The daughter of anaffluent farmer spurns a rich suitor out of love for the son of a poor farmer; Dreyertells this tale with a lightness of touch not usually associated with him. The summerlandscape, running water, shafts of sunlight and shimmering leaves – these are thehallmarks of the film’s visuals.DIE BRAUT VOM DAALENHOF wurde während einiger Sommermonatein Norwegen für eine norwegisch/schwedischeGesellschaft gedreht. Shot in one Norwegian summer, it isregarded as the film where Dreyer comes closest to Stiller, itssensuality and spontaneity surpassing Stiller in Dreyer’s “attentionto texture and density of emotion” as Tom Milne putsit. In fact critics have speculated that the comparative absenceof repression, the film’s celebration of “innocent” adolescentsexuality, might be connected with Dreyer’s improvisationalfilm making procedures. The story concerns the love of Torre,a poor farmer’s son, for Berit, the daughter of a neighbouringrich farmer. The families are symbolically separated by a riverwhich is a setting for the mise-en-scène of desire, including afinal bravura struggle against its current. The disruption whichthis narrative is designed to evacuate or contain is providedby the central couple’s insufficiently socialised desire in theface of an excessively repressive patriarchy.Mark Nash: Dreyer, London 1977
This adaptation of a Noël Coward play was notone of Hitchcock’s favourites among his films. It has been difficult to form an independentopinion, as the film has survived only in 16mm prints. However, the new digitalrestoration finally allows us to appreciate more of the original visual qualities ofthis story of a woman who undergoes a scandalous and very public divorce beforetrying to start her life again abroad.LEICHTLEBIGEASY VIRTUEGroßbritannien / Great Britain1927Regie / Directed by:Alfred HitchcockDrehbuch / Written by:Eliot Stannard, nach dem Stückvon / based on the play byNoël CowardKamera / Cinematography by:Claude McDonnellDarsteller / Cast:Isabel JeansFranklin DyallEric Bransby WilliamsIan HunterRobin IrvineFrank ElliottProduktion / Produced by:Gainsborough Pictures,LondonPremiere: 5.3.1928Format: digitalFarbe / Color:schwarzweiß / black and whiteLänge / Running time:78 minZwischentitel / Intertitles:englisch I EnglishMusik / Music by:Joachim Bärenz (piano)Noch eine kleine interessante Sache aus diesem Film. François Truffaut: Mr. Hitchcock, wie haben Sie das gemacht?,München 1973EASY VIRTUE, while using a few Coward lines, is transposed– and at least largely by Hitchcock’s very pronounced stresson visuals – into a wholly filmic entity. The entire first half ofthe film is an expanded visualisation of a few lines of expositorydialogue from the play, while the play’s talkie finale isjettisoned in favor of a visual climax. While it isn’t a tricky film,Hitchcock constantly uses visual touches – and jokes – to getaway from the stage; the cutaway to the two horses “necking”in an otherwise ordinary love scene, using two shots of luggageat a railway station – a French poodle on one set, cuttingto an English bulldog on the next – to indicate a changeof locale; and most effective of all, the conveyance of informationabout a vital telephone call purely through the delightedreactions of an eavesdropping telephonist. A lesspopular and famous Hitchcock milestone than THE LODGERcertainly – but also a more accomplished one.William K. Everson: Programme Notes, New York 197325
