BUSH VERLANGT KEINEN DEUTSCHEN EINSATZ
IM SÜDEN AFGHANISTANS
US-Präsident George W. Bush hat in einem Zeitungsinterview
klargestellt, dass er von Deutschland einen
Bundeswehreinsatz im umkämpften Süden Afghanistans
nicht fordert und auch nicht fordern wird. Er sei
dankbar, dass Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel und
der Deutsche Bundestag das US-Engagement mit
Truppen im Norden Afghanistans unterstütze, sagte
Bush wenige Tage vor dem NATO-Gipfel in Bukarest in
einem Gespräch mit der 'Welt'. Bush sprach sich
zudem dafür aus, Georgien und der Ukraine den Weg
in die NATO zu öffnen.
SPD BESTEHT WEITER AUF NEUEM
NPD-VERBOTSVERFAHREN
Die Sozialdemokraten bestehen trotz Bedenken von
CDU und CSU weiter auf einem neuen NPD-
Verbotsverfahren. Die Länderinnenminister der SPD
würden in Kürze eine Materialsammlung für ein solches
Verfahren vorlegen, sagte SPD-Generalsekretär
Hubertus Heil. Dabei handele es sich um offene
Quellen und nicht um solche, die auf Informationen
von V-Leuten des Verfassungsschutzes beruhten. Sie
belegten, dass die rechtsextreme NPD gegen die
Ordnung Deutschlands vorgehe. Bundesinnenminister
Wolfgang Schäuble und seine Unions- Länderkollegen
stehen einem neuen Verbotsverfahren skeptisch
gegenüber.
BUNDESREGIERUNG: BEHÖRDEN AN SCHULUNG
IN LIBYEN NICHT BETEILIGT
In der Affäre um die Ausbildung libyscher Sicherheitskräfte
durch deutsche Spezialisten hat die
Bundesregierung eine offizielle Beteiligung von
Bundesbehörden und -ministerien ausgeschlossen.
Nach heutiger Kenntnis habe sich mit Ausnahme
eines Hauptfeldwebels kein weiterer Soldat oder aktiver
Bundesbeamter an der Durchführung solcher
Maßnahmen beteiligt, erklärte Regierungssprecher
Ulrich Wilhelm. Gegen den vom Dienst suspendierten
Feldwebel läuft bereits ein Disziplinarverfahren.
Wilhelm bezeichnete die Schulung der libyschen
Sicherheitskräfte als private Aktion eines kommerziellen
Anbieters. Zur Rolle des Bundesnachrichtendienstes
BND wollte er sich nicht äußern.

BUSH NOT CALLING FOR GERMAN TROOPS
IN SOUTHERN AFGHANISTAN
US President George W. Bush has made it clear in a
newspaper interview that he is not calling for
Germany to send troops into the embattled south of
Afghanistan. He is grateful that German Chancellor
Angela Merkel and the German Bundestag supported
US deployment by sending German troops into
northern Afghanistan, said Bush a few days before
the NATO Summit in Bucharest in an interview with
the ‘Welt’. Bush also spoke in favor of admitting
Georgia and the Ukraine into NATO.
SPD STILL INSISTS ON A NEW NPD BAN
The Social Democrats continue to insist, despite
objections from the CDU and CSU, on pushing for a
new NPD ban. SPD state interior ministers will soon
come forth with material for a new proceeding, stated
SPD Secretary General Hubertus Heil. This material
comes from open sources and is not based on
information from people from the Federal Office for
the Protection of the Constitution. It will provide evidence
that the radical right-wing party NPD is proceeding
against the German system. German Interior
Minister Wolfgang Schäuble and his Union colleagues
are skeptical about pursuing a new ban.
GERMAN GOVERNMENT CLAIMS IT IS NOT
INVOLVED IN LIBYAN TRAININGS
In the affair over the training of Libyan security
forces by German specialists the German government
has ruled out official involvement by any
German agency and ministry. According to current
knowledge, no soldiers or active government official,
with the exception of master sergeant, were involved
in such measures, declared government spokesman
Ulrich Wilhelm. A disciplinary proceeding is being
pursued against the sergeant who has been suspended
from service. Wilhelm described the training
of Libyan security forces as a private action of a commercial
provider. He refused to comment on the role
of the German intelligence service BND.

DEUTSCHE HILFE FÜR IRAKISCHE FLÜCHTLINGE
Deutschland hat seine Hilfe für irakische Flüchtlinge
um 2,5 Millionen Euro erhöht. Das Geld gehe an die
Vereinten Nationen für vertriebene Iraker in Syrien
und Jordanien sowie im eigenen Land, hieß es vom
Auswärtigen Amt in Berlin. Insgesamt seien seit
Jahresbeginn rund 3,7 Millionen Euro zur Verfügung
gestellt worden. Die Zahl der irakischen Flüchtlinge im
In- und benachbarten Ausland wird seit Beginn des
Krieges auf fast fünf Millionen geschätzt.
WESTLB VERLIERT 1,6 MILLIARDEN –
DEUTSCHE BANK 2,5
Die internationale Finanzmarktkrise hat die Westdeutsche
Landesbank stärker getroffen als angenommen.
Der Düsseldorfer Konzern verbuchte 2007 durch die
Finanzmarktkrise und Fehlspekulationen rund 1,6 Milliarden
Euro Verlust. Die Bank hatte 2006 noch einen
Gewinn von 799 Millionen Euro ausgewiesen. Die
Deutsche Bank sieht sich durch die US- Finanzmarktkrise
stärker belastet als erwartet. Das größte deutsche
Bankhaus teilte mit, in den ersten drei Monaten
dieses Jahres rechne man mit rund 2,5 Milliarden Euro
Verlust.
ARBEITSLOSENZAHL IN DEUTSCHLAND SINKT
AUF 3,5 MILLIONEN
Die Arbeitslosigkeit in Deutschland ist auf den niedrigsten
März-Stand seit 15 Jahren gefallen. Im
Vergleich zum Vormonat ging die Zahl der Menschen
ohne Job um 110.000 auf gut 3,5 Millionen zurück. Das
teilte die Bundesagentur für Arbeit (BA) in Nürnberg
mit. Die Arbeitslosenquote sank um 0,2 Punkte auf 8,4
Prozent. Die BA besserte sogar die Prognose für 2008
nach und rechnet jetzt nur noch mit 3,43 Millionen
Arbeitslosen im Jahresschnitt.
BBC STUDIE – DEUTSCHLAND HAT DAS
BESTE IMAGE
Eine aktuelle BBC-Studie besagt, dass Deutschland
ein besseres Image außerhalb seiner Grenzen hat als
jedes andere große Land der Welt. Der Studie zufolge
ist das Bild von Deutschlands Einfluss vorwiegend
positiv. Im Durchschnitt hatten 56 Prozent der
Befragten eine positive Ansicht über Deutschland,
nur 18 Prozent hatten eine negative. Deutschland
bekam in seinen europäischen Partnerländern die
besten Wertungen: 82 Prozent Italiener, 74 Prozent
Franzosen und 62 Prozent der Briten hatten eine positive
Ansicht über Deutschland.
GERMAN AID FOR IRAQI REFUGEES
Germany has increased its aid for Iraqi refugees by
2.5 million euros. The money will go to the United
Nations for displaced Iraqis in Syria and Jordan as
well as in Iraq, stated the Foreign Office in Berlin.
Altogether since the beginning of the year approximately
3.7 billion euros have been allocated for this
purpose. The number of Iraqi refugees in Iraq and
neighboring countries has been estimated at nearly
five million since the beginning of the war.
WESTLB LOSES 1.6 BILLION –
DEUTSCHE BANK 2.5
The international financial market crisis has affected
the Westdeutsche Landesbank more heavily than
expected. In 2007 the Düsseldorf corporation entered
a 1.6 billion euro loss as a result of the financial market
crisis and bad speculations. In 2006, the bank still
declared a profit of 799 million euros. The Deutsche
Bank has also been more heavily hit by the US financial
market crisis than expected. The largest German
banking house reported that it expects a 2.5 billion
euro loss from the first three months of this year.
UNEMPLOYMENT IN GERMANY SINKS TO
3.5 MILLION
The unemployment rate in Germany has fallen to the
lowest March figures in 15 years. Compared to last
month the number of people without jobs dropped by
110,000 to 3.5 million, reported the Federal
Employment Office (BA) in Nuremberg. The unemployment
rate sank by 0.2 points to 8.4 percent. The
BA has even improved the outlook for 2008 and now
predicts an average of 3.43 million unemployed for
the year.
BBC STUDY – GERMANY HAS THE BEST IMAGE
A recent BBC study shows that Germany has a better
image abroad than any other large country in the
world. According to the study, the global image of
Germany’s influence is predominantly positive. On
average, 56 percent of those surveyed had a positive
view of Germany, compared to only 18 percent who
did not. Germany received the highest marks in its
European partners: 82 percent of Italians, 74 percent
of the French, and 62 percent of the British had a positive
view of Germany.

BUNDESREGIERUNG STOPPT BIOSPRIT-PLÄNE
Die deutsche Bundesregierung hat ihre Pläne zum
vermehrten Einsatz von Bio-Sprit gestoppt. Umweltminister
Sigmar Gabriel kündigte an, der Anteil in
Benzin und Diesel werde wegen technischer Unverträglichkeit
für mehr als drei Millionen Autos nicht
weiter erhöht. Gabriel räumte ein, dass Biokraftstoff
insgesamt häufig eine zweifelhafte Umweltbilanz aufweise.
Aktivisten kritisieren seit langem, dass für den
Anbau etwa von Palmöl häufig Regenwald gerodet
werde. Zudem verteuerten Energiepflanzen auch die
Nahrungsmittelproduktion.
EU MACHT WEG FÜR TELEFONATE IN
FLUGZEUGEN FREI
Die EU-Kommission hat den Weg für Handy-Telefonate
auf innereuropäischen Flügen freigemacht. Die
Kommission verabschiedete einheitliche Regeln für
die Einführung von Bordsystemen, die Telefongespräche
ohne Gefährdung der Sicherheit ermöglichen.
Handy- Telefonate an Bord sind derzeit noch
wegen der Befürchtung verboten, dass sie die
Funktionsfähigkeit der Bordinstrumente beeinträchtigen
könnten. Einige Fluggesellschaften wie die
Lufthansa und Air Berlin wollen Mobiltelefonate aber
auch künftig nicht zulassen. Dagegen hat die Air
France bereits einen Modellversuch an Bord einer
Maschine gestartet.
DFB ZIEHT SCHLUSSSTRICH UNTER
WETTSKANDAL
Nach gut drei Jahren kann der Deutsche Fußball-
Bund einen Schlussstrich unter den Wett- und Manipulationsskandal
um den ehemaligen Schiedsrichter
Robert Hoyzer ziehen. Der DFB legte den Rechtsstreit
außergerichtlich mit der Einigung auf einen Schadensersatz
in Höhe von 750.000 Euro bei. Tatsächlich
zahlen muss der zurzeit in Haft sitzende Hoyzer allerdings
nur 126.000 Euro innerhalb von 15 Jahren.

GERMAN GOVERNMENT STOPS BIOFUEL PLANS
The German government has stopped its plans to
increase use of biofuel. Environment minister Sigmar
Gabriel announced that the percentage of gas and
diesel would not be increased beyond more than
three million cars due to technical incompatibility.
Gabriel acknowledged that biofuel frequently shows
a dubious environmental balance. Activists have
long criticized that rain forests are often cut down for
the cultivation of plants to produce palm oil.
Moreover, energy plants increase the price of producing
food.
EU CLEARS THE RUNWAY FOR PHONING
IN AIRPLANES
The EU Commission has cleared the runway for cell
phone calls on European flights. The Commission
passed standardized regulations for introducing
onboard systems that will enable phone conversations
without endangering security. Cell phone use is
still forbidden onboard for fear they could impair the
functionality of onboard instruments. A few airlines
such as Lufthansa and Air Berlin do not intend to permit
cell phone use on board. Other airlines such as
Air France have already launched a pilot project on
board one plane.
DFB PUTS BETTING SCANDAL BEHIND IT
After three years the German Soccer League can put
the betting and manipulation scandal surrounding
former referee Robert Hoyzer behind it. The DFB settled
the lawsuit out of court with an agreement on
compensation to the amount of 750,000 euros. In reality,
Hoyzer, now behind bars, must only pay 126,000
euros within 15 years.

