Was ist der besondere Reiz bei der Tanzfotografie?
Das habe ich im Katalogbuch so beschrieben: „Fotografie ist
Stillstand. Tanz ist Bewegung. Dynamik, Bewegung, Rhythmus
– Tanz, gebunden an Raum und Zeit, trifft auf ein Medium, das
in der Abbildung den Moment einfriert und als Bruchstück aus
dem Strom der Zeit herauslöst.“ Obwohl ich einen Moment
festhalte, kann ein Foto eine hohe Dynamik transportieren. In
den Ausstellungen höre ich dann von Menschen, wie sehr die
Fotos ihre Fantasie und Erinnerungen anregen.
Was hast du im Rückblick auf die vergangenen 17
Jahre TanzArt besonders in Erinnerung behalten?
Schwer zu sagen. Ich habe ein Faible für die Performances, für
das, was Irene K. aus Eupen mitbringt, oder das Brachland-Ensemble,
oder diese jazzige Performance im KiZ mit einem
Trompeter und einem Tänzer. Mittlerweile gefällt mir auch das
eine oder andere neoklassische Ballett.
Hast du Wünsche in Bezug auf die
nächsten Festivals?
Ich fände ein Festivalbüro als Anlaufstelle sehr schön. Oder
ein Café, in dem man sich immer treffen kann. Für die Gastkompanien
würde ich mir mehr Zeit wünschen. Das ist doch
sehr stressig, wenn die mittags ankommen und vor Mitternacht
schon wieder heimfahren müssen.
What is the special charm in dance photography?
In the catalogue I wrote this: “Photography is standstill. Dance
is movement. Dynamic, movement, rhythm – dance connected
to space and time meets a medium that freezes the moment
in a picture and detaches it from the current of time.”
Although I conserve a moment, a photo can transport a strong
dynamic. At the exhibitions the people then tell me how much
the pictures stimulate their imagination and their memories.
Looking back on the past 17 years, what
do you remember particularly?
Hard to say. I have a thing for the performances, for what Irene
K. brings from Eupen, or the Brachland Ensemble or this jazzy
KiZ performance with a trumpet player and a dancer. Meanwhile
I even like one or the other neoclassical ballet.
What do you wish for the next festivals?
I would very much like a festival office as a meeting point. Or
a café where you can always meet. For the guest companies I
would wish for more time. It’s very stressful when they arrive at
noon and have to return home before midnight.

Im Hintergrund

Den Beginn der Festivalvorbereitung kann man sich vorstellen
wie das Betreten eines großen leeren Raumes. Man weiß bereits,
dass dieser in einigen Monaten komplett, vermutlich bis
zur Decke, gefüllt sein wird. Zum größten Teil mit Dingen, die
man kennt und deren Größe man einschätzen kann – zumindest
ungefähr – doch auch mit Sachen, an die man im Vorfeld
nicht gedacht hat. Am Anfang sieht man nur den leeren Raum.
Also legt man Strukturen im Sinne von Bereichen und Regalen
an und beginnt mit dem Einräumen: der Kontaktaufnahme
zum TanzArt-Netzwerk, Beteiligten und Förderern, der Programmgestaltung,
der Kostenkalkulation, Akquise von Mitarbeiter:innen
und einiges mehr. Nach und nach füllt sich der
Raum, doch an manchen Tagen kommt so viel Neues dazu,
dass es fast unmöglich scheint, die Struktur beizubehalten
und den Überblick zu bewahren. Jetzt gilt es, sich auch immer
mal wieder genügend Zeit zu nehmen, um alles zu ordnen und
wer zudem gut Tetris spielen kann, bleibt Herr beziehungsweise
Herrin über das Chaos.
Der Inhalt des Raumes nimmt so immer mehr Form an, wird
konkreter und aktueller. Anreisen und Unterbringungen werden
gebucht, Technik, Proben und Fahrten organisiert und
und und…
Nicht alles davon kann und muss jedoch alleine bewerkstelligt
werden. Ist ein Regal zu hoch oder ein Gegenstand zu schwer,
kann man stets auf das gesamte Team zählen. Sei es die Leitung
der TCG oder die vielen freiwilligen Mitarbeiter:innen,
man hilft und unterstützt sich, um gemeinsam – bleiben wir
bei der Metapher – den Raum koordiniert, produktiv und vor
allem kreativ einzurichten.

You can imagine the beginning of the festival’s organization
like entering a big empty room. By then you already know, that
it’s going to be completely full, presumably up to the ceiling.
Mostly with things you know and the size of which you can
estimate – at least roughly –, but also with things you haven’t
thought of before. But at first you only see the empty room.
So you create structures like areas and shelves and start putting
things away: contacting the TanzArt network, participants
and sponsors, planning the program, calculating the costs, acquisition
of volunteers and a few more things. Little by little the
room is filling up. But on some days so many new things turn
up that is seems almost impossible to maintain a structure
and keep an overview. Now you need to take sufficient time to
put everything in order. And who is good at playing Tetris stays
on top of the chaos.
The room’s content takes on more and more shape, becomes
more concrete and up to date. Arrivals and accommodations
are being booked, technical equipment, rehearsals and transportation
being organized and so forth…
You don’t have to achieve all of this on your own. If a shelf is
too high or an object too heavy you can always count on the
whole team. Be it the direction of TCG or the many volunteers,
you help and support each other to furnish the room – let’s
stay with the metaphor – in a coordinated, productive and
above all in a creative way.
