Ländern bei ihrem Kampf gegen AIDS, 

Hungersnöte und Korruption geholfen werden? 

Viele von Ihnen beginnen das neue Jahr 

sicherlich auch mit zahlreichen guten, 

neuen Vorsätzen. Für uns steht das Thema 

Umweltschutz und Hilfe für bedürftige 

Menschen ganz oben auf der Prioritätenliste. 

So starten wir das neue Jahr auch mit 

einem Bericht über Brad Pitts Engagement 

in New Orleans, wo er u.a. von deutschen 

Wissenschaftlern und Architekten unterstützt 

wird. Und im nächsten Heft werden 

wir Ihnen den Christian Children’s Fund 

vorstellen, den ich persönlich seit über 

zehn Jahren durch die Übernahme von 

Patenschaften für Kinder unterstütze. 

Natürlich fehlen auch Glanz und Glamour, 

Kultur, Sport und Wirtschaft nicht in diesem

The New Year has begun, and all 

of us at German World wish you a 

very happy, healthy and peaceful 

New Year. May many of your 

long-cherished dreams come 

true. 

The year 2008 will be very exciting. Who 

will be the new president of the United 

States, and will the situation in Iraq 

improve? How much progress will the 

industrialized world make with regards to 

environmental and climate protection? Will 

we finally be able to better help third world 

countries in their fight against AIDS, 

famine and corruption? 

Many of you will certainly start the New 

Year with a host of new resolutions. For us, 

environmental protection and help for people 

in need are top priorities. With this in 

mind, we start off with an in-depth report 

about Brad Pitt’s engagement in New 

Orleans, where he works closely with 

architects and a scientist from Germany. 

And in our next issue, we will introduce you 

to the work of the Christian Children’s Fund, 

a nonprofit organization that I personally 

have supported for over ten years by sponsoring 

children. 

Despite all these serious topics, you will 

not miss out in this issue on entertaining 

news about glitz and glamour, culture, 

business and sports. We hope you will 

enjoy reading this edition of German World

Liebe Redaktion, 

liebe Leserinnnen und Leser: 

Jedes Jahr hat seine Höhepunkte - das Jahr 2007 

bot ungleich viele. Die Übernahme der europäischen 

Ratspräsidentschaft und des G8-Vorsitzes 

zu Beginn des Jahres bedeutete für Deutschland 

eine außerordentliche Ehre und Verpflichtung. Mit den Ergebnissen 

können wir sehr zufrieden sein. Deutschland hat den Anstoß zu der 

am 25. März unterzeichneten „Berliner Erklärung“ gegeben, die den 

europäischen Integrationsgedanken bekräftigt hat. Die Einigung auf 

den EU-Reformvertrag im Oktober ebenso wie die Festschreibung 

ehrgeiziger Klimaziele geht maßgeblich auf Bemühungen während 

unserer Präsidentschaft zurück. Zugleich hat der deutsche G8- 

Vorsitz das Ziel einer verantwortungsvollen Gestaltung der Globali 

sierung erfolgreich in den Mittelpunkt gestellt. 

Mit Blick auf die deutsch-amerikanische Gemeinschaft sei auch eine 

Initiative der deutschen Botschaft und der deutschen Tourismuszentrale 

erwähnt, die mit der Webseite www.GERMANORIGINality.com ein 

neues Forum für alle geschaffen haben, die sich für deutsch-amerikanische 

Geschichte und Geschichten interessieren. 

Für Sie, liebe Redaktion, liebe Leserinnnen und Leser, brachte das 

Jahr 2007 einen ganz eigenen Höhepunkt mit sich: Im September 

beging German World sein fünf-jähriges Bestehen und konnte ein 

halbes Jahrzehnt zuverlässige und abwechslungsreiche Nachrichten 

rund um Deutschland feiern. Hierzu gratuliere ich German 

World an dieser Stelle noch einmal herzlich! 