BEIM HEURIGEN IM SCHATTEN DER
SKYSCRAPER
Fußgängerzonen sind im Autoland USA
ein Fremdwort. Sie existieren praktisch
nicht. Der Gedanke, ein urbanes
Straßenpflaster könnte für PKWs, SUVs
und LKWs versperrt bleiben und der
puren Nutzung nicht motorisierter
Stadtbewohner zugeführt werden,
sprengt die Vorstellungskraft der US-
Metropolenplaner. Nicht einmal die schicke
Strandpromenade in Miamis South
Beach mit ihren Straßencafes und coolen
Art-Deco-Hotels wurde den tausenden
von Schlenderern zugänglich gemacht.
New York, Amerikas Metropole Nummer
eins in Sachen Outdoor-Cafées,
zögert ebenfalls, seine Straßen für jene zu
öffnen, denen sie eigentlich gehören: Den
Passanten. Und das ist in NY immerhin
eine satte Mehrheit: Kaum jemand hier
hat selbst ein Auto. Abgesehen natürlich
von ausreichend Betuchten, die 600 Dollar
oder mehr im Monat für die Heimgarage
hinblättern können und sich beim
jeweiligen Ziel auch die satten 25 Dollar
pro Stunde Parkgebühr leisten möchten.
Der Mangel an Fußgängerzonen wird
durch den Erfolg der praktisch einzig
existenten autofreien Zone in Manhattan
eindrucksvoll illustriert: Der “Stone
Street”im Financial District am Südzipfel
Manhattans. Die Pflasterstraße mit ihren
alten zweistöckigen Häusern aus vergangenen
Jahrhunderten war wohl bei der
Atomisierung des ältesten Stadtteils des
BigApple in den 70iger Jahren übersehen
worden: Damals waren die idyllischen
Gassen, wo die Holländer einst die ersten
Kopfsteinpflaster der Welt legten und
New Yorks Epizentrum für den Großteil
seiner Stadtgeschichte lag, plattgewalzt
worden. Darauf entstanden hässliche
Betontürme. Nun ist die revitalisierte
Stone Street eine attraktive Oase, in dem
sich durch die Transformation von Büroin
Apartmenttürme der Bezirk rund um
die Wall Street auch nach Börsenschluss
mit Leben füllt. Wir testeten die Restaurantmeile
am ersten April-Wochenende.
Die Holzbänke standen bereit. Wie ein
Heuriger im Schatten der 300 Meter
hohen Skyscraper. Für 45 Minuten gab
die Skyline auch noch die Sonnenstrahlen
frei. Die „Heurigenmeile” füllte sich in
Minuten und die vom Endloswinter völlig
käsebleiche New Yorker rissen sich die
Winterjacken vom Leib.
Die Idylle öffnet jedenfalls die Augen,
dass selbst die pulsierende Weltmetropole
längst überreif ist, die erstickenden Verkehrslawinen
zurückzudrängen – und
den urbanen Raum endlich seinen Bewohnern
zu öffnen. „Taking Back the
Streets” betitelte prompt die New York
Times in ihrer Sonntagausgabe ein
Feature, wo die Erschließung des 9,34
Kilometer langen Straßennetzes für seine
Bewohner mit zehn Ideen andiskutiert
wird – alles von der Spiel- und Lebensstraße,
Radler-Boulevards, Grüne Raster,
sanfte Verstopfung bis „Urbane Akupunktur”
wurden angeregt. Nette
Visionen.
In die Realität wurden träumende New
Yorker bereits am Montag zurückgeholt:
Da steckte Bürgermeister Bloombergs
ambitionierter Plan, acht Dollar „Eintritt“
für jedes Auto nach Manhattan zu
erheben (à la London), wieder in der
byzantinischen New York-Kapitale
Albany fest. Und wurde prompt beerdigt.

In June the European Soccer Championship
will be drawing soccer fans to the Alps.
Die Faszination Fußball geht weiter. Nach der
Weltmeisterschaft in Deutschland 2006, lockt jetzt die
"UEFA-Euro 2008" vom 7.- 29. Juni die Fans in Richtung der
majestätischen Alpen nach Österreich und in die Schweiz. Sechs
Millionen Gäste aus 120 Nationen haben sich für die 31 Spiele
angemeldet. Wer jetzt noch kein Ticket besitzt, hat im wahrsten
Sinne des Wortes schlechte Karten.
16 europäische Mannschaften kämpfen um den „Coup Henri
Delounay". EM-Organisationschef Martin Kallen (Schweiz) kann
nur auf die zahlreichen Videowände und TV-Übertragungen verweisen:
„Wir erwarten für alle Spiele zusammen rund acht
Milliarden TV-Zuschauer." Wer ein Souvenir der Euro 2008 erstehen
will, ist allerdings nicht auf einen Stadionbesuch angewiesen.
Insgesamt werden in 1 250 Shops in Österreich und der Schweiz
Lizenz-Souvenirs anbieten.
Die Griechen mit dem deutschen Trainer Otto Rehhagel haben
sich fest vorgenommen, den 2004 in Portugal gewonnen Pokal zu
verteidigen. Gespielt wird in acht relativ kleinen, aber wunderschönen
Stadien. Nach der Eröffnung im österreichischen
Klagenfurt, wird in Innsbruck, Salzburg und Wien sowie in den
Schweizer Stadien von Zürich, Genf, Basel und Bern gespielt. Die

52 000 Zuschauern Platz. Es ist das größte aller EM-Stadien. Am
29. Juni wird dort das Finale ausgetragen. Die 16 Team spielen
zunächst in vier Vorrundengruppen, danach geht es im K.O.-
System über Viertel- und Halbfinale bis zum Endspiel.

The fascination with soccer continues. After the World Cup 2006 in
Germany soccer fans will be heading to Austria and Switzerland
for the UEFA-Euro 2008 in the majestic Alps. Six million guests from
120 nations have registered for the 31 games. Those who still have
no tickets literally have poor cards. Sixteen European teams will
be battling for the “Coup Henri Delounay”. European Soccer
Championship director Martin Kallen (Switzerland) can only point
to the numerous video walls and TV broadcasts: “We are expecting
around eight billion TV viewers for all the games.” Whoever
wishes to collect a souvenir for the Euro 2008 need not visit a stadium.
Altogether 1250 shops in Austria and Switzerland will be
selling licensed souvenirs.
The Greeks with German trainer Otto Rehhagel have firmly committed
themselves to defending the trophy won in Portugal in 2004.
The games in Switzerland will be played in eight relatively small
but beautiful stadiums in Zurich, Geneva, Basel and Bern. In
Austria games will be held in Innsbruck, Salzburg, Klagenfurt and
Vienna. The Austrian capital can seat 52,000 spectators in the
Ernst-Happel Stadium. It is the largest of all European Soccer
Championship stadiums. The final match will be held here on June
29. The 16 teams will first play in four preliminary round groups,
then the tournament will go into the KO system through the quarterfinals,
semifinals to the final match.

Im folgenden stellen wir Ihnen die wichtigsten Mitglieder der drei
deutschsprachigen Teams vor:
Der Trainer
Joachim „Jogi" Löw führt die Nationalmannschaft seit
zwei Jahren. Er setzt auf Gute-Laune-Fußball, betreibt
aber selbst Test-Länderspiele mit aller Akribie. Sein
Vertrauen in jungen Spieler hat sich bis jetzt bewährt.
Bereits in der Vorbereitung berief er einen Kreis von 35
Kandidaten. Damit wusste jeder, wer eine Chance hat.
Der Kapitän
Michael Ballack bangte lange um die EM. Beim englischen
Spitzenklub FC Chelsea London musste er wegen
einer Verletzung sieben Monate pausieren. Inzwischen
spielte er wieder und schießt als Mittelfeldspieler wieder
Tore für Chelsea und für Deutschland. Mit seinem
Team will der gebürtige Sachse zum vierten Mal den
EM-Pott holen.
Der Torjäger
Mirsolav Klose, im polnischen Danzig geborene, kam
mit acht Jahren nach Deutschland und erlernte in
Blaubach-Diedelkopf das Fußball-ABC., ehe er zum 1.
FC Kaiserslautern stieß.. Inzwischen spielt der gefährliche
Torjäger für Bayern.. In bisher 72 Länderspielen traf
er 36 mal. Bei der WM 2006 war er mit fünf Treffern
erfolgreichster Torschütze.
Der Trainer
Josef Hickersberger bestritt in der deutschen
Bundesliga 177 Spiele. Er kennt den deutschen Fußball
also bestens. Für ihn ist die EM im eigenen Land eine
„unglaubliche Herausforderung." Der Trainer hofft auf
Cordoba. Bei der WM 1978 in Argentinien gewann
Österreich gegen Deutschland 3:2.

Swiss soccer team who will be decisive for the outcome of the

Coach
Joachim "Jogi" Löw has been training the national team
for two years. He emphasizes “feel good” soccer, but
meticulously practices with test international games.
His trust in young players has paid off so far. Already
prepared, he has summoned a circle of 35 candidates.
So everyone knows who has a chance…
Captain
Michael Ballack has long been worried about the
European Championship games. At the English prestigious
soccer club FC Chelsea London he had to sit on
the bench for seven months due to an injury. Now he is
back on the field and shooting goals for Chelsea and for
Germany as a midfielder. With his team the native Saxon
intends to win the European Soccer Championship trophy
for the fourth time.
Forward
Mirsolav Klose, born in Polish Danzig, came to Germany
at age eight and learned the basics of soccer in
Blaubach-Diedelkopf before he advanced to 1. FC
Kaiserslautern. Now the dangerous forward plays for
Bayern. In 72 international games he has shot 36 goals.
At the World Cup 2006 he was the most successful forward
with 5 goals.
Coach
Josef Hickersberger played 177 games in the German
Soccer League. So he knows German soccer very well.
For him the European Soccer Championship in his own
country is an “unbelievable challenge.” The trainer
from Ösi is hoping for another Cordoba. At the World
Cup held in Argentina in 1978 Austria won against
Germany 3:2.

Der Kapitän
Andreas Ivanschitz von Panathinaikos Athen stieg
bereits mit 20 Jahren zum jüngsten Kapitän der Österreicher
auf. Der Mittelfeldspieler aus Wien ist nicht nur
ein begabter Fußballer . Er ist auch Künstler. Er spielt
Klavier und wurde am Haydn-Konservatorium an der
Oboe ausgebildet. Mit 14 Jahren begann er bei Rapid
Wien als Fußballer.
Der Torjäger
Sanel Kljic soll für Österreich bei der EM Tore schießen.
Der 30-Jährige von Austria Wien zählt zu den sichersten
Torschützen in Österreichs Liga. Kuljic zählt als
Spätzünder. Schon mit 17 spielte er bei Austria
Salzburg, verschwand aber dann in unteren
Spielklasse. Erst 2005 kehrte er in den Profifußball
zurück und gehört zu den EM-Hoffnungen.
Der Trainer
Jakob „Köbin" Kuhn will als Schweizer Nationaltrainer
noch einmal zum großen Schlag ausholen. Nach der
EM geht der einstige Kicker des FC Zürich (386 Spiele) in
den Ruhestand und wird vom Bayern-Trainer Ottmar
Hitzfeld abgelöst. In der Schweiz spricht es niemand
aus, aber die Eidgenossen werden von ihren Fans im
Halbfinale erwartet.
Der Kapitän
Alexander Frei aus Basel spielt für Borussia Dortmund
in der Bundesliga. Mit zwei Operationen hatte er in dieser
Saison viel Pech. Bei der EM kann er aber wieder
über den Rasen wirbeln. Als Kapitän will er diesmal
Vorbild sein. 2004 wurde er wegen einer Spuckattacke
im Englandspiel für drei Matches gesperrt.
Der Torjäger
Alexander Frei vereint in seiner Person Kapitän und Torjäger. In
seiner ersten Bundesliga-Saison 2006/007 schoss er für Dortmund
16 Tore. 2005 war er mit 20 Treffern in Frankreichs Staatsliga sogar
Torschützenkönig. Frei fühlt sich wieder voll fit und will vor eigenem
Publikum gegen Tschechien, Portugal und die Türkei Tore
schießen.

Captain

ever for the Austrians. The midfielder from Vienna is
not only a talented soccer player. He is also an artist. He
plays the piano and studied oboe at the Haydn
Conservatory. At the age of 14 he began playing soccer
for Rapid Wien.
Forward
Sanel Kuljic will be shooting goals for Austria at the
European Championship. The 30-year-old Austrian from
Vienna is one of the most confident forwards in the
Austrian league. Kuljic is regarded as a late bloomer. At
age 17 he played for Austria Salzburg, but then disappeared
into the lower leagues. In 2005, however, he
returned to professional soccer and is one of the top
players in this year’s European Soccer Championship.
Coach
As coach of the Swiss national team, Jakob "Köbin"
Kuhn wants to land a big punch. After the European
Soccer Championship the former kicker for FC Zürich
(386 games) will retire and be replaced by Bayern trainer
Ottmar Hitzfeld. In Switzerland nobody is talking
about it, but fans expect the Swiss to land in the semifinals.
Captain

first German Soccer League season 2006-07 he shot 16 goals for
Dortmund. In 2005 he was even the goal shooting king in France’s
national soccer league with 20 goals. Frei feels he is back in shape
and is looking forward to shooting goals against the Czech
Republic, Portugal and Turkey in front of an audience of fellow
countrymen.

zum vierten Mal jubeln?
Ein kurzer Rückblick auf die Geschichte
der Fußball-Europameisterschaft
Deutschland spielte das erste mal als
Vizeweltmeister bei der Europameisterschaft
1968 mit. Es begann mit einem Desaster.
Deutschland musste in der Qualifikation im
Dezember 1967 gegen Albanien ran. In Tirana
sprang nur ein 0:0 heraus. Deutschland qualifizierte
sich nicht für die Endrunde. Erst 1972 war es dann
soweit. Die Germans schafften es sogar ins Endspiel.
Gerd Müller, Franz Beckenbauer und Günter Netzer zauberten.
3:0-Sieg über die Sowjetunion im Brüssler Heyselstadion.
Deutschland ist zum ersten Mal Europameister. Vier Jahre später
in Belgrad hatte es der heutige Bayern-Manager Ulli Hoeness auf
dem Fuß, den zweiten EM-Titel einzufahren. Doch der Bayer donnerte
beim entscheidenden Elfmeterschießen daneben.
Die Europameisterschafts-Endrunde 1980 in Italien wurde zum
ersten Mal mit acht Mannschaften ausgetragen. Der „blonde
Engel" Bernd Schuster zauberte im Mittelfeld und das Kopfball-
Ungeheuer Bernd Hrubesch aus Hamburg sorgte für die Tore.
Deutschland gewann 2:0 gegen Belgien. Beide Treffer erzielte
Hrubesch.
Auf den dritten deutschen Sieg bei einer Europameisterschaft
mussten die Fans bis 1996 warten. In England, dem Mutterland des
Fußballs, kämpfte sich die Klinsmann-Elf mit Einsatz und Willen
gegen Tschechien ins Finale. Die Tschechen führten mit 1:0.
Bundestrainer Berti Vogts brachte deshalb in der 69. Minute
Oliver Bierhoff, den heutigen Team-Manager der Deutschen. Nur
vier Minuten nach seiner Einwechslung köpfte der Italien-
Legionär in der 73. Minute zum 1:1. Verlängerung! Wie beim
Eishockey zählte 1996 auch bei der Fußball-EM zum ersten Mal
das „Golden Goal". Wer in der Verlängerung zuerst ein Tor erzielt,
hat gewonnen. Bierhoff traf in der 95. Minute. Der Rest war Jubel.
Seither wartet die deutsche Fußball-Gemeinde wieder auf einen
Erfolg. 2000 und 2004 mussten die deutschen Kicker bereits nach
der Vorrunde die Sachen packen. 2008 soll das nach dem Wunsch
der deutschen Fußballfans nicht wieder passieren.

