In the relatively short breeding history of the German Democratic Republic from 1947 to
1990, the state studs and the Rostock Zoo made a significant contribution to the constant
existence of the breed and they initiated new impetus with imports from Poland. Around
250 Arabian horses were registered as breeding stock in the GDR Studbook during this period,
most of the horses had Polish roots.

Arabian breeding in the German Democratic
Republic (GDR) began after World War II with
the import of the mare Suse (Ahmet / Seerösle).
Born in Marbach in 1943, she came to
Dr. Kurt Lehrmann in Haldensleben. A year
later, the mare Daheim, born in 1941, came to
Magdeburg and into the ownership of Prof.
Dr. W Lembcke. Years later, Suse was stripped
of her status as a purebred Arabian because
of her sire Ahmet, who had Nigra-Zscheiplitz
in his pedigree. The exact lineage of Daheim
could not be determined. However, she had
a brand of the Romanian State Stud Radautz,
so she was classified as a Shagya-Arabian.
This mare family is still active today.
THE BEGINNINGS
Purebred Arabian breeding in the GDR began
with the import of the grey mare Roszka (Kohailan
Adjouz I / 236 Kuhailan Zaid). Born in
Babolna (Hungary) in 1945, she initially stood
at the Achental Stud with Gertraude Griesbach.
Through her daughter Rualla (by Kalif),
who was born in 1952, she founded an extensive
branch of the family in the west. Roszka
came to Dr. Kurt Lehrmann (1901 – 1959), a
practicing medical doctor in Haldensleben.
Lehrmann is considered one of the pioneers
of Arabian breeding in the GDR. Here she
had five more foals. Her partner always was
the purebred Arabian stallion Adonah (out
of Fasila). Born in Ujazd (Poland) in 1936,
this grey stallion descends from the famous
stallion Fetysz, who also established a line
in the Trakehner population. Adonah came
to Germany through the turmoil of war and