Das Ende eines Jahres ist immer auch Gelegenheit zum Ausblick

Dear Readers: 

Every year has its highlights – the year 2007 

offered unusually many. Assuming the EU Council 

and G-8 presidencies at the start of the year was 

an extraordinary honor and obligation for 

Germany, and we can be very satisfied with the results. Germany 

provided the impetus for the Berlin Declaration, which was signed on 

March 25 and reaffirmed the concept of European integration. The 

agreement on the EU Reform Treaty in October and the establishment 

of ambitious goals for climate protection is significantly attributable 

to efforts during our presidency. At the same time, the German G-8 

Presidency succeeded in focusing on the goal of shaping globalization 

in a responsible manner. 

With a view to the German-American community, the German 

Embassy and the German National Tourist Office also launched an initiative 

which, with the website www.GERMANORIGINality.com, has 

established a new forum for anyone interested in German-American 

history and stories. 

For you, dear editors and readers, the year 2007 brought with it a very 

personal highlight: In September, German World marked its fifth 

anniversary and celebrated half a decade of bringing reliable and 

diverse news from around Germany. Let me warmly congratulate 

German World once again on this achievement! 

The year’s end is always an opportunity to look ahead to the coming 

year, both in politics and in our private lives. I therefore wish us all 

plenty of time and leisure with family and good friends this holiday 

season. Let us look to 2008 together with confidence, using the tailwind 

of the past year to master the tasks that lie ahead.

AUS ALLER WELT ACROSS THE MAP

NEUE BOCHUMER SYNAGOGE EINGEWEIHT 

Fast 70 Jahre nach der Zerstörung der Bochumer Synagoge 

durch die Nationalsozialisten hat die Ruhrgebietsstadt wieder 

ein jüdisches Bethaus. Die neue Synagoge in der Bochumer 

Innenstadt wurde mit einem Festakt und Gebeten eingeweiht. 

Die in Form eines Kubus gebaute Synagoge ist für rund sieben 

Millionen Euro von der jüdischen Gemeinde, der Stadt und dem 

Land Nordrhein-Westfalen finanziert worden. 

EU-LÄNDER UNTERZEICHNEN REFORMVERTRAG 

In der portugiesischen Hauptstadt Lissabon ist der neue 

Grundlagenvertrag der Europäischen Union unterzeichnet worden. 

Die 27 EU-Staats- und Regierungschefs unterzeichneten 

den Reformvertrag, der die Gemeinschaft aus der langen Krise 

führen soll, die durch die Ablehnung der Europäischen 

Verfassung durch Frankreich und die Niederlande entstanden 

war. Der portugiesische EU-Ratsvorsitzende, Portugals 

Regierungschef Jose Socrates, sagte, der Vertrag mache 

Europa moderner, effizienter und demokratischer. Ausdrücklich 

würdigte Socrates die Verdienste von Bundeskanzlerin Angela 

Merkel. Unter deutscher Ratspräsidentschaft in der ersten 

Hälfte 2007 war der EU-Reformvertrag wesentlich vorangetrieben 

worden. Unter portugiesischer Präsidentschaft konnten 

dann die mühsamen Verhandlungen mit etlichen 

Ausnahmeregelungen vor allem für Polen und Großbritannien 

beendet werden. Bis zum geplanten Inkrafttreten 2009 muß der 

Vertrag von allen 27 EU-Mitgliedsländern ratifiziert werden. In 

Irland gibt es eine Volksabstimmung. 

UN-KLIMAKONFERENZ VERSTÄNDIGT SICH AUF 

500-MILLIONEN-FONDS 

Die UN-Klimakonferenz auf Bali will einen Fonds einrichten, der 

Entwicklungsländern helfen soll, die Folgen der Erderwärmung 

besser zu bewältigen. In ihn sollen bis 2012 rund 500 Millionen 

Dollar fließen. Umweltorganisationen kritisierten, das Volumen 

des Fonds sei viel zu gering. Bundesumweltminister Sigmar 

Gabriel forderte von den reichen Ländern, sich schon jetzt zur 

Minderung ihrer Treibhausgase bis 2020 um 25 bis 40 Prozent zu 

bekennen. Dies lehnen die USA und andere Länder ab. 


