Moving through nature by foot is<br />

the most popular outdoor activity<br />

in Germany. Generally that<br />

isn’t a new discovery but that<br />

e.g. the German Hiking Association<br />

(Deutsche Wanderverband) (DWV))<br />

called out the 14 Mai 2015 as the ‘day of<br />

hiking’ for the first time clearly shows how<br />

popular the activity in nature really is. One<br />

assumes that approx.. 34 million people in<br />

Germany go hiking. And: More and more<br />

young people are taking a liking to hiking.<br />

An increasingly new phenomenon, hiking<br />

was seen as a dusty “old people’s sport” up<br />

to now after all. But today one sees more<br />

and more young groups who seek distraction<br />

from their stressful everyday life by hiking,<br />

far away from mobiles, laptops, Twitter etc.<br />

Formerly hiking was about “making headway”,<br />

it was about sportive performances,<br />

about badges. Today it’s about experiencing<br />

nature. About a world one can touch, smell,<br />

hear, feel. This is also confirmed by Thomas<br />

Kamm, country manager Germany of Merrell:<br />

“Many young people are drawn out to<br />

nature and into the mountains again. That’s<br />

good and makes us happy. However many<br />

have other motivation in focus than before.<br />

Mammut shows a light shoe which is as<br />

well wearable during hiking as on travels<br />

or during walking. Furthermore it is<br />

manufactured from the most modern §D<br />

knitted fabric – thereby the seams cease<br />

and pressure marks don’t develop.<br />

It’s only obvious that the economic side of<br />

hiking also moves into the limelight that<br />

way. The German market spans approx.. 13<br />

billion Euros. According to the study “Deutscher<br />

Wandermarkt 2014“ (German Hiking<br />

Market 2014) 69 per cent of Germans<br />

regularly leave for hiking trails. Thereby hiking<br />

uncatchably lies before cycling as the<br />

Germans’ most popular leisure activity. Not<br />