Triumph for the Fourth Time?
A short retrospective of the
European Soccer Championship
Germany played for the first time in the European
Soccer Championship in 1968 as second-place
world champions. It began with a disaster.
Germany played against Albania in December
1967 in the qualifying rounds. The end result in
Tirana was a mere 0:0. Germany did not qualify for
the final round. In 1972 they finally made it. The
Germans even made it to the finals. Gerd Müller, Franz
Beckenbauer and Günter Netzer conjured up soccer magic
for a 3:0 victory over the Soviet Union in Heysel Stadium in
Brussels. For the first time Germany became European soccer
champions. Four years later in Belgrad today’s Bayern manager
Ulli Hoeness had the ball right on his foot to kick in the second
European Soccer Championship title. But the Bavarian missed the
decisive eleven-meter shot.
The European Championship finals round was held in Italy in
1980 for the first time with eight teams. The “blonde angel” Bernd
Schuster performed magic in midfield and headball phenomenon
Bernd Hrubesch from Hamburg shot the goals. Germany won 2:0
against Belgium. Both goals were made by Hrubesch.
Fans had to wait until 1996 for the third German victory at a
European Soccer Championship. In England, home of soccer,
Klinsmann’s eleven battled the Czech Republic to get into the final.
The Czech team led 1:0. German coach Berti Vogt brought in Oliver
Bierhoff, today team manager of the German national team, at the
69th minute. Only four minutes after entering the game the Italian
legionnaire knocked in the ball with his head at the 73th minute for
a 1:1 overtime! As with ice hockey, German fans also experienced
a “golden goal” at the European Soccer Championship final in
1996. The first team to knock in a goal in overtime wins. Bierhoff
drives in a goal in the 95th minute. The rest was jubilation. Since
then the German soccer community has been waiting for another
victory. In 2000 and 2004 the German soccer team had to pack their
bags after the preliminary rounds. If German soccer fans have
their way, it will not happen again in 2008.

Der US Sportsender ESPN hat nach dem großen Quotenerfolg der
WM in Deutschland vor zwei Jahren entschieden, alle Spiele der EM
2008 auf den Sendern ESPN, ESPN2 und ABC (ab Halbfinale) in voller
Länge zu übertragen. Beinahe alle Spiele werden live ausgestrahlt,
ein paar wenige werden aufgezeichnet und den Zuschauern mit einer
geringen Zeitverzögerung angeboten. ESPN und ESPN2 sind in fast
allen US Großstädten im „basic cable” oder „basic satellite”-Paket
enthalten, kosten also keine extra Gebühren. ABC ist überall in den
USA völlig frei empfangbar, sogar ohne Kabel und zur Not mit der
guten alten Zimmerantenne.
Natürlich zeigt auch der fast überall in den USA im „basic cable” und
„basic satellite” Paket empfangbare spanischsprachige Sender
Telemundo alle Spiele, die meisten ebenfalls live.
Selbstverständlich kann man die Spiele auch in einschlägigen
Kneipen und Bars verfolgen und dabei Parties feiern, viele Kneipiers
wollen speziell für die EM zusätzliche Bildschirme aufstellen. Fans der
deutschen, österreichischen und schweizer Nationalmannschaft
kommen besonders in New York auf ihre Kosten:
Sowohl die urbayerische Kneipe„Zum Schneider” (229 East 7th
Street, Ecke Avenue C, 212-598-1098) als auch die Bar „Loreley” (7
Rivington Street, 212-253-7077) haben zahlreiche Bildschirme, extra
Tische und Stühle bestellt. Bei Spielen der deutschen Mannschaft
sind beide allerdings traditionell überfüllt, viele Fans müssen von der
Straße aus zusehen.
Vorsicht: Da es rings um die beiden Kneipen wiederholt zu
Ausschreitungen nach Spielen der deutschen Mannschaft kam, will
die New Yorker Polizei gegen allzu siegesfreudige Fans rigoros vorgehen.
Bei der WM 2006 wurden zum Beispiel weibliche deutsche Fans
verhaftet, die nach Siegen ihrer Manschaft barbusig und betrunken
auf Autodächern tanzten – was auf der Berliner Fanmeile augenzwinkernd
gedulded wird, geht natürlich in den USA überhaupt nicht.
In Los Angeles sind besonders die schweizer Fans im Waterfront Café
willkommen (205 Ocean Front Walk; Telefon 310-392-0322). Viele
deutsche Fans treffen sich außerdem traditionell in der schottischen
Kneipe “Cock’n’Bull” (2947 Lincoln Boulevard, Santa Monica, Telefon
310-399-9696), wo auf zahlreichen Großbildschirmen regelmäßig alle
wichtigen Fußballereignisse übertragen werden.
In Los Angeles stellt das Goethe-Institut außerdem wieder sein sehr
schönes, großes Multi-Media Zentrum für„Viewing-Parties” zur
Verfügung. Ähnliches planen auch die Goethe Institute in Atlanta,
Boston, Chicago, New York, San Francisco und Washington. Nähere

haben sich im Goethe Institut L.A. neben den deutschen

An article on page 40 and 41 lists what you refer to as the
universities with the "worst rankings" in U.S. News & World
Report's Best Colleges 2008.
Unfortunately, the author has it wrong. Clarkson University
is in the "top tier" of U.S. News' Best National Universities.
There are more than 120 national universities below
Clarkson (worse rankings) on the list. I have attached the
full list, which we received from U.S. News in August, for
you to review.Your author may have only looked at the top
of the list, without realizing it was incomplete.
So you see, we are actually at the top of the list - along with
the other nine universities you listed as the worst - and very
proud of this accomplishment.
I would appreciate it if you could print a correction in the
next issue of German World.

Arbeitsalltag, aber deutsche Manager sehen das
anders
Die Weltkonzerne von heute tätigen
Geschäfte auf allen Kontinenten.
Ihre Führungskräfte senden sie
montags zu Verhandlungen nach Taipeh,
mittwochs nach Chicago und freitags nach
Düsseldorf. Aber wie gut sind diese Mitarbeiter
im Hinblick auf die unterschiedliche
Geschäftskultur wirklich vorbereitet, um
erfolgreich im Ausland zu agieren?
Auch in einer globalisierten Welt ist es
für deutsche Geschäftsleute nicht immer
leicht, in Amerika tätig zu sein. “Es gibt

einen Witz bei uns, “ erklärt Dr. Eugene A.
Sekulow, ehemaliger Vorsitzender der
Deutsch-Amerikanischen Handelskammer
in New York, “wenn wir deutschen
Geschäftsbesuch erwarten: “Es kommt
heute jemand aus Frankfurt, wir stellen uns
besser auf ein langes Meeting ein …”
Der häufigste Fehler, der von deutschen
Industriebossen gemacht werde, so
Sekulow weiter, sei, dass ihre Reden zu
lang und zu langweilig sind. Deutsche
Unternehmer reden durchschnittlich 20 –
50 % länger als ihre amerikanischen
Kollegen und verlieren so das Interesse der
Zuhörer. Damit verpassen sie häufig die
Gelegenheit, vor einer wichtigen Zuhörerschaft
einen positiven Eindruck zu machen.
Leider meinen die Deutschen zu oft
bereits zu wissen, wie man sich in der amerikanischen
Geschäftswelt verhalten sollte,
da sich die Kuluren so ähnlich sind. Die
Unterschiede sind sehr subtil und nur
schwer erkennbar, denn die Amerikaner
ziehen sich eher zurück, als dass sie jemanden
auf seine Fehler aufmerksam machen.
Ein deutscher Vertriebsmanager, zum
Beispiel, der nach einer Produktvorführung
von einem Amerikaner hört “Das ist ja ganz
fantastisch, die beste Technologie, die ich
je gesehen habe”, denkt, dass er einen
neuen Kunden gewonnen hat. Der
Amerikaner jedoch wollte nur sehr höflich
sein.
Im Marketing und in der Unternehmenskommunikation
braucht man immer jemanden,
der tief in der Kultur des Zielmarktes
verwurzelt ist. Genauer gesagt, braucht
man im deutsch-amerikanischen Geschäftsalltag
immer beides: einen
Deutschen, der vermittelt, was über das

Produkt kommuniziert werden sollte und
einen Amerikaner, der entscheidet, wie die
Information am besten für den Zielmarkt
formuliert werden sollte.
Ein gutes Beispiel für die Unterschiede
der beiden Geschäftskulturen ist zum
Beispiel der jeweilige Marketingansatz auf
Messen. In Deutschland sind die vorgestellten
Produkte, z.B. Maschinen, alle gut
einsehbar und man kann die deutsche
Technologie bewundern. Auf amerikanischen
Handelsmessen werden die
Maschinen in Aktion vorgeführt, damit man
sieht, wie sie arbeiten, wieviel sie pro
Stunde produzieren und was die Produktion
kostet.
Deutsche Unternehmer sind eher an
Technologie und Qualität interessiert, die
Amerikaner an den Kosten und dem Wert.
Ein hervorragendes Beispiel missglückter
Kommunikation ist folgende Begebenheit:
Eine Führungskraft eines groβen
deutschen Autoherstellers wollte eines der
Vorstandsmitglieder in Detroit in einer Rede
besonders ehren und nannte ihn “the rock
bottom” (das Allerletzte) im Bereich der
Automobilherstellung. Er meinte natürlich
“the bedrock” (Stützpfeiler). Hätte er seine
Rede einem einheimischen
Medienrepräsentanten gezeigt, wäre ihm
und dem Vorstandsmitglied eine groβe
Peinlichkeit erspart geblieben.
Viele Deutsche sind Ratschlägen
gegenüber eher unempfänglich – sie
wollen nur hören, was sie ohnehin schon
wissen. So kann auch das scheinbar harmlose
Geplauder an der Trinkfontaine, die es
in jedem amerikanischen Büro gibt, zu
einem wahren Minenfeld werden. Es
gehört in der amerikanischen Arbeitswelt
einfach dazu, das letzte Baseball Spiel, die
“Apprentice”-Episode vom Vorabend oder
das Wetter zu diskutieren. Deutsche bewerten
diese zwanglosen Bürogespräche als
Zeitverschwendung. Für den Amerikaner
ist dieser Büro Small Talk jedoch ein
wichtiger Bestandteil seines
Arbeitsalltages. Die Mitarbeiter sollen sich
bei der Arbeit wohl fühlen und Spaβ haben.
Wenn sie sich wohl fühlen, sind sie
motiviert und produzieren bessere
Ergebnisse.

Business and Culture Clash:
Mentality Trap –
What German Managers Do Wrong in the US
Water-cooler talk is part of everyday business in the US
but German managers don’t have a feel for it.
Today’s “global players” do business on all continents. Their
managers negotiate Monday in Taipei, Wednesday in
Chicago, and Friday in Düsseldorf. But how well do different
cultural backgrounds mix in the work environment and how prepared
are executives to successfully maneuver in foreign conference
rooms?
Even in the age of globalization it is not always smooth sailing
for Germans doing business in the US. “We have a joke – ‘here
comes somebody from Frankfurt. It’s going to be long. We better
settle in,’” explains Dr. Eugene A. Sekulow, former chairman of the
German American Chamber of Commerce in New York.
Sekulow points out the most common offense German executives
still commit in the US – are long and often boring speeches.
Germans talk on average 20 to 50 percent longer than Americans
and lose people in the process.
There are still many CEOs from major German companies who
fall into the speech trap and miss a great opportunity to make a
positive impression in front of an important audience. It is easy for
Germans coming to the US to have a false sense of security
because the cultures seem so similar. The underlying differences
are often hard to detect since Americans usually withdraw rather
than make other people aware of their mistakes. For example the
German sales manager after handing his promotional material to
his American client who, in return, raves, ‘this is fabulous, the best
technology I have ever seen.’ While the German now thinks he has
made a sale, the American was just very polite.
In marketing and communications, you need a person who is
deeply rooted in the local culture. You need both, the Germans
who bring over the idea of what needs to be said and the
Americans to determine how the message should be communicated
and translated for the local market.
A good example of different marketing approaches are trade
shows. “In Germany, the machines on display are all open and you
can see inside and marvel at German technology. At American
trade shows, the machines are running and you can see how they
work and how much they produce per hour and what it costs.
Germans are much more interested in technology and quality,
Americans in price and value.
An executive from a major German car company intended to
honor one of the board members in Detroit by calling him ‘the rock
bottom of German automotive engineering.’ Of course he meant
bedrock and if he had shown the speech to his local media repre-
sentative, he would have saved himself and the honoree the
embarrassment.
A lot of Germans are resistant to advice – they only want to hear
what they know anyway. Another seemingly harmless aspect that
can turn into a minefield is water-cooler talk. While it is customary
in American companies to discuss the latest baseball game, last
night’s episode of The Apprentice and the weather, Germans tend
to dismiss such office chitchat as a waste of time. Office small talk
is an integral part of American business culture. People are supposed
to feel good at work. If they feel good, they are motivated
and get better results.