NEW SYNAGOGUE DEDICATED IN BOCHUM 

Nearly 70 years after the destruction of the Bochum synagogue 

by the National Socialists, the city in the Ruhr District once 

again has a Jewish meeting house. The new synagogue located 

in the center of Bochum was dedicated with a ceremonial act 

and prayers. The synagogue, built in the form of a cube, was 

financed at seven million euros by the Jewish community, the 

city, and the land of North Rhine-Westphalia. 

EU COUNTRIES RATIFY REFORM TREATY 

The new European Union treaty was ratified in the Portuguese 

capital Lisbon. The heads of state and government from 27 member 

states signed the Reform Treaty, which aims to lead the community 

out of the long crisis that ensued as a result of the rejection 

of the European Constitution by France and the 

Netherlands. Portuguese EU Council President, Portugal’s 

Prime Minister Jose Socrates, stated that the treaty makes 

Europe more modern, efficient, and democratic. Socrates 

expressly acknowledged the role of German Federal Chancellor 

Angela Merkel. In the first half of 2007 the German EU Council 

Presidency was a significant force behind pushing ahead with 

the EU reform treaty. The Portuguese presidency was then able 

to end the painstaking negotiations with several exemptions to 

the rules, most notably for Poland and Great Britain. By the time 

it is scheduled to go into effect in 2009, the treaty must be ratified 

by all 27 EU member states. Ireland will hold a referendum. 

UN CLIMATE CONFERENCE AGREES ON 

500 MILLION DOLLAR FUND 

The UN Climate Conference in Bali will set up a fund to help 

developing countries cope better with the consequences of 

global warming. By 2012 approximately 500 million dollars is to 

flow into the fund. Environmental organizations, however, criticize 

that the fund is much too small. German Environmental 

Minister Sigmar Gabriel called on rich countries to commit 

themselves now to reducing their greenhouse emissions by 25 

percent to 40 percent by 2020. This plea has been rejected by the 

US and other countries.


REPORTER OHNE GRENZEN: 

WELTWEIT 130 JOURNALISTEN INHAFTIERT 

Weltweit sitzen zurzeit 130 Journalisten wegen ihrer Recherchen 

und Berichte in Haft. Es gebe 30 Regierungen, die unbequeme 

Journalisten wegsperren ließen, erklärte die Organisation 

„Reporter ohne Grenzen“ in Berlin. Für die Machthaber 

dieser Länder sei das Gefängnis die einzige Antwort auf öffentliche 

Kritik durch die Medien. „Reporter ohne Grenzen“ veröffentlichte 

die Zahlen zum „Tag der Menschenrechte“. 

Besonders schlimm sei die Lage in Eritrea. Von 15 inhaftierten 

Journalisten seien wegen der desolaten Zustände in den 

Gefängnissen vermutlich vier gestorben. 

AUSWÄRTIGES AMT BESTÄTIGT 

VISA-SCHIEBEREIEN IN DEUTSCHEN BOTSCHAFTEN 

In zwei deutschen Botschaften sind neue Schiebereien mit gefälschten 

Visa-Anträgen aufgedeckt worden. Das Auswärtige 

Amt in Berlin bestätigte einen entsprechenden Bericht des Nachrichtenmagazins 

‘Der Spiegel’. Danach erhielten in den Botschaften 

in Moskau und Kairo Antragsteller mit gefälschten Papieren 

eine Einreiseerlaubnis für die Bundesrepublik. Die Rede ist von 

mehr als 1.200 Fällen. Mehrere Mitarbeiter der Botschaften wurden 

entlassen. Laut ‘Spiegel’ werden derzeit in Kairo rund 50.000 

Visa-Anträge noch einmal überprüft. - Vor zwei Jahren hatte ein 

Untersuchungsausschuss des Bundestages umfangreiche Betrügereien 

vor allem in osteuropäischen Botschaften festgestellt. 

