Less is More
Although the McLaren brand is well-known in Formula 1, its road car models are
little known. “A real iniquity” is what everyone thinks after they have had the
opportunity of driving one.
Everyone wants to take a photo, to touch it once and of course
preferably to sit in it. But sorry, I did not allow anyone to be a
passenger on that day. There was just me and the car. And of
course the road.
A man asked: “What car brand is that?” A woman answered:
“Mine for today.” I then gave a friendly smile and left the men
on the pavement behind - just as surprised as uninformed about
the car brand. I simply floored the accelerator pedal, well at
least as much as possible on Swiss roads without adverse effects
like flashing police lights or subsequent consequences. It goes
without saying that I did not reach the maximum speed of 333
km/h but it roars and feels great even at lower speeds. Orgasm
was yesterday. Because having 650HP under your backside
makes a woman addicted; and because the McLaren 650S is a
cool thing, last but not least because it is a fairly unknown traffic
participant. Whereas a Ferrari, Lamborghini or even a Corvette
rarely causes a commotion, the high-performance sports car
from the British sports car manufacturer McLaren is a selfie king.
My friend was orange. McLaren’s corporate colour and certainly
a reason why people gazed after us. Just getting into the car told
me that the 650S is not a normal sports car. I needed some space
to make sure that the butterfly doors did not touch the car next to
me when I opened them. But once open, the interior welcomed
me with every comfort. The seat automatically slid back and the
cockpit itself is unobtrusive and only takes a few seconds to understand
it. Countless levers and buttons were dispensed with to
concentrate on the driving pleasure. It is all about driving and not
studying. The seven-gear gearbox works in automatic mode but
can also be switched to manual mode if desired.
I chose automatic mode that day but that did not reduce the driving
pleasure in any way. The 3.8 litre V8 engine ran reliably, the
Formula 1 technology worked perfectly and I was the hit at every
traffic light but that was nothing compared to the petrol station.
That was the first time that the petrol pump attendant offered me
a free-of-charge fill-up in return for a test drive. But as usual, I
simply smiled, paid and waved him a friendly goodbye. The only
exception was that I told him under which brand my HP-strong
friend could be found.