Madhu Mehta with the Award of Excellence 2008. Born in
Saharanpur, India, Madhu Mehta received her degree in Textile
Design Interior Decoration from the “Meisterschule für Mode”
(Master School for Fashion) in Hamburg, Germany. In 1976, she
joined her father's business "India Silk", an import business of
hand-woven silk textiles. While living in Baden-Baden, she established
the "German-Indian Society", a cultural organization, and in
2004 she started the India-US Chamber of Commerce Inc. of South
Florida. Lufthansa supported the event by donating two roundtrip
business class tickets to Europe for the live auction held at the
event.

General Secretary to the United Nations Kofi Annan will be
giving the honorific speech, and Dr. Thomas Enders, CEO of

been a major force behind establishing an effective network of
German language schools. Multilingualism opens new horizons

Goethe and Schiller we strengthen traditional ties between

Der 26. Juni vor 60 Jahren:
Gedenken an die Berliner Luftbrücke
Dieses Jahr feiern wir am 26. Juni den
60.Jahrestag der legendären Berliner
Luftbrücke, jenes historische Ereignis,
das die West Berliner vor dem Verhungern
und West Berlin vor der Annektierung
durch die Sowjets rettete, und das
eine der wichtigsten Säulen der deutschamerikanischen
Freundschaft darstellt.
Noch heute erinnern sich viele ältere
Berliner bewegt an den 26. Juni 1948, als
die ersten „Rosinenbomber” auf dem
Flughafen Tempelhof im Süden von West-
Berlin landeten..
Die allierten Flieger brachten die verschiedensten
Versorgungsgüter nach
West-Berlin, darunter Nahrungsmittel, Medikamente,
Kleidung, Ersatzteile, Werkzeug,
Brennstoffe und vieles mehr. Bis zum
12. Mai 1949 landeten und starteten die
Flugzeuge teilweise im 90-Sekunden Takt.
Auslöser der Berlin-Blockade war die
sowjetische Wut über die von den West-
Allierten im Alleingang durchgezogene
Währungsreform in den drei Westzonen.
Über Nacht wurde die D-Mark eingeführt,
die ab sofort auch in West-Berlin als Zahlungsmittel
galt. Die Sowjets fühlten sich
über den Tisch gezogen und riegelten West-
Berlin ab. Doch General Clay, Militärgouverneur
der amerikanischen Besatzungszone,
ließ sich nicht in die Knie zwingen und befahl
in der Nacht auf den 25. Juni 1948 nach
Absprache mit dem britischen Luftwaffenkommodore
Rex Waite die Generalversorgung
West-Berlins aus der Luft, „koste
es, was es wolle” (“No matter the costs”.)
2,2 Millionen Menschen in West-Berlin
waren fortan knapp ein Jahr lang von der
Versorgung aus der Luft abhängig. Erst als
die Sowjets merkten, dass ihre Rechnung
nicht aufging, gaben sie die Blockade wieder
auf.

Sixty Years Ago on June 26:
Commemorating the Berlin Airlift
Der Tag der Superlative wurde der
15. April 1949: Damals wurden binnen
24 Stunden 12.840 Tonnen Fracht von 1.398
Maschinen nach West-Berlin geflogen.
Heute erinnert ein Denkmal auf dem vor
dem Flughafen gelegenen Platz der
Luftbrücke an die damalige Zeit. Der
Flughafen Tempelhof wird nun laut
Senatsbeschluss am 31.10.2008 endgültig
stillgelegt. Ein Volksentscheid, zu dem für
den 27. April 2008 in Berlin aufgerufen worden
war und der die Stilllegung von
Tempelhof als Verkehrsflughafen verhindern
sollte, wurde von der Mehrheit der
Berliner Wählern abgelehnt. Es hätten 25
Prozent der wahlberechtigten Berliner
Bürger für die Aufrechterhaltung des
Flugverkehrs stimmen müssen, doch nur
21,7 Prozent wurden erreicht.
Das Flughafengebäudes soll nach Ende
des Flugbetriebes als Kreativ-Forum für
Kultur- und Medienschaffende umgestaltet
werden. Auch das Alliertenmuseum, das
zur Zeit an der Zehlendorfer Clayallee
untergebracht ist, hätte Interesse, seinen
Standort nach Tempelhof zu verlegen. Die
gesamte Anlage steht unter Denkmalschutz
und kann daher nicht, wie in einem früheren
Senatsentwurf geplant, abgerissen
werden. Selbst hier in USA hatte sich eine
starke Lobby zur Rettung Tempelhofs gebildet.
Allerdings war man in diesen Kreisen
vornehmlich der Meinung, dass ganz
Tempelhof, und damit eines der wichtigsten
Zeitzeugnisse deutsch-amerikanischer
Geschichte, abgerissen werden sollte.
Davon könne jedoch, so auch der Berliner
Regierende Oberbürgermeister Klaus
Wowereit nach dem Volksentscheid, nie
die Rede sein, sondern er wolle für ein würdiges
Andenken an die Luftbrücke sorgen.
This year on June 26 we are celebrating
the 60th anniversary of the legendary
Berlin Airlift, the historical event that
saved West Berliners from starvation and
West Berlin from annexation by the Soviets,
thus one of the most important pillars of
German-American friendship. Today many
elderly Berliners still emotionally recall
June 26, 1948, when the first “raisin
bombers” landed at Tempelhof Airport in
the south of West Berlin. The Allied planes
brought diverse supplies to West Berlin,
including food, medications, clothing, spare
parts, tools, fuel, and much more. Through
May 12, 1949, the planes landed and started,
at times in 90 second intervals.
The trigger of the Berlin Blockade was
Soviet anger at the currency reform unilaterally
carried out by the Western allies in
their three zones. The German mark was
introduced overnight and was also immediately
accepted in West Berlin. The Soviets
felt tricked and sealed off Berlin. But
General Clay, the military governor of the
American zone, refused to be brought to his
knees. In the night of June 25, 1948, after
consulting with British Royal Air Force
Commodore Rex Waite, he gave the order

for supplies to be flown to West Berlin, “no
matter the costs”.
For nearly one year 2.2 million people in
West Berlin were dependent on supplies
delivered by air. When the Soviets realized
that their plan would not work, they abandoned
the blockade.
The record-breaking day was April 15,
1949: within 24 hours 1,398 planes flew
12,840 tons of cargo to West Berlin.
Today a monument at Platz der Luftbrücke
(Airlift Square) located in front of
the airport commemorates the event.
According to a Senate resolution, Tempelhof
Airport will be closed to air traffic for
good on October 31, 2008. A referendum
called to prevent the closing of Tempelhof
Airport was rejected on April 27, 2008, by a
majority of Berlin voters. Twenty-five percent

In 1848, a group of Schleswig-Holstein
freedom fighters began fighting for liberty,
democracy, and national unity in a war
with Denmark. Unsuccessful in their struggle,
many of these "Forty-Eighters" emigrated
to the United States, hoping to find the
freedom they had fought for in vain in their
homeland. A great many settled in Davenport,
Iowa, a town emerging on the banks of
the Mississippi River. On the 160th anniversary
of the beginning of the Forty-Eighters'
fight for freedom, a large stone monument
honoring this remarkable group of immigrants
was dedicated.
On March 24, 1898, a large parade and
celebration honoring this group culminated
in the dedication of a huge red granite boulder
at Washington Square Park. Inscribed
on the stone amidst two crossed oak
branches symbolizing the eternal linkage
between Schleswig and Holstein are the
words "SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN KAMPFGE-
NOSSEN 1848-49-50 / THIS STONE WAS
ERECTED MARCH 24, 1898."
Over the next two decades, however,
world events conspired to change America
and Davenport's view toward all things
German. In the wake of rampant anti-
favor.
Plans are underway to turn the airport
building into a creative forum for culture
and media production. The Allied Museum,
presently located on Clayallee in Zehlendorf,
has also expressed interest in moving
to Tempelhof. The entire complex is protected
as a historical monument and thus
cannot be torn down, as planned in an earlier
Senate resolution. Even here in the USA
a strong lobby was formed to save Tempelhof.
Of course, these circles believed that
all of Tempelhof, and thus one of the most
important witnesses of German-American
history, was going to be demolished. But
this will never happen, reassured Berlin
Mayor Klaus Wowereit after the referendum.
Instead he wants to make sure that a
worthy memorial is erected to the Berlin
Airlift.
Schleswig-Holstein Freedom Fighters of
1848-1850 Honored in Iowa
German hysteria during World War I, the
stone monument honoring the Forty-
Eighters was painted yellow, tipped over,
and eventually vanished, never to be seen
again.
But the memory of this remarkable group
of immigrants was not so easily discarded.
Thanks to the efforts of the American/
Schleswig-Holstein Heritage Society and
the Schützenpark Gilde, a replica of the
original monument was re-dedicated on
March 30, 2008, on virtually the same spot
where the original stone sat 110 years ago.
More than 200 people attended the re-dedication
on a beautiful sunny day in
Davenport, less than one block from the
Mississippi River. Dr. Joachim Reppmann
delivered the keynote speech: "A dream
comes true with this re-dedication," commented
the part-time resident of both
Flensburg in the German state of
Schleswig-Holstein, and Northfield, Minnesota.
"I only hope that this will be the first of
many such events that focus the spotlight
on a group that many historians consider
America's most remarkable and unique
group of immigrants."

Weingut Wente
Von allen Weingütern in Kalifornien ist das Weingut der
Familie Wente, das 1883 von Carl Heinrich Wente, einem
deutschen Einwanderer, gegründet wurde, dasjenige, welches
am längsten im Besiz der gleichen Familie blieb und von
Generation zu Generation weitergeführt wurde. Fast 3 000 Hektar
Land in den besten Lagen der Weinregion im Osten der San
Francisco Bay, dem Livermore Valley und der Region Arroyo Seco
in der Nähe von Monterey gehören zu den Wente Vineyards.
Das Weingut Wente überstand schwierige Zeiten, wie beispielsweise
die Prohibition in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts, und
auch die Phase im neuen Jahrtausend, als internationale
Unternehmen begannen, kleinere Winzereien im groβen Stil

führenden amerikanischen Weinmagazine wissen die Weine von

Wente Vineyards
Celebrates Its 125th Anniversary
Founded in 1883 by German immigrant Carl Heinrich Wente,
Wente Vineyards is the longest continuously operated family
owned winery in California. The winery farms nearly 3,000
acres of estate vineyards in premier winegrowing regions in the
San Francisco Bay, Livermore Valley and Arroyo Seco, Monterey.
The winery survived Prohibition in the first half of the 20th Century,
and, in the new millennium, held fast through the massive sell-off of
family wineries to multinational corporations. Along the way, the
family pioneered varietal labeling, protection of open agricultural
space from urban sprawl, and it was one of the first wineries to add
fine-dining, live music venues and golf championships to its wine
business. Today, nearly 80% of all Chardonnay planted in California
is derived from the Wente Clone. Coincidentally this year, the
Culinary Institute of America (CIA) inducted Wente Vineyards'
founder, Carl Heinrich Wente, into the Vintners Hall of Fame as a
"Pioneer" on March 7th, 2008.
After learning about winemaking from Charles Krug, Carl
Heinrich Wente, recognized that the warm days and cool nights
influenced by fog and breezes from the Pacific Ocean and the San
Francisco Bay as well as the gravelly soils of the Livermore Valley
were ideal for growing grapes and he purchased his first 48 acres
and planted vineyards.
In 1918, C. H. Wente's sons Ernest and Herman joined the business.
The winery is now managed by the fourth generation of the
Wente family, Eric, Philip, Carolyn, and the fifth generation family
members, Christine and Karl. The Estate Grown wines include some
excellent Chardonnays and Rieslings as well as Cabernet
Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot. Each wine in the Estate Grown
series has a distinctive style based on the vineyards and region
where it was grown. The wines also have unique names that relate
to the history of Wente Vineyards winemaking tradition and premier
estate vineyards.
Despite their distinctive character and excellent quality, Wente
wines are very affordable. It’s therefore no surprise that some of the
Wente wines have been recently recognized by leading wine magazines.
In September 2007, Wente’s Riverbank Riesling Chardonnay
2006 received 86 points from the ‘Wine Enthusiast,” and in October

Ostracized Music
Concert at the Goethe Institute

An evening with music by ostracized composers, held under
the auspices of the Consul General Christian Stocks and
with members of the Jewish community and the University
of Los Angeles in attendance, has once more proven the importance
of resurrecting their music at any given opportunity. Los
Angeles has always been symbolic as the onetime haven for
artists persecuted by the Nazis. As James Conlon, the music director
of Los Angeles, has indicated with his project Recovered
Voices, the need to make their music household names in the near
future is pressing. The Goethe Institute has now joined forces with
local Jewish institutions to launch the event Ostracized Music in
2009. The recent concert preview with piano artists Friederike
Haufe and Volker Ahmels served as a reminder of their undeniable
musical value. Both artists are longtime advocates of ostracized
music, both in Germany and across Europe. Ahmels serves in a
dual function at the Music Academy of Rostock. He is the
Academy’s director as well as the founder and headmaster of the
Centre for Ostracized Music. He is also organizing annual master
classes with colleagues from the Czech Republic and Israel to
promote the importance of history, music and remembrance. Their
common goal is to raise not only awareness in young people with
musical aspirations, but first and foremost to pass on enthusiasm
for the music among the upcoming generation.

performing a collection of World Lullabies in eight languages with
the Dreamgates Children’s Movement at venues like Carnegie
Hall, and teaches at NYU’s famous Tisch School for the Arts. In
addition, Schwaiger gives singing lessons to the Lubavitcher
Rabbis of Crown Heights in Brooklyn. A beautiful story of mutual
respect and of overcoming the obstacles presented by different
faiths, through the universal language of music.

of the “Bavarian Pope”. Pope Benedict XVI also visited Yorkville, known
as the former “Kleindeutschland” when giving a Mass at St. Joseph’s
which was founded in 1873 by the first of tens of thousands of German-
Americans who for more than a century created a German-speaking “village”
of Yorkville’s butcher shops, beer gardens, dance halls, restaurants,
and theaters.