INNENMINISTER GEHEN GEGEN SCIENTOLOGY UND 

NPD-NAHE STIFTUNGEN VOR 

Die Innenminister des Bundes und der Länder haben die 

Scientology-Organisation als verfassungswidrig eingestuft und 

die Verfassungsschutzbehörden damit beauftragt, Informationen 

und Material für ein Ermittlungsverfahren zu sammeln. Die Ziele 

der Scientology seien nicht mit dem Grundgesetz vereinbar, sagte 

der Vorsitzende der Innenministerkonferenz, Berlins Innensenator 

Ehrhart Körting nach einer Konferenz der Ressortchefs in Berlin. 

Geprüft werden sollen auch Schritte, um rechtsradikalen 

Vereinen und NPD- nahen Stiftungen die Finanzierung zu 

erschweren. Unter anderem soll ihnen die Gemeinnützigkeit aberkannt 

werden, wenn sie verfassungsfeindliche Ziele verfolgen.

REPORTERS WITHOUT BORDERS: 

130 JOURNALISTS DETAINED WORLDWIDE 

Worldwide 130 journalists are being held in prison in retaliation 

for their research and reporting. There are 30 governments that 

have inconvenient journalists locked away, declared the organization 

“Reporters Without Borders” in Berlin. For rulers of 

these countries prison is the only response to open criticism by 

the media. “Reporters without Borders” published the figures 

for “Human Rights Day” to be celebrated. The situation is particularly 

dire in Eritrea. Four of the 15 detained journalists have 

allegedly died as a result of the desolate conditions in the prisons. 

GERMAN FOREIGN OFFICE CONFIRMS 

VISA RACKETS IN GERMAN EMBASSIES 

In two German embassies new rackets dealing with forged visa 

applications have been uncovered. The Foreign Office in Berlin 

confirmed a report published in the news magazine “Der 

Spiegel.” According to the report, applicants with forged papers 

received visas for the Federal Republic of Germany in the 

Moscow and Cairo embassies. More than 1,200 cases were 

involved. Several embassy workers have been fired. According 

to “Der Spiegel,” approximately 50,000 visa applications in Cairo 

are currently being reexamined. Two years ago a Bundestag 

fact-finding committee had discovered a large number of forgeries, 

primarily in East European embassies. 

INTERIOR MINISTERS PROCEED AGAINST SCIENTOLOGY 

AND FOUNDATIONS WITH NPD TIES 

The Interior Ministers of the German Federation and the Länder 

have classified the Scientology organization as unconstitutional 

and commissioned the Federal Office for the Protection of the 

Constitution to collect information and material for preliminary 

proceedings. The aims of Scientology are incompatible with the 

German Constitution, reported the chairman of the Conference of 

Interior Ministers, Berlin’s Interior Senator Ehrhart Körting, after a 

conference of the department heads in Berlin. Also under review 

are steps to make the financing of right-wing extremist organizations 

and foundations with NPD ties more difficult. One measure 

being considered is to deprive organizations of their non profit 

status if they pursue goals hostile to the constitution. 



GERMANWATCH: LOB FÜR DEUTSCHLAND BEIM KLIMASCHUTZ 

Gute Noten für Deutschland beim Klimaschutz: In einer Studie, 

die den Treibhausgas-Ausstoß und die Klimaschutzpolitik 

bewertet, hat die Bundesrepublik sich in diesem Jahr fast an die 

Spitze vorgearbeitet. Nur Schweden liegt dank geringer Pro- 

Kopf- Emissionen besser. Das geht aus dem Klimaschutzindex 

hervor, den die Umweltorganisation Germanwatch bei der 

Weltklimakonferenz auf Bali vorstellte. Deutschland bleibt allerdings 

weltweit der sechstgrößte Erzeuger von Kohlendioxid. 

Insgesamt untersuchte die Organisation 56 Länder, die zusammen 

90 Prozent der Treibhausgase produzieren. Die schlimmsten 

Klimasünder waren Saudi-Arabien, die USA und 

Australien. Die Experten konnten dort keine nennenswerten 

Anstrengungen zum Klimaschutz feststellen. 

