April 2013Munich Philharmonic Asia Tour: Touring DreamI‘ve been touring in Japan with orchestras fromabroad for exactly fifty years. On this tour withthe Munich Philharmonic, we shall have given12 concerts in 9 cities in 3 days. The black cloud of bumpy travel, freezing or boilingwhatever, constant change of hotels, and thetime-change trauma usually make touring a nightmare. But not in Japan. Take today for example...corner room overlooking the American Embassyin Tokyo, a BMW ride to the rail station, 90 minuteson the silent, cushy bullet train,a two-hour nap (after a sushi snack), a quickwarm-up rehearsal and concert in a hall withperfect acoustics, a sail back on the bullet train, another float in the BMW and goodnight. This is heaven. And we got to play Beethoven!29. April 2013It’s over. Last night, April 28, we gave the finalconcert of our nine-city, twelve-concert, fourprogram, three soloists, Asian tour… in Guangzhou,China (used to be called Canton). After the wild sounds of the encore, Bizet’s madcapFarandole Dance and the cheers that followedhad all faded away, my colleagues of the MunichPhilharmonic and I gathered to celebrate, clinkingbeer glasses and taking iPhone pics. We werehappy campers.Yesterday morning I had been driven from Shenzhento Guangzhou, some 140 kilometers of highway,on either side of which stood tall, in countlessshapes and patterns, endless groupings offactories, skyscrapers and high-risers. All 140kilometers of road… not a gap anywhere…Upon arrival, had checked into the Shangri-LaHotel where the culinary offering of a superb Japaneserestaurant awaited me. (Conversely inTokyo, one finds fabulous Chinese restaurants!)Rested up and waded into the last one… witheven more youngsters in the audience, totallyfocused.
