
projects in Vienna, public consultation took place also on Kabelwerk
Park to collect the views and identify all requests of future
park users. After consulting the residents of Kagran, everything
was clear to the planners: for the first time, a play park for all generations,
aged 0 to 99 years, was to be created. With fitness equipment,
a “Philosophenwald” (“Philosopher’s Forest”) net structure,
climbing nets, a garden room, water features and much more.
“With this park, we are opening up completely new avenues for playground
design in Vienna; it offers a wide range for really all user groups,” said Executive
City Councillor for the Environment, Ulli Sima, on the occasion of
the opening of the park. In co-operation with the Vienna Sports University,
Department of Sports Biomechanics, under the direction of Ao. Univ. Prof.
Dipl. Ing. Dr. techn. Arnold Baca, a “Cross-Generational Activity Park”
was implemented at Kabelwerk Park to foster social interaction between
young and old.
The Cross-Generational Activity-Park is not just some new
kind of outdoor recreation facility or leisure park. The
company Moser Spielgeräte GmbH was elected the
most creative crafts enterprise in Salzburg in
2007 for its implementation of this unique
concept.
The Vienna Parks and Gardens Department
attaches great importance to the pilot
scheme.
Co-operation with the development partners,
above all with the University of
Vienna, will be continued in the long