US-AFFÄRE UM VERNICHTETE CIA-VIDEOS 

ZIEHT WEITE KREISE 

Mit dem jüngsten CIA-Skandal in den USA werden sich auch die 

zuständigen Ausschüsse des Kongresses befassen. Der 

Vorsitzende des Geheimdienstausschusses im Repräsentantenhaus, 

der demokratische Politiker Silvestre Reyes, kündigte eine 

eigene Untersuchung an. Auch im Senat wurden entsprechende 

Schritte eingeleitet. Man könne der Regierung nicht trauen und 

diese könne sich nicht selbst kontrollieren, sagte Reyes. Das 

Weiße Haus hat jegliche Verwicklung in die Affäre um zerstörte 

CIA-Videomitschnitte von Verhören mutmaßlicher El-Kaida- 

Terroristen bestritten. Präsident George W. Bush sei erst am 

Donnerstag von CIA-Direktor Michael Hayden über die 

Vernichtung der Videos informiert worden, erklärte eine 

Sprecherin. Die Aufzeichnungen zeigten Vernehmungen eines 

Vertrauten von El-Kaida-Chef Osama bin Laden sowie eines weiteren 

ranghohen Mitglieds des Terrornetzes. 


GERMANWATCH: 

PRAISE FOR GERMANY IN CLIMATE PROTECTION 

Germany has received good marks in the area of climate protection. 

In a study assessing greenhouse emissions and climate 

protection policies, the Federal Republic of Germany moved 

closer to the top this year. Only Sweden, due to less pro-capita 

emissions, ranks higher. These results came from the climate 

protection index presented by the environmental organization 

Germanwatch at the World Climate Conference in Bali. But 

Germany remains the world’s sixth largest producer of carbon 

dioxide. Altogether the organization studied 56 countries, which 

altogether produce 90 percent of greenhouse emissions. The 

worst climate sinners were Saudi Arabia, the US, and Australia. 

Experts could not ascertain any notable efforts made in these 

countries to improve climate protection. 

US AFFAIR OVER DESTROYED CIA VIDEOS 

SPREADS TO OTHER SPHERES 

The competent congressional committees will also be taking a 

look at the latest CIA scandal in the US. The chairman of the 

Secret Service Committee in the House of Representatives, 

Democrat Silvestre Reyes, announced it would be conducting 

its own investigation. The Senate has also initiated steps toward 

setting up an investigation. The government cannot be trusted 

and should not be allowed to investigate itself, stated Reyes. The 

White House has denied any involvement in the affair over the 

destroyed CIA videotaping of interrogations of alleged Al-Qaeda

WIEDERAUFBAU IN NEW ORLEANS: AUF DIE GRÜNE TOUR 

„MAKE IT RIGHT!“ UND DAS „PINK PROJECT“ VON BRAD PITT 

Schauspieler und Aktivist Brad Pitt und 14 internationale Architekturbüros, 

darunter die vielfach prämierten Architekten der Firma GRAFT, 

haben sich einer gewaltigen Aufgabe, nämlich der Mithilfe am 

Wiederaufbau von New Orleans, verschrieben. Die Stadt ist noch 

immer von den Schäden des Hurrikans „Katrina“ vom August 2005 

gezeichnet und die Zerstörung ist enorm. 

In einem ersten Schritt begannen nun lokale 

Organisationen zusammen mit den Architekturbüros, 

zahlreichen Firmen und Freiwilligen mit dem 

Bau von 150 umweltfreundlich konzipierten 

Häusern in dem am schwersten betroffenen 

Stadtteil von New Orleans, dem 14 Blocks umspannenden 

„Lower Ninth Ward“. Das Projekt ist ein 

Hoffnungsstrahl für die vielen Familien, die durch 

die schlimmste Naturkatastrophe in der Geschichte 

der USA ihr Hab und Gut verloren haben. 

