KREUZVIERTEL
4
On the way from the city to the stadium or vice-versa, walkers probably pass through
one of the most fascinating and hip areas in the entire Ruhrgebiet area. Kreuzviertel is
known beyond Dortmund’s city limits for its busy nightlife and culture, and attractive
residential options in many old Wilhelminian buildings. The perceived Kreuzviertel is
somewhat larger than the city’s statistical definition of the area, which is restricted to
the core area around the Kreuzkirche. There are many bars and cafés, often with opulent
and very popular outdoor areas. It is among the areas in the region with the most pubs
per square metre. Dortmund’s nightlife includes stalls, kiosks or pump rooms, where a
mostly young crowd drinks bottled beer standing up – often with loud, good-humoured
banter. Everyone here is a coach, and everyone knows the best line-up. Lindemannstraße
is where fans ‘warm up’ and ‘cool down’ before and after the matches. Away
from the game, you can have a good long breakfast, do some urban shopping and
casual people-watching. There is only one thing that is almost impossible here: Parking.
