Documentary Film Festival Vienna
May 7 - 13, 2020, Votiv Kino and Kino De France
This year’s festival theme “Breathe” is devoted to poetic and
experimental approaches of sensory documentary filmmaking
and sets a focus on those dimensions of world events that are
difficult to approach solely by the means of language. With
the 2020 focus programme Ethnocineca wants to emphasize
the sensory experience of films - while watching them hold our
breath to find it again when we leave the cinema.
Whether personal destinies, political upheavals, moral or social
controversies, religious conflicts or the climate crisis, in these
turbulent times, faced with uncertainties and many open questions
for the future, Ethnocineca addresses the beauty and goodness
between the lines of cinematic narratives.
Austria’s film festival for ethnographic and documentary film is
looking for films of any length and approach that make accessible
the diversity, uniqueness as well as the commonalities of social and
cultural life worldwide, while narrating this view
critically and innovatively.
In addition to the general program, in which all
films run out of competition, there are five competition
sections, films may be submitted to.
Feature length documentaries may be handed
in for one of the following three jury awards: IDA - International
Documentary Award, ADA - Austrian Documentary Award and EVA
- Excellence in Visual Anthropology, and short films for the following
audience awards: ISA - International Shorts Award and ESSA - ethnocineca
Student Shorts Award.
Films must have been completed on or after Jan. 1, 2018. All films
will be shown in the original version with English subtitles. Thus only
entries with English subtitles will be taken into consideration for the
program selection.
Deadline for submissions: December 1, 2019.

Show & Tell: Sebastian Brameshuber
December 9 – 11, 2019, Anthology Film Archives, New York
Anthology Film Archives may be best known at large for its film
exhibition program, but its extensive archival collections represent
a crucially important part of its activities and mission.
Along with preservation screenings, theatrical premieres, thematic
series, and retrospectives, Anthology is equally dedicated
to presenting work by individuals operating at the vanguard of
non-commercial cinema. Each month Anthology showcases at
least one program, focusing on moving-image artists who are
emerging, at their peak, or long-established but still prolific.
These programs are collected under the rubric “Show & Tell”,
to emphasize the presence of the filmmakers at each and every
program.
The December installment of
“Show & Tell” represents a
comprehensive survey of the
films and videos of the Austrian
filmmaker Sebastian Brameshuber.
Born in Austria in 1981,
and a graduate of the University
of Applied Arts in Vienna and
Le Fresnoy – Studio national
des arts contemporains in France,
Brameshuber has moved
freely between short films and
features, and from frankly experimental
formal exercises to
documentary portraits of underrepresented
individuals and
cultures (muezzin competitions
in Turkey, adolescents in provincial
Austria, and Nigerian immigrants
in the Alps). This dichotomy is blurred, however, especially
since the documentaries unmistakably reflect his preoccupation with
probing the difficulties of representation in a world dominated by
images. Sociopolitical concerns and questions of form are closely intertwined
in Brameshuber’s work, whether he’s creating a structuralist
remake of the Lumière brothers’ „Workers Leaving the Factory“ (In,
Over & Out) or charting the transcontinental existence of a Nigerianborn
mechanic “Movements of a nearby Mountain / Bewegungen
eines nahen Bergs”, which is Brameshuber’s latest film.
In a remote, abandoned industrial site near a centuries-old ore mine
in the Austrian Alps, a self-taught mechanic runs a business exporting
used cars to his native Nigeria. As he pursues his lonely day-to-day

activities with wondrous serenity, past, present and future begin to
overlap, and memories of a lost friendship resurface against the backdrop
of a mysterious promise of everlasting resources.
Beyond the race for technological innovation, cartel-like collusion in
the auto parts industry, and the ominous interplay of marketing and
emission levels, at the base of the Erzberg mine in Styria (centralwestern
Austria), can be found a part of the automobile market that
is not yet so alienated. A Nigerian immigrant in Austria, Cliff buys old
cars in order to disassemble and separate their parts in a dilapidated
warehouse on the side of a federal highway in the woods before reconditioning
them for his former homeland. Carefully distanced and
focused, Movements of a Nearby Mountain describes what Cliff ‘s work
entails and what it produces in connection to bodies and objects.
More than merely documenting his skills, the film weaves together
the visible with the invisible and the myths and histories surrounding
and pervading the material world: the waterman, who brought people
iron for eternity, the promises and mechanisms of the market on
two continents of the earth as well as life between these worlds and
the end of the chain of exploitation — which is simultaneously its
beginning.
Sebastian Brameshuber’s “Movements of a Nearby Mountain” has recently
received among other awards the Grand Prix at the Cinéma du
Réel Festival in Paris and the best camera award (to Klemens Hufnagl)
at the Diagonale 2019 in Graz.
The Sebastian Brameshuber screenings are presented with support