The neighborhood became a 2-week media frenzy of reporters, photographers,
and film crews in anticipation of his visit. The once famous
German-American community suddenly became recognized after
decades of oblivion. St. Joseph’s is no longer predominantly German;
however they do still hold a monthly Mass in German. On April 18, the
Pope stressed in his sermon, that we embrace the unity of spirit amid a
diversity of believers.
Last year in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the von Steuben Parade, we
tried to honor this once internationally famous landmark in New York City
comprising German-speaking Eastern and Middle Europeans, an era
from the 30s through the 60s, by requesting to name 86th Street, the heart
of Yorkville, “General von Steuben Way”, but our local community board,
and city council representative turned down this attempt to commemorate
a part of this city’s history. Then God sent us the Pope. We couldn’t do
better than that!

of German-American history in New York.

2008-2009 PRE DISSERTATION AWARD WINNERS
On April 4, 2008, the Council for European Studies (CES) announced the
winners of the 2008-2009 Pre Dissertation Award in New York.
The winners are awarded a stipend for travel and stay in Europe between
summer 2008 and summer 2009 and a conference stipend to attend the
17th International CES Conference of European Studies to take place in
early spring of 2010.

Nespresso
heißt der neue Kaffeegenuss
Die Traditionsfirma Miele stellte die erste
Einbaukaffeemaschine mit Kapselsystem vor. Nespresso
nennt sich das Kaffeesystem von Nestlé, das die Miele
CVA-Serie füttert und unter anderem von Hollywood-Star George

Clooney beworben wird. Kaffeemaschine ist für das
Kaffeesystem wohl eher eine Untertreibung – etwa so als würde
man einen Ferrari lediglich als Auto bezeichnen. Auf Knopfdruck
bereiten die Geräte aus der Miele CVA-2000-Serie, wie die Miele
Ingenieure versprechen, den perfekten Kaffee aus der Kapsel.
Und das Vergnügen ist auch entsprechend kostspielig.
Dafür füttert man die CVA 2000 nur mit Wasser und Milch, legt
die Kapseln ein und muss sich dann nur noch mit den Knöpfen
beschäftigen, die auf entsprechenden Druck den gewünschten
Espresso, Cappuccino, Latte oder Kaffee in verschiedenen
Geschmacksrichtungen liefern. Die Nespresso-Maschinen arbeiten
mit den vorkonfektionierten, luftdicht versiegelten Nespresso-
Kapseln. Nach dem Rösten und Mahlen werden die Kapseln luftdicht
versiegelt und sind so nahezu unbegrenzt haltbar – und das
ohne jeglichen Aromaverlust, so verspricht die
Informationsbroschüre. Ebenso wie die Maschine selbst sind die
Kapseln nicht gerade billig, aber wer sich für eine solche
Maschine mit System entscheidet, der sieht auch nicht auf den
Cent.
Auch das Aufschäumen der Milch hat die Maschine voll im Griff.
Und wenn man dem Kaffeesystem kurz erklärt wie man seinen
Kaffee gerne gebrüht hätte, merkt es sich das und liefert auf
Anforderung immer wieder genau die gewünschte Mischung.
Seit der Kaffee seinen Siegeszug im 17.Jahrhundert antrat -
1672 wurde das erste Kaffeehaus in Paris eröffnet, ein Jahr später
hatten dann die Bremer das erste Kaffeehaus auf deutschem
Boden – hat sich die Lust auf den Genuss kaum geändert. Seit dem
Jahr 1720 wird in Leipzig Kaffee ausgeschenkt. Die Gaststätte
„Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum” ist nach dem „Café Procope” in
Paris die älteste bis heute durchgängig betriebene
Kaffeeschänke Europas. 1732 stellte Johann Sebastian Bach
seine „Kaffeekantate” in einem Leipziger Kaffeehaus vor. Und in
Deutschland wurde Kaffee nach dem Ende des II. Weltkriegs zu
einem Symbol von Wiederaufbau und Wirtschaftswunder. Kaffee
trinken bedeutete, sich wieder etwas leisten zu können.
Und diesem Gefühl tragen die Nespresso-Maschinen von Miele
Rechnung. Abschließend sei noch ein türkisches Gesetz aus frühen
Zeiten erwähnt, das zeigt, wie wichtig den Menschen der
Kaffee als Genussmittel war. Das Gesetz besagte, dass wenn ein
Ehemann der Gattin den Kaffee verweigere, so sei dies ein triftiger
Grund für eine Scheidung. Und Situationen wie diese lassen sich
leicht mit Nespresso und den Miele CVA-Kaffeesystemen verhindern.

The tradition-rich company Miele has launched the first builtin
coffee machine with a capsule system. Nespresso is the
name of the coffee system from Nestlé, which feeds the
Miele CVA series and is advertised by Hollywood star George
Clooney. Coffee machine is rather an understatement – as if you
were calling a Ferrari merely a car. Press a button and the
machine from the Miele CVA-200 series prepares, as Miele engineers
promise, the perfect coffee from a capsule. And the indulgence
is also costly.
You need to add only water and milk to the CVA 2000, insert the
capsule, and then adjust the buttons for the right pressure to produce
espresso, cappuccino, latte or coffee in various flavors.
The Nespresso machines work with the prepackaged, airtightsealed
Nespresso capsules. After being roasted and ground the
capsules are sealed airtight and can thus be stored for ages – and
without any loss of flavor, promises the information brochure. Like
the machine itself, the capsules are not exactly cheap, but whoever
decides for a machine with a system is not looking at cents.
The machine even perfectly masters foaming milk. And if you
briefly explain to the coffee system how you like to have your coffee
brewed, it memorizes the information and delivers on demand
exactly the desired blend.
Since coffee started its triumphal procession in the 17th century
– in 1672 the first coffeehouse was opened in Paris, a year later
Bremen saw the opening of the first coffeehouse on German soil
– desire for the pleasure of drinking coffee has hardly changed.
Coffee has been served in Leipzig since 1720. After Café
Procope in Paris the tavern “Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum” is the
oldest continuously open coffeehouse in Europe. In 1732 Johann
Sebastian Bach presented his “coffee cantata” in a coffeehouse
in Leipzig. And in Germany after World War II coffee became a
symbol of reconstruction and the economic boom. Drinking coffee
meant being able to afford something again.

In conclusion, we should mention a Turkish law from the past that
shows how important coffee was to people as a luxury item. The
law stipulated that a husband declining the coffee of his spouse
was good grounds for divorce. And situations like these can be
easily avoided with Nespresso and the Miele CVA coffee systems.

By the time, you read this, twenty-one-year-old Cyndie Allemann
will have competed in four Firestone Indy Lights Series races
including the American 100 at the famed Indianapolis Motor
Speedway! Amazingly, Miss Allemann, a road racer, had her first race
in America on the high-speed oval at Homestead-Miami Speedway in
Florida, in March, where she performed quite well. She followed with
a pair of top ten finishes at Florida’s St. Petersburg Grand Prix.
The Firestone Indy Lights Series (formerly Indy Pro Series) is one
step below the Indy Racing League (IRL) and the Indianapolis 500.
Racing in Indy Lights, Cyndie will actually experience the excitement,
sights and sounds of the 500 as Indy Lights competes as a feature
event to the famed 500-mile race
Cyndie’s father Kurt was a Karting champion and her brother Ken
has been a stalwart in Swiss Karting winning the Swiss Karting
Championship seven times. It only seems logical that the young
woman from Moutier in the French speaking Bernese Jura section of
Switzerland would become an auto racer. That she would come to
America and race in the Firestone Indy Lights Series or the
Indianapolis 500 never entered her mind, she was more focused on
Formula One!
Starting on Karts, which is the school ground for auto racing,
Cyndie became the first female European Karting Champion in 1999.
After nearly ten years racing Karts and sitting out in the open, she
turned to single seater racing cars with bodies, racing for two years
in the German Formula Three Championship. Last year, Cyndie moved
into the ultra competitive Formula Three Euroseries. Californian
Charlie Kimball, formerly the Friday test driver for A1 Grand Prix Team
USA, currently races in the Formula Three Euroseries. McLaren’s
Formula One superstar Lewis Hamilton is a graduate of the Formula
Three Euroseries.
When asked about her decision why to race in America, she
answered: “The competition. The cars are more powerful and I’m
looking forward to racing on ovals”.And in a true racer spirit, she continued:
“I like to fight with the other guys”.

Winnetou und Old Shatterhand lassen grüßen
Karl May Verleger Bernard Schmid feierte Geburtstag in Kalifornien.
Erste Gespräche zur Neuverfilmung von Winnetou I.
Fast hatte man den Eindruck, man sei auf dem Filmset eines
der berühmten Karl-May-Filme gelandet, als wir am 25. März
in der Abenddämmerung die gewundene, steile Straße
durch die rauhen Hügeln des Topanga Canyon zur „Esperanza
Ranch” hinauffuhren. Der Gedanke an den legendären, deutschen
Romanschriftsteller, der unvergessliche Figuren wie
„Winnetou“ und „Old Shatterhand“ schuf, und der, auch mehr als
95 Jahre nach seinem Tod, immer noch der meistgelesene
Autor deutscher Sprache ist, lag nicht
so fern, denn wir waren auf dem Weg zu einem
Karl-May-Abend, zu dem Sabine und Dr. Malcolm
Lesavoy eingeladen hatten.
Anlass war der Geburtstag des Karl-May-
Verlegers Bernhard Schmid, der seinen Urlaub zu
der Zeit in Kalifornien verbrachte und zu dem
Sabine Niederberghaus-Lesavoy schon seit längerem
geschäftlich in Kontakt stand, da sie die
amerikanischen Filmrechte für eine Neuverfilmung
der Winnetou-Geschichten erworben
hat. Schon seit ihrer Kindheit ist sie ein großer
Karl-May-Fan und hat als Kind mit ihren Freunden
viele Szenen aus den Winnetou-Filmen nachgespielt.
Da sie auf einem Gestüt in der Nähe von
Coesfeld aufwuchs, wurden auch – wenn die Eltern nicht hinsahen
– schnell mal die Sattel von den Ponys genommen, und im
Indianerstil ging es dann über die westfälische „Prärie”.
Stilecht empfing die engagierte Gastgeberin, die sich auf ihrer
Ranch um sechs Pferde und fünf Hunde kümmert, ihre Gäste im
Indianerkleid. Es war ihr nicht nur gelungen, Bernhard Schmid mit
der Anwesenheit von Filmstar Elke Sommer zu überraschen, die

das mutige Western-Girl „Annie” in der Karl-May-Verfilmung
„Unter Geiern” spielte und jahrelang bei den Karl-May-
Festspielen in Espe mitwirkte, sondern sie hatte auch Helga
Zeiner, eine deutsche Schriftstellerin, die gerade die Geschichte
von Winnetou I neu erzählt und auch eine Drehbuchvorlage dazu
abgeliefert hat, und ihren Mann Manfred eingeladen. Auch
Schauspieler Christian Oliver und seine Freundin Jessica sowie
TV-Star Eric Braeden und Journalisten vom
Hessischen Rundfunk und ARD Radio waren
gekommen. Selbst Mario Guerreiro, vielbeschäftigter
Marketingleiter von Audi USA, den Sabine
Niederberghaus durch ein gemeinsames Projekt
kennen gelernt hat, und seine Frau hatten es sich
nicht nehmen lassen, diesen deutschen Karl-
May-Abend im Topanga Canyon zu erleben.
Das Erstaunlichste am Phänomen Karl May ist,
dass er, der im 19. Jahrhundert in Deutschland
lebte, selbst nie vorher eines der Länder, die er in
seinen Büchern so anschaulich zum Leben
erweckt, besucht hatte. Alle Reiseinformationen
sind jedoch exakt recherchiert, die Handlung seiner
Romane basiert teils auf den Erfahrungen
anderer und ist teilweise auch frei erfunden, was
Karl May zu Lebzeiten in viele Schwierigkeiten brachte.
Man darf gespannt sein, wie sich das Projekt „Karl May Filme –
Made in USA” entwickelt. Zunächst soll ein guter amerikanischer
Drehbuchautor gewonnen werden. Denn ohne gutes Drehbuch,
so warnte auch Eric Braeden, kann man keine Produzenten für
eine solche Unternehmung finden.