Schockiert über die Verwüstung und dem Mangel 

an Unterstützung, bot Pitt seine Hilfe an und machte 

New Orleans schon bald zu seinem Zweit-Wohnsitz. 

Er rief das „Make It Right“ Projekt ins Leben und 

zusammen mit der Umweltorganisation „Global 

Green“ veranstaltete er einen Wettbewerb unter 

Architekten mit dem Ziel, neue Ideen für einen 

umweltfreundlichen Wiederaufbau zusammenzutragen. 

Die vier Hauptgrundlagen der Designs bestehen 

aus Sicherheit, Erschwinglichkeit, Umweltverträglichkeit 

und hochwertiger Bauweise. 

Die von Katrina zerstörten Häuser werden nicht einfach 

nur ersetzt, sondern noch zusätzlich mit einem umweltverträglichen 

Konzept versehen, welches Energiekosten niedrig hält und eine 

geringe Belastung für die Umwelt darstellt. Die neue Gemeinde soll ein 

Vorbild an Umweltfreundlichkeit und Lebensqualität werden, dass 

sowohl andere Stadtteile von New Orleans als auch Kommunen auf 

der ganzen Welt inspirieren kann.

haben Menschen aus aller Welt und unterschiedlichsten Gesellschaftsschichten 

ihre Bereitwilligkeit gezeigt, unseren Planeten grüner zu gestalten. Viele kluge 

Köpfe haben mit ihren Ideen Interesse und Hoffnung geweckt und einige dieser 

Projekte möchten wir hier nun vorstellen:

Herzstück von New Orleans. In mehreren Treffen erfuhr Pitt von den 

Bewohnern dieses Viertels, mit welchen Problemen sie vor und nach 

dem Sturm zu kämpfen hatten. Neben der Sorge steigender 

Energiekosten, die eine große Belastung für die gering verdienenden 

Haushalte darstellt, ist auch die Angst vor weiteren Folgen des 

Klimawandels groß. Das Ziel besteht darin, eine sichere und geschützte 

Wohngemeinde zu erstellen, die nicht nur Wert auf hohe Design 

Qualität legt sondern auch die kulturelle Gemeinsamkeit miteinbezieht. 

Es ist zu hoffen, dass die ersten bedürftigen Einwohner bereits im 

Spätsommer dieses Jahres in diesen Stadtteil zurückkehren können, 

um ihre neuen Häuser zu beziehen.

Der Architekt und Designer William McDonough und der deutsche 

Chemiker und Verfahrenstechniker Prof. Dr. Michael Braungart sind 

weltweit führend auf dem Gebiet umweltfreundlicher Bauweise. In 

ihrer gemeinsamen Firma “Mc Donough Braungart Design Chemistry” 

verfolgen sie die so genannte „Cradle to Cradle“ Philosophie, die auf 

der Annahme beruht, dass jedes Produkt und auch jedes Abfallprodukt 

eines Herstellungsprozesses wieder nutzbringend verwendet werden 

sollte. Das Ziel ist eine vielseitige, sichere und gesunde Umwelt zu 

schaffen, in der Menschen wirtschaftlich, gerecht und „elegant“ leben

REBUILDING NEW ORLEANS THE ECO-WAY 

BRAD PITT’S MAKE IT RIGHT AND THE PINK PROJECT

Actor/activist Brad Pitt, 14 international architect firms, among them 

the award-winning German architect firm GRAFT, have taken on the 

daunting task of rebuilding New Orleans after its devastation by 

Hurricane Katrina in August 2005. In a first step, local communities, 

national and international architect firms together with numerous 

companies and volunteers began the construction of 150 eco-friendly 

homes in the Lower Ninth Ward, an area spanning 14 blocks that was 

hit the hardest by the storm. The project is a ray of hope for the many 

families who lost everything, including their homes, during the worst 

natural disaster in American history. 

Shocked by the devastation and the lack of aid, Pitt vowed to help 

and soon became a part-time resident of New Orleans. He started the 

“Make It Right” project and worked with “Global Green” to sponsor an 

architecture competition aimed at generating ideas about how to 

rebuild sustainably. The four main guiding principles for designs are 

safety, affordability, sustainability, and high-quality design. 

