TWO WORLDS is arecent rediscovery and shows Murata’s mastery of characterisation with an eco nomyof draughtsmanship. As was HIS SNATCHED-OFF LUMP, this film is based on a folktale; in this case, it is Aesop’s fable of the grasshopper and the ant. Alexander Jacoby, Johan Nordström, in: Pordenone SilentFilm Festival 20116Aesop’s fables, with their animal characters and brief, pointednarratives conveying clear moral messages, constitute idealmaterial for animated shorts. In the United States, Paul Terry’sAESOP’S FABLES straddled the silent and early sound eras, running from 1921 to 1933. Japanese animators too seizedon the Greek writer’s sardonic stories, which had been knownin Japan since the late 16th century, when they were introducedto the country by Portuguese missionaries.TWO WORLDS is a version of another of Aesop’s best-knownfables, The Ant and the Grasshopper, contrasting the industriousant with the idle grasshopper, and concluding that “Hewho sings in summer will cry in winter”. This tale, or itsretelling by the French fabulist La Fontaine, also formed thebasis for animations by Georges Méliès, Ladislas Starewitch, and Lotte Reiniger.Alexander Jacoby, Johan Nordström, in: Pordenone SilentFilm Festival 2011

The man’sleering devotion to the ladies is expressed by his ire at a passingcustomer stepping on his foot. The dozing lady deflatesthe impression of hilarity that the hot faces of the men mightsuggest. Already there is the Hitchcock leg shot — glamorous, alluring. There is even a spiral staircase down which the girlsclamber in the first shot of the film. Hitchcock masks off thesides of the screen, as if the whole world were shrunk to thatstaircase. He develops his story in terms of four contrastingsettings, each with its own character and moral values: thePleasure Garden, the showgirl’s modest flat, the honeymoonsetting at Lake Como, and the jungle proper. „The PleasureGarden“ is a false image of the jungle, as the Lake Comoscenes will provide a false romantic harmony, and as the ambitiousshowgirl’s palace is a false parallel to the modest girl’shomey flat.Maurice Yacowar: Hitchcock’s British Films, Hamden 19777