Greetings from
Winnetou and
Old Shatterhand
Karl May publisher Bernard Schmid celebrated his birthday in
California. Preliminary talks about a new film version of Winnetou I.
We practically felt as if we were on the film set of one of
the famous Karl May films while driving up the steep,
winding road through the rough hills of Topanga
Canyon at dusk on March 25. The legendary German novelist who
created such unforgettable characters as “Winnetou” and “Old
Shatterhand” and who, more than 95 years after his death, is still
the most read German language author, was not so far from our
thoughts, as we were on the way to a Karl May Evening hosted by
Sabine and Dr. Malcolm Lesavoy. The occasion was the birthday
of Karl May publisher Bernhard Schmid, who was spending his
vacation in California and has a longstanding business contact
with Sabine Niederberghaus-Lesavoy, since she had bought the
American film rights for a new film version of the Winnetou films.
Since her childhood she has been a big Karl May fan, and as a
child she and her friends reenacted many scenes from the
Winnetou films. Because she grew up on a horse farm near
Coesfeld, they – when their parents weren’t looking – would
quickly take the saddles off the ponies, and ride Indian-style
across the Westphalian “prairie”.
The dedicated hostess, who tends six horses and five dogs on
her ranch, met her guests in true Karl May style, dressed in Indian
clothing. She was not only able to surprise Bernhard Schmid with
the presence of film star Elke Sommer, who played the courageous
Western girl “Annie” in the film version of Karl May’s
“Among Vultures” and for years had participated in the Karl May
Festivals in Espe, but she had also invited Helga Zeiner, a German
author, who has just completed a revision of the novel “Winnetou
I”, and her husband Manfred. Also present was actor Christian
Oliver and his girlfriend Jessica, as well as TV star Eric Braeden
and journalists from Hessischer Rundfunk and ARD Radio. Even
Mario Guerreiro, the very busy marketing director from Audi USA,
whom Sabine Niederberghaus had met in a joint project, and his
wife were unwilling to miss the opportunity to experience this
German Karl May Evening in Topanga Canyon.
We should explain to our American readers that a real Karl May
cult exists in Germany, especially due to the Western films, loosely
based on his novels, that were released in the 1960s and 1970s.
Any knowledge that an average German has about Indians in

auf der Dude Ranch
Für Julia Kull beginnt der Arbeitsalltag mit dem
Sonnenaufgang: Dann steht das Füttern von 25 Pferden auf
dem Programm. Die 22jährige Dresdnerin arbeitet seit
Januar als Cowgirl auf einer Dude Ranch mitten in den USA – in
der Nähe von Ava, Missouri, unweit der Staatsgrenzen zu
Oklahoma und Arkansas.
Die Bucks and Spurs Ranch umfasst 400 Hektar Land – rund vier
Millionen Quadratmeter. Ruhe und Einsamkeit sind hier garantiert:
Der nächste Nachbar ist rund fünf Meilen entfernt.
Auf der Ranch werden rund 150 Rinder gehalten, die meisten
sind hochwertige Black Angus. Die eigene Zucht erfordert, dass
neugeborene Kälber sofort erstversorgt werden: Jeden Morgen
reiten Julia Kull, ihre aus Luxemburg stammende Kollegin Nadine
Zeitler und Rancher Cecil Huff meilenweit die Weiden ab. Über
Nacht geworfene Jungtiere werden dann mit dem Lasso eingefangen,
bekommen eine Zuchtnummer ins Ohr gestanzt und werden
gewogen. Außerdem wird kontrolliert, ob das Kalb gesund ist
und beim Muttertier Milch saugt.
Zu Julia Kulls Arbeitskleidung gehört neben den ledernen und
an den Säumen ausgefransten Chaps, Cowboyboots und
Cowboyhut auch ein Revolver, den sie, wie im Film, im Holster an
der Hüfte trägt – um damit notfalls wilde Tiere wie Coyoten oder
Bären zu vertreiben, die immer wieder versuchen, die Kälber zu
reißen. Denn wenn es um ihre Kälber geht, verstehen Cowboys
und Cowgirls keinen Spaß: Sie sind schließlich das Kapital der
Ranch.
Neben den Rindern werden auf der Ranch auch Pferde gezüchtet:
Dazu zählen Arbeitstiere für die Cowboys und Cowgirls, in der
Regel American Quarterhorses. Es gibt auch Zugpferde wie zum
Beispiel belgische Kaltblüter. Außerdem züchtet die Ranch
besonders leichtgängige Sport- und Freizeitpferde wie die heimische
Rasse Missouri Foxtrotter, in erster Linie für den Verkauf,
aber auch für die Gäste.
Denn die Ranch hat seit einigen Jahren den Tourismus als weitere
Einnahmequelle entdeckt: Hier wird ein Erlebnisurlaub der
besonderen Art angeboten. Wer will, kann mit den Cowboys und

Wo es noch echte Cowboys und Cowgirls
gibt, hat der Tourist das Gefühl von
Freiheit und Abenteuer
Cowgirls ausreiten, und sie auf ihrem normalen Arbeitsalltag
begleiten. Neben dem Füttern der Pferde und dem Versorgen der
Kälber zählt dazu auch das Ausbessern von Zäunen, das
Reparieren von Telefonleitungen, Schneeräumen im Winter,
Umtriebe der Rinderherden von bereits abgegrasten auf frische
Weiden, aber natürlich auch die Verbringung von Schlachtvieh
auf Auktionen. Außerdem sind die Cowboys alle auch „Erste-
Hilfe-Tierärzte”: Sie schienen angeknackste Knochen bei den
Pferden, injizieren Medikamente und Impfstoffe oder schneiden
Abszesse aus den Hufen.
Urlauber können es aber gerne auch ruhig angehen lassen –
niemand muss mitarbeiten. Auch wer nur geringe oder gar keine
Reitkenntnisse hat, ist hier willkommen. Man kann, wenn man
möchte, Reitunterricht nehmen, es gibt Kurse für Anfänger und
Fortgeschrittene. Dabei werden besonders die Methoden des
„Natural Horsemenship” eingesetzt – im Gegensatz zu der harten,
of noch von militärischen Normen aus dem 19. Jahrhundert
geprägtem „Zucht- und Ordnungsstil” der deutschen Reitschule
versuchen die Amerikaner, die natürlichen Instinkte von Pferden
zu „lesen” und dann beim Training einzusetzen. Ziel ist, zwischen
Ross und Reiter eine Vertrauensbasis aufzubauen und so das
Reiterlebnis für beide zu einem Vergnügen werden zu lassen.
Wer allerdings dann im Sattel sitzt und mit den Cowboys über
das weite Land reitet, wird einige unvergessliche Augenblicke
erleben. Die Ranch liegt in den Ozark Mountains, einem
Mittelgebirge mit hügeliger, reich bewaldeter Landschaft, zahlreichen
Flüssen, Seen und viel unberührter Natur. Adler und
Bussarde ziehen ihre Kreise, und im Sommer kommen
Forellenangler in den Flüssen auf ihre Kosten.

Where Real Cowboys and Cowgirls Still Roam:
Vacations on the Dude Ranch
Julia Kull’s working day begins at sunrise. Feeding 25 horses
starts off her routine. The 22-year-old woman from Dresden
is working as a cowgirl on a dude ranch in the middle of the
United States – near Ava, Missouri, not far from the border to
Oklahoma and Arkansas.
The Bucks and Spurs Ranch encompasses 400 hectares of land
– over 13 million square feet. Peace and solitude are guaranteed
here. The next neighbor is about 5 miles away.
Around 150 cattle are kept on the ranch, most of them prized
Black Angus. Breeding their own cattle means that newborn
calves must be immediately looked after. Every morning Julia Kull
rides for miles across the fields with her colleague Nadine Zeitler
from Luxemburg and rancher Cecil Huff. They lasso young calves
born overnight, brand a number in their ear, and weigh them. They
also check to see if the calf is healthy and is breastfeeding from its
mother.
Julia Kull’s working clothes consist of leather chaps with frayed
hems, cowboy boots, a cowboy hat as well as a revolver worn in a
holster on her hip, like in the movies – in order to drive off wild animals
such as coyotes or bears that regularly try to attack the
calves. When it comes to their calves, cowboys and cowboys
don’t fool around. After all they are the ranch’s assets.
Besides cattle the ranch breeds horses. These include workhorses
for the cowboys and cowgirls, typically American quarter
horses as well as draft horses such as the Belgian draft horse.
They also breed especially agile race and leisure horses such as
the native breed Missouri Foxtrotter, mostly for sale but also for
guests.
For several years now these ranches have discovered another
source of revenue in tourism. They offer a special kind of adventure
vacation. Guests can ride out with the cowboys and cowgirls
if they wish and accompany them during their normal working day.
In addition to feeding the horses and looking after the calves they
improve fences, repair telephone lines, remove snow in the winter,
drive cattle herds to fresh pastures for grazing, and take
slaughter animals to auctions. The cowboys are all also trained as
“first aid veterinarians.” They splint broken bones for horses,
inject medications and vaccinations or cut abscesses out of
hooves.
But vacationers can also take it easy – nobody has to work.
Even those with little or even no riding experience are welcome
here. Guests can take riding lessons if they wish. Courses are
offered for beginners and advanced riders. Here the methods of
“natural horsemanship” are taught. In contrast to the harsh, oldfashioned
German riding school influenced by nineteenth-century

military norms, Americans try to “read” the natural instincts of the
horses and to engage them in training. The goal is to build mutual
trust between steed and rider and make the ride enjoyable for
both.
Guests who saddle up and ride across the vast fields with the
cowboys will experience unforgettable moments. The ranch lies
in the Ozark Mountains, a low mountain range with hilly, thickly
forested countryside, numerous rivers, lakes, and a lot of pristine
nature. Eagles and buzzards circle, and in the summers fishermen
catch their share of trout in the rivers.
The Bucks and Spurs Ranch frequently receives vacationers
from Germany – and especially for Europeans this year is optimal
for traveling to the United States because of the favorable

TRAVELING TIPS
Dude ranches typically lie in remote areas. Thus it is almost
always necessary to fly into a small airport in the American hinterland,
and then drive a few hours with a car to the ranch. However,
the ranch owner typically picks up guests from the airport and
drives them back.
Most dude ranches are located in the Western United States, and
nearly all of them require connecting flights from Dallas, Denver,
Phoenix or Los Angeles.
RIDING EXPERIENCE
Of course previous riding experience comes in handy but is not
mandatory. Many ranches have brought absolute novices so far in
their horsemanship skills that they can ride out at a gallop with the
cowboys.
But guests should definitely bring a love of animals with them –
besides horses and cows most ranches also have quite a wide
range of other fauna such as hens, sheep, goats, dogs, cats,
ducks, geese and native wild predators such as foxes, wolves,
coyotes, and bears.
CHILDREN FRIENDLY
All ranches are very children friendly and offer numerous programs
for children of every age.
ROOM AND BOARD
Most accommodations are rustic, but very comfortable. Guests at
the Bucks and Spurs Ranch are housed in log cabins. The food is
generally quite hearty. American breakfast with eggs, toast,
bacon, roast potatoes, orange juice and coffee. Lunch usually
consists of sandwiches. There is often a good-sized steak with
vegetables for dinner.
PRICES
Lodging on these ranches costs between 70 and 600 dollars a
night per person, depending on meals, length of stay, housing and
other services. The average price per night at the Bucks and
Spurs Ranch is around 270 dollars. Guests who leave the ranch
and explore the area on their own with a rental car will be pleasantly
surprised. Most expenses such as eating, drinking, souvenirs
and gas are much cheaper than in the urban centers of the
USA and Europe.

Mit einem großen Aufgebot verschiedener Chöre und Musiker
wurde im texanischen Fredricksburg am 14. März im Rahmen
des 17. Van der Stucken Festivals der 150. Geburtstag des
Komponisten und Dirigenten Frank Van Der Stucken gefeiert, der 1858
als Sohn deutsch-belgischer Eltern in Fredricksburg geboren wurde.
Zu Beginn der Festlichkeiten, die von der German Heritage Foundation
in Fredricksburg ausgerichtet wurden, hieß Jane Woellhof, Co-
Founder der Van Der Stucken Stiftung, alle Musikliebhaber herzlich
willkommen und eröffnete das umfangreiche Programm, durch das
Larry Wolz von der Hardin Simmons University als MC führte. Er sprach
unter anderem auch über den aktuellen Stand seiner Van der Stucken
Recherche und trug eines der Lieder des amerikanischen Komponisten
vor.
Frank Van der Stucken ist eine der Leitfiguren des amerikanischen
Musiklebens. Mit der Arion Society in New York veranstaltete er eine
ganze Reihe von amerikanischen Erstaufführungen europäischer
Werke (Berlioz, Bruch, Benoit), gleichzeitig verteidigte er aber auch die
junge amerikanische Musik, indem er Konzertreihen mit ausschließlich
amerikanischen Komponisten organisierte.
Franks musikalische Ausbildung begann bereits im Alter von acht
Jahren. Er studierte Geige unter Émile Wambach und Komposition
sowie Musiktheorie unter Pierre Benoit. Bereits mit 16 Jahren hatte er
zwei große Werke geschaffen: Ein Te Deum für Solostimmen, Chor und
Orchester sowie ein orchestrales Ballet. Nach seinem Besuch der
Wagner Festspiele in Bayreuth im Jahre 1876, blieb er zwei Jahre lang
in Leipzig, um mit mit Carl Reinecke, Victor Langer und Edvard Grieg zu
studieren.
Später reiste er durch Europa und arbeite mit Giuseppe Verdi,
Emmanuel Chabrier and Jules Massener zusammen. 1881 wurde er
zum Kapellmeister des Breslauer Stadttheaters ernannt und komponierte
als Teil seiner Arbeit 1882 die Bühnenmusik für Shakespeares
„The Tempest - der Sturm.“
In New York City dirigierte er das erste Konzert, das ausschließlich
amerikanischen Komponisten gewidmet war und 1889 dirigierte er
während der Pariser Weltausstellung das erste europäische Konzert
mit lediglich amerikanischem Programm.
Van der Stucken wurde für seine Verdienste um die Entwicklung von
Chor- und Orchestermusik in den Vereinigten Staaten geehrt –
besonders jedoch für seine selbstlosen Bemühungen im Einsatz für die

On March 14, 2008, the 17th annual Van der Stucken Festival Concert in
Fredericksburg took place, organized by the German Heritage
Foundation. This year's festival celebrated the 150th anniversary of the
birth of the composer and music director Frank van der Stucken, a
Fredericksburg native of German-Belgian parentage. After a warm
welcome by Jane Woellhoff, co-founder of the Van der Stucken
Foundation, Dr. Larry Wolz of the Hardin Simmons University took over
as master of ceremonies.
Frank Van der Stucken, is considered one of the leading figures in
American music. With the Arion Society in New York, he organized several
American premieres of European pieces (Berlioz, Bruch, and
Benoit), while also promoting the nascent American music scene by
organizing concert series featuring only American composers.
Van der Stucken’s musical education began when he was eight. He
studied violin with Émile Wambach and composition and theory with
Pierre Benoit. By age sixteen he had completed two major original
works: a Te Deum for solo voices, chorus, and orchestra, as well as an
orchestral ballet. After a visit to Wagner's Bayreuth Festival in 1876,
Van der Stucken settled in Leipzig, Germany, to study for two years with
Carl Reinecke, Victor Langer, and Edvard Grieg, and later,he worked
with Giuseppe Verdi, Emmanuel Chabrier, and Jules Massenet. In 1881,
he was appointed Kapellmeister (music director) of the Breslau
Stadttheater and, as part of his duties, composed incidental music for
Shakespeare's The Tempest in 1882.
The first concert he conducted in New York City was devoted exclusively
to American composers, and at the World Exposition in Paris in
1889 he conducted the first European concert with an exclusively
American program. Van der Stucken has been honored for his tireless
efforts in developing choral and orchestral music in the United States
and especially for his altruistic endeavors on behalf of the young
American composers of his times.
The German Heritage Foundation headquartered in Fredericksburg,

Traum. Glücklicherweise hatte sie nicht nur Talent sondern auch
einen Agenten, der mit Marcel Prawy befreundet war, dem
Dramaturgen der Wiener Staatsoper. 1981 arbeitete Marcel an
einem Projekt, das die Wurzeln des modernen Musical Theaters in
der Wiener Operette zeigen sollte, und engagierte Neva für seine
Produktion.
„Wien ist eine sehr romantische Stadt und prompt verliebte ich
mich dort auch. Marcel Prawy kannte Prof. Frank Kubik und wollte
ihn in diesem Stück unterbringen. Frank und ich trafen uns und
einige Monate später waren wir verheiratet“, erzählte sie mir bei
unserem Gespräch in ihrem New Yorker Studio. „Es war wild. Ich
kam hierher zurück, lagerte alle meine Sachen ein und ging zurück
nach Wien.”
„Wien war absolut überwältigend. Es gibt dort so viele türkische
und osteuropäische Einflüsse in Architektur, Essen und
Musik. Und obwohl Wien eine Zwei-Millionen-Stadt ist, ist alles
zentral gelegen und gut erreichbar.”
Powers kann auf einen umfangreichen Lebenslauf zurückblicken:
„Ich sang Oper, Konzerte, Liederabende und Musicals. Ich
war in der Fernsehshow Der Leihopa und spielte die
Schwiegertochter aus Amerika. Ich hatte auch einen lustigen Job
in der Werbung, durch den ich quasi das Gesicht der dortigen
Raiffeisenbank Zentralbank (RZB - Anm. d. Red.) wurde. Und ich
sah wohl so typisch österreicherisch aus, dass man mich ein Jahr
lang für alle Anzeigen und Fernsehspots der RZB gebucht hat.”
Obwohl sie derzeit in New York lebt, fühlt sie sich immer noch
eng mit Wien verbunden und ging im Herbst vergangenen Jahres
zurück, um Souvenir im Englischen Theater zu geben, wo sie 26
Jahre zuvor erstmals aufgetreten war. „Es ist eine Tour-de-Force-
Rolle, es sind nur zwei Leute in der ganzen Show, so dass du wirklich
in Topform sein musst“. Neva segelt derzeit auf der
Norwegian Star die Mexikanische Riviera entlang, als
Musikalische Leiterin von ‘Music of the Night’, mit der Musik von
Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Neva Rae Powers always knew she wanted to be in show
business. Born in Indiana, and educated at the Cincinnati
College & Conservatory of Music, she moved to New York
in the early 70’s pursuing her dream. Fortunately, not only did she
have talent, but her agent was a friend of Marcel Prawy, who was
the dramaturge at the Vienna State Opera. In 1981, Marcel was
working on a project that would demonstrate the origins of modern
musical theatre in the Viennese Operetta, and cast Neva in his
production.
“I met somebody there, and fell in love. Vienna’s a very romantic
city…Marcel Prawy knew Prof. Frank Kubik and wanted to feature
him in this piece. Frank and I met, and a few months later we
were married.” she laughs, as I sit with her in her New York studio.
“It was wild. I came back here, put all my stuff into storage and
went back to Vienna.”
“Vienna was romantic. Because there’s an influence there from
the Turks & Eastern Europe, in the architecture, and in the food
and music, which I loved - culturally, everything is fantastic. Even
though it’s a city of 2 million people, everything is centrally located.
”
When I asked about working in Vienna, Neva revealed her
extensive resume: “I did opera, concerts, recitals, musicals. I was
on a television show, ‘Der Leihopa’…I was the daughter-in-law
from America. I also had a funny gig, where I was the face of the
Raiffeisen Zentralbank. And I was such a typical Austrian, that I
did all of their print work and television commercials for a year.”
Though presently a ‘New Yorker’, Neva still feels a strong tie to
Vienna, and last fall went back to perform Souvenir at the English
Theatre where she had first performed 26 years earlier. “It’s a tour
de force part; there are only two people in the entire show, so you
really have to be on your game.” Neva is currently sailing the
Mexican Riviera on the Norwegian Star, as the musical director
for ‘Music of the Night’, featuring the music of Andrew Lloyd
Webber.

KAMMERORCHESTER SPEKTRUM CONCERTS BERLIN

Mut zur Brücke - so wird das mit Solisten von internationalem
Rang besetzte Kammerorchester Spektrum Concerts von der
Presse gerne überschrieben. In diesem Jahr feiert das von dem
amerikanischen Cellisten Frank Dodge gegründete Ensemble
20jähriges Bestehen. Seit 2006 wird die musikalische
Verbindung zwischen Amerika und Europa intensiviert und auf
eine neue Grundlage gestellt. In den USA nämlich möchte Dodge
nicht einfach nur Musik machen, sondern eine Botschaft der
gemeinsamen kulturellen Wurzeln überbringen, an ihren humanistischen
Kern erinnern. Mit Konzerten im Goethe Institut Los
Angeles, und Leon Feuchtwangers Villa Aurora bei Pacific
Palisades, lag der Schwerpunkt auf der Musik Ernst Tochs. Der
gebürtige Wiener und führende Avantgardekomponist des frühen
20.Jahrhunderts, nach Hitlers Machtergreifung ins Exil
gezwungen, erfuhr in Kalifornien eine fruchtbare zweite
Schaffensperiode und machte sich als Lehrer einen Namen.
Seine letzte Ruhestätte fand er 1964 in Los Angeles.
Spektrum hat an einer Ernst Toch Renaissance erheblichen
Anteil, insbesondere gehören seine Werke zum festen
Bestandteil der Kammermusikreihe in der Berliner Philharmonie,

Spektrum Concerts Berlin performs in
Los Angeles
Building bridges takes courage - a label the press likes to attach
to the Spektrum Concerts Chamber Orchestra, whose soloists
each enjoy reputable international acclaim. In 2008, this unusual
ensemble, founded by American cellist Frank Dodge, is celebrating
its 20th anniversary. The musical relationship between
America and Europe has been redefined and intensified since
2006. Dodge is particularly interested in fostering the message of
common cultural roots between the two continents. Two recent
concerts at the Goethe Institute in Los Angeles and Leon
Feuchtwanger’s Villa Aurora in Pacific Palisades have exclusively
featured the music of Ernst Toch. Born in Vienna and one
of the foremost avant-garde composers of the early 20th century,
Toch was forced into exile after Hitler ascended to power,
making California his home where he successfully rebuilt his
composing career and worked as a teacher. He died in Los
Angeles in 1964. Spektrum Concerts is largely responsible for a
Toch Renaissance in the music circuit, and his works have
become a staple within the chamber music programs of the
Berliner Philharmonie, the European home of the orchestra.
Since 1992, Spektrum has joined forces with local museums and
launched a concert series featuring exiled writers as well as
composers. Its efforts are sponsored in the traditional American
manner through courageous individuals, firms and foundations
who share the transatlantic vision.

talentierte, aber sehr gewalttätige Insassin, gespielt von Hannah
Herzsprung, Tochter des deutschen TV Schauspielers Berndt
Herzsprung, die in dieser Rolle ihr beeindruckendes Filmdebüt gibt.
Von dieser Prämisse aus entwickelt sich eine interessante
Beziehung, die uns auch in die Vergangenheit der Klavierlehrerin
während des Zweiten Weltkrieges bringt. Fesselnder Film mit einem
beeindruckenden Soundtrack von Annette Focks.
Regisseur Chris Kraus war nach langer Suche und Anhören von
Testfilmmusik zahlreicher deutscher Komponisten aufdie Musik von
Annette Focks gestoβen. Sie hat bisher viel für das deutsche
Fernsehen komponiert und stellte mit dieser Musik, die ein essentieller
und starker Charakter im Film ist, ihr Talent unter Beweis.
Der Film wird in den USA durch den neu gegründeten Autobahn
Filmverleih, Tochter der deutschen Senator Film Verleih GmbH, in die
Kinos gebracht.
Ein wunderbarer Film und die Art deutscher Filmkunst, von der wir
mehr sehen möchten.

Vor dem leicht romantischen Hintergrund der Anfänge professionellen
Footballs in den 20er Jahren des vorigen Jahrhunderts in
den USA spielt sich Renée Zellweger an der Seite von George
Clooney, der auch Regie führte, in die Herzen der Zuschauer. Eine
herzerfrischende Komödie, in der John Krasinski, bekannt aus der
Fernsehserie „The Office“, einen Kriegshelden spielt, dessen von
seinem skrupellosen Promotor publiziertes Heldentum und außergewöhnliches
Footballtalent dem Film ständig neue Richtungen gibt. In
dieser gelungenen Hommage an die klassischen Hollywood
Komödien verwickelt sich die Halb-Schweizerin Renée Zellweger
während ihres Auftrags, Krasinskis Heldengeschichte als Märchen
zu entlarven, in eine Dreiecks-Affäre mit Clooney und Krasinski. Eine
Beziehung, die mit ihrem Humor, schnellen und intelligenten Wortwechseln
sowie einer Schlägerei zwischen den Kontrahenten dem
Film eine besondere Note gibt. Erwähnenswert ist auch die Musik

Award-winning German film now in US movie theaters
This new German film, already honored worldwide with 15 awards, is
finally coming to movie theaters in the US. The film tells the moving
story of an elderly woman, played by Monica Bleibtreu, mother of
actor Moritz Bleibtreu, known for his role in Run Lola Run, who, as a
piano teacher in a women’s prison, vehemently propagates the healing
effect of art and music. One day she meets a young, highly talented,
but very violent inmate, played by Hannah Herzsprung, daughter
of German TV actor Berndt Herzsprung, who makes an impressive
film debut in this role.
What develops is an interesting relationship that also brings us to
the past of the piano teacher during World War II. A captivating film
with an impressive soundtrack by Annette Focks.
Director Chris Kraus came across the music of Annette Focks after
searching and listening to test film music from numerous German
composers. She has often composed for German television and has
proven her talent with this music which strongly permeates the film.
The recently founded Autobahn Filmverleih, a subsidiary of the
German Senator Film Verleih GmbH, is distributing the film in the US.

Against the romantic background of the beginning of professional
football in the US in the 1920s, Renée Zellweger, at the side of actor
and director George Clooney, plays into the hearts of movie viewers.
A heartwarming comedy in which John Krasinski, known for his role
in the TV series ‘The Office’, plays a war hero whose heroism is publicized
by an unscrupulous promoter and whose outstanding football
talent constantly gives the film unexpected turns. In this successful
homage to the classical Hollywood comedy half-Swiss Renée
Zellweger receives an assignment to expose Krasinski’s hero story as
fiction, but in the process gets involved in a triangle with Clooney and
Krasinski. A relationship whose humor, quick and intelligent
exchanges as well as a brawl between the two rivals adds a comic
touch to the film. Notable is also the music by Randy Newman, who
appears briefly in the film as a bar pianist.

Auch bei Staedtlers neuster Kampagne stehen die Kleinsten im
Mittelpunkt. Staedtler erfand den “Kid’s Coloring Day”, der fortan
immer am 6. Mai stattfinden soll. Schüler an allen Schulen
Nordamerikas sind aufgerufen, sich zu beteiligen und die drei

nehmenden Schulen kostenlose Malutensilien zur Verfügung und

about their German origins, and those who are proud of their
German origins and market this to their advantage. “Made in
Germany” in many sectors still stands for high quality and a good

This is also how Michael Wiesmann, CEO of Staedtler USA, the

“It has been our experience,” explained Wiesmann, when I visited
him in the American head office in California’s

The company Staedtler which was founded in 1835 by Johann

the Staedtler Foundation, which
owns 100 percent of company
shares. Last year, for
instance, Staedtler
called out a
donating campaign
for the organization
Savethechildren.org, which
supports 77 million underprivileged
children worldwide. Staedtler promised to
match the sum of all donations. So far, the
amount of approximately 700 million dollars was collected
by the organization.
Staedtler’s most recent campaign also focuses on the little
ones. Staedtler invented “Kid’s Coloring Day,” which is always
celebrated on May 6. Students at schools throughout North
America are invited to participate in Kid’s Coloring Day and to
send the best pictures to Staedtler. All participating schools will
receive free Staedtler coloring utensils, and Staedtler is sponsoring
awards for the winners.

Türen schlossen, scheint der Trend sich in

und schweizer Gastronomie in
Südkalifornien zu werden.
Das Old World in Huntington
Beach renoviert derzeit die

bieten. Es gibt auch einige
Umbauten, die den Gästen den

Schmidt’s Brauhaus ist ein Projekt des
Ehepaars Klaus Schmidt und Eugenia
Chung und soll aus Biergarten, Restaurant
und Spezialitätengeschäft bestehen.
Eröffnen soll das Brauhaus in der Nähe
des Staples Center in Downtown-Los
Angeles noch diesen Herbst -
gerade rechtzeitig zum
Oktoberfest. Die Speisekarte
soll jedoch nicht nur typisch
bayerische Gerichte und Biere
anbieten, sondern eine
Auswahl an Gerichten aus
ganz Deutschland. Auch
österreichische und schweizer
Spezialitäten-Wochen
sind geplant.
Bis zu 250 Besucher sollen
in Schmidt`s Brauhaus platz finden. Im
Biergarten gibt es dann die typischen
Biergarten Tische, eine Bühne für Live-
Musik und eine große Leinwand, auf der
man sich beispielsweise Fußballspiele
anschauen kann. Das Restaurant soll
dagegen eine Mahlzeit in einer etwas ruhigeren
Atmosphäre bieten, die Eugenia
„moderne Gemütlichkeit“ nennt.
Schmidt’s Brauhaus will sowohl Corporate
events abhalten, als auch Liebhaber deutscher
Küche anziehen. Klaus Schmidt
betont, dass er als gebürtiger Deutscher
dafür sorgen wird, dass Essen, Bier und
Wein authentisch und in “old country”-
Qualität sind, aber mit Stil serviert werden.

Unterstützung von Chefkoch Ueli Huegli,
dem ehemaligen Besitzer des Restaurants
Matterhorn. Die Rückkehr von Ueli Huegli
ist eine willkommene kulinarische
Bereicherung des Angeleno-Speisezettels,
auf dem momentan kaum noch
deutsches oder schweizer Essen in hervorragender
Qualität zu finden ist. Das
Chalet Edelweiß ist zentral gelegen, in der
Nähe von LAX, in Westchester (8740
Sepulveda Blvd.) - auch in direkter
Nachbarschaft des neuen Turner Centers,
das die Los Angeles Turners derzeit renovieren.
Es gibt bereits erste Gespräche
über eine Zusammenarbeit bei größeren
Festen oder Corporate Events.
„In das existierende Gebäude, wo das
neue Restaurant entsteht, bauen wir ein

Southern California’s restaurant business booming
German cuisine back in trend
After restaurants featuring German
cuisine – which also includes
Austrian and Swiss cuisine – in Los
Angeles, such as the well-established
Black Forest on Wilshire Boulevard and
the Matterhorn in Van Nuys, have closed
their doors in recent years, the trend
appears to have reversed this year. The
year 2008 promises to be the year of the
revival of German, Austrian, and Swiss
restaurants in Southern California.
The Old World in Huntington Beach is
currently renovating its facade to offer a
more uniform image with the shopping
plaza across the street.
At the same time remodeling
is being done to
make the restaurant
more pleasant for
guests. All work should
be completed by June.
At any rate, the Old
World will be offering a
Mother’s Day and Father’s Day brunch. On
the second Sunday in July Old World will
be celebrating German Heritage Day, and
every third Sunday in the month prices for
German sausages or “Dackel” will be
slashed when the Dachshund Races are
held at two in the afternoon.
While the official statement from Alpine
Village only revealed that the old tent in
the beer garden would be taken down and
replaced by a new one that will accommodate
10,000 people, talk in the German
community indicate that the phenomenal
sum of 30 million dollars is being invested
in the renovation of Alpine Village and that
the flea market, regularly held on part of
the grounds, will be moved. The official
opening is appropriately planned for the
Oktoberfest on September 12.
Schmidt’s Brauhaus is the project of the
couple Klaus Schmidt and Eugenia Chung
and will comprise a beer garden, restaurant
and specialty store. The Brauhaus is
scheduled to open near Staples Center in
downtown Los Angeles this fall – just in
time for the Oktoberfest. The menu, however,
will offer not only typically Bavarian
dishes and beers, but also a selection of
dishes from all over Germany. Also being
planned are weeks featuring Austrian and
Swiss specialties.
Up to 250 visitors can be accommodated
in Schmidt’s Brauhaus. The beer garden
will be typical beer garden tables, a stage
for live music and a big screen for watching
soccer games and the like. The restaurant,
on the other hand, will offer meals in a
quieter ambience, which
Eugenia calls “modern
comfort.” Schmidt’s
Brauhaus also wants to
hold corporate events as
well as attract lovers of
German cuisine. Klaus
Schmidt emphasizes
that he, as a native
German, will guarantee that the food, beer
and wine will be authentic and of “old
country” quality, but still served in style.

Los Angeles Turners are presently renovating.
Talks are already being held about
collaborating for larger parties and corporate
events.
“In the existing building where the new
restaurant will be located, we are building
a chalet with a beer garden,” explains
Bachofner. “We want to bring the après ski
ambience of a Swiss chalet to Los
Angeles. Along with a cozy atmosphere,
fresh, fine food served with German draft
beer, Erdinger Weissbier and Bitburger

Aufgewachsen inmitten eines idyllischen
bayrischen Bergdorfes, später
umgezogen an den grauen
Niederrhein, habe ich mir immer eine farbenfrohe
Gegend erträumt, in der ich einmal
leben wollte. Nach einem Abstecher in
die friedliche Schweiz, mit sonnenüberfluteten
Wiesen im Sommer und verschneiten
Berghängen im Winter ging es via Los
Angeles, der Stadt, der immer noch mein
Herz gehört, und dem rauen, heißen Texas,
zu meinem Traumstrand. Seit einigen
Monaten lebe ich am Strand von St.
Petersburg in Florida. Hier gibt es viel
puderigen, weißen Sandstrand, umgeben
von Palmen, die sich dem blauen Himmel
entgegenstrecken.
Am schönsten ist es, wenn man von
Süden, über die Sunshine Skyway Bridge
gen St Petersburg anreist, denn dann liegt
einem der Golf von Mexiko in seiner ganzen
Pracht sprichwörtlich zu Füßen und
die malerischen Gebäude von St.
Petersburg und Bürotürme von Tampa

Schweizerin fand ihr Traumdomizil in St. Petersburg, Florida
kühleren Tagen laden wunderschöne
Strände zum Wandern oder Radfahren ein.
Bei einsamen Strandspaziergängen sehe
ich oft Delphine, die mich mit Luftsprüngen
im Golf ein Stück begleiten.
Die Golfküste an der westlichen Seite
der Florida-Halbinsel hat einen anderen
Charakter als die östliche Atlantikküste.
Die schönen Strände gibt es an beiden
Küsten, aber am Golf sind sie seichter und
haben wärmeres Wasser. Es gibt kaum
oder keine Brandung. Die Küstenlandschaft
ist ein wahres Paradies. Die Hotels
sind zwar zahlreich, aber nicht störend.
Überall gibt es Öffentliche Strände. An den
Stränden entlang und in der Stadt findet
man einzigartige Fischrestaurants,
Restaurants die saftige Hamburger servieren
und Restaurants mit authentischer
griechischer, italienischer und deutscher
Küche.
Fahrradfans kommen auch auf dem 48
Kilometer langen Pinellas Trail, einer ehemaligen
Eisenbahnschienenstrecke, die
zum Wandern, Joggen, Fahrradfahren und
Rollerblading umgebaut wurde, auf ihre
Kosten. Sie erstreckt sich von St.
Petersburg bis nördlich nach Tarpon
Springs.
Mein absoluter Favorit ist Treasure Island,
ein dreieinhalb Meilen langer, ruhiger
Strand. Der Lifestyle hier ist laid-back and
relaxed. Die Häuser erinnern an die 50er
Jahre. Hier wird gegenseitige Akzeptanz,
Toleranz und von Herzen kommende
Freundlichkeit groß geschrieben und lässt
allgegenwärtige Deutsche direkt ins
Staunen kommen.
Beachbars wie Caddy’s on the Beach
und Ka'Tiki haben fast täglich Live Musik.
Dort gehe ich, nach dem ich am Strand den
traumhaften Sonnenuntergang beobachtet
habe, auf einen Drink an die Bar, oder
ganz einfach zum Tanzen. Und wenn gerade
mal kein Partner dabei ist, darf man das
auch alleine. Auf ‚meiner’ Insel fällt das
unter den Begriff Lebensfreude – und
davon haben wir hier jede Menge.

“Finding My Dream Home in St Pete’s”
Having grown up in the middle of an
idyllic Bavarian mountain village,
later moving to the gray Lower
Rhine, I always dreamed of living someday
in a colorful place.
By coincidence I first landed in peaceful
Switzerland, where sunny meadows in
summer, alternated with snowy mountain
slopes in winter, presented the best of
changes in the seasons. But the gray, long,
cold winters were always hard for me, and
even as a child on such days I would imagine
myself on a sunny island under palm
trees.
Via Los Angeles, the city to which my
heart still belongs, and rough, hot Texas, I
have finally landed on my dream island. For
several months I have been living, not on
an island, but on the beach of St.
Petersburg in Florida. Here there are many
powdery, white sandy beaches, surrounded
by palm trees reaching for the blue
skies.
The most beautiful way to approach St.
Petersburg is from the south, over the
Sunshine Skyway Bridge. The Gulf of
Mexico in all its grandeur literally lies at
your feet and the picturesque buildings of
St. Petersburg and office towers from
Tampa gleam in the background.
St. Petersburg, affectionately called St.
Pete by residents, and its beaches are a
paradisiacal tourist region. The sun shines
nearly 360 days a year and even on cooler
days beautiful beaches invite tourists and
residents out for a stroll or to cycle. When
strolling on the beach by myself I often see
dolphins playfully leaping out of the Gulf,
accompanying me for a while.
The Gulf coast on the western side of
Florida’s peninsula has a different character
than the eastern Atlantic coast. There
are beautiful beaches on both coasts, but
on the Gulf they are shallower and have
warmer water. There is little or no surf. The
coastal area is a true paradise. The hotels
are numerous, but unobtrusive. Everywhere
there are public beaches. Along the
beaches and in the city you can find
unique fish restaurants, restaurants serving
juicy hamburgers, and restaurants with
authentic Greek, Italian, and German cuisine.
Trail, a former railroad track line, converted
into a path for hiking, jogging,
cycling, and rollerblading, stretches from
St. Petersburg northwards to Tarpon
Springs. My absolute favorite is Treasure
Island, a three-and-half-mile-long, peaceful
beach. The lifestyle is laid-back and
relaxed. The houses evoke the 1950s. Here
mutual acceptance, tolerance and genuine,
heart-felt friendliness are important
values and never cease to amaze the ubiquitous
Germans. Beach bars such as
Caddy’s on the Beach and Ka’tiki have live
music almost daily. After watching the gorgeous
sunset I go there for a drink at the
bar or simply to dance. And if you don’t
have a partner, you can dance alone. On
‘my’ island this is called joie de vivre – and
here we have plenty of it.

Am 1. August verdunkelt sich die Sonne
Mit der LTU die
totale Sonnenfinsternis
in der Arktis erleben
Am 1. August 2008 wird sich eine
totale Sonnenfinsternis von der
Arktis über Russland und China
hinweg ziehen. Das spektakuläre und
sehr seltene astronomische Phänomen
war über Deutschland zuletzt 1999 zu
beobachten und wird dort erst wieder
am 3. September 2081 zu sehen sein. Mit
einem modernen Airbus A330 der LTU
startet der Flug von Düsseldorf gen
Norden. Nach dem Überfliegen von
Dänemark, Norwegen und Spitzbergen
wird das Flugzeug auf einem sekundengenau
berechneten Flugweg auf die
Bahn der Sonnenfinsternis einschwenken
und mit dem Kernschatten mitfliegen.
Für fast drei Minuten wird das
Flugzeug dabei mitten am Tag von kompletter
Dunkelheit umgeben sein. Die
verdunkelte Sonne wird dabei aus dem
Flugzeug hervorragend zu sehen sein,
da auf einer Flughöhe von über 10.000
Metern keine Wolken die Sicht einschränken.
Zudem wird die Zeitspanne,
die totale Finsternis zu beobachten,
durch die Geschwindigkeit des Flugzeuges
in Richtung des über die Erde rasenden
Kernschattens verlängert und
schafft den Gästen an Bord optimale
Bedingungen, die Finsternis zu beobachten
und filmen.

reserviert, die diesen Flug für Beobachtungen
und Untersuchungen nutzen