In addition to replacing housing destroyed by Katrina, the sustainable 

design incorporated into the homes will help ease the financial 

burden of high-energy costs and reduce their environmental impact. 

The new community should serve as a replicable model for further 

rebuilding, but also as an inspiration to other communities around the 

world. 

With its rich cultural community, the Lower Ninth Ward symbolizes 

the heart and soul of New Orleans. In a series of meetings, Lower Ninth 

Ward residents told Pitt about the challenges their community faced, 

both before and after the storm. The rising cost of energy placed a 

strain on the low-income households of the neighborhood, and residents 

expressed concern about worsening environmental conditions, 

mainly caused by climate change. The mission is to build a neighborhood 

comprised of safe and healthy homes with an emphasis on the 

high-quality of design while preserving the spirit of the community’s 

culture. The goal is to accomplish this quickly, so that the first residents 

can begin returning to their homes by the end of summer 2008.

people around the world and from all walks of life have shown in countless 

ways their willingness to make our world a greener place. Many creative

Stoffhaus und bekam die Idee, die Farbe pink als Hoffnungsträger für 

den Wiederaufbau zu nutzen. Zusammen mit GRAFT wurde ein Konzept 

entwickelt, Film und Architektur zu einer Installation zu verschmelzen, 

die globale Aufmerksamkeit auf ein brennendes lokales Problem lenken 

würde. Nur mit Hilfe von Spenden können diese pinkfarbenen 

„Platzhalter-Zelte“, deren Ansicht stets an den notwendigen Wiederaufbau 

mahnen, schließlich durch 

150 neue, echte Wohnhäuser ersetzt 

werden.

Für die „Pink Project“ Installation

Ausstellungen, Bühnen- und

USA, ist er bekannt für seine kühnen 

Entwürfe, mit denen er Welten von 

Fantasy und Science Fiction kreiert. 

Der Hurrikan „Katrina“ war leider keine Science Fiction, aber wir können 

versuchen, die Fantasie, welche New Orleans zu einer der einzigartigsten 

Städte dieser Welt gemacht hatte, wieder aufleben zu lassen 

und die Stadt wieder zu einem lebenswerten Ort zu machen.

embrace intelligent, aesthetic, and eco-effective design and seek to 

optimize products within the cradle- to-cradle framework. 

GRAFT is an innovative German architect firm that Pitt has collaborated 

with on projects around the world. Founders Lars Krückeberg, 

Wolfram Putz, and Thomas Willemeit first met as students at the 

University of Braunschweig in Germany where they formed a jazz 

choir, which started their successful collaboration. In 1998 they established 

GRAFT. Meanwhile the company has offices in Berlin, Los 

Angeles and Beijing, and is a full-service architectural firm with a collective 

professional experience that encompasses a wide array of 

building types. 

THE PINK PROJECT - VIRTUAL CITY OF HOPE 

While on a movie set in New Orleans, Brad Pitt identified the visual 

potency of assembling pink houses as a metaphor. Together with 

GRAFT, the idea was born to merge film and architecture into an installation 

that would focus immediate global attention onto a pervasive 

local issue. Only through monetary donations can these pink placeholders 

be reassembled, registering the effects of a collective consciousness, 

and ultimately enabling the construction of 150 real

Stefan Beese from Flensburg, 

Germany, and founder of beesignproduction 

design joined forces with

to designing shows, fairs, exhibitions 

and sets for stage and screen in 

Germany and the US, his bold, contemporary 

style has inspired many to 

commission him to create many 

worlds of science fiction and fantasy. 

Unfortunately, Hurricane Katrina was not fiction, but we can try to 

revive the fantasy that made New Orleans one of the most unique cities 

in the world. Let’s roll up our sleeves and “Let the Good Times Roll“ 

once again.

OUTRAGE OVER CALIFORNIA WAIVER 

DENIAL BY ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION 

AGENCY (EPA) 

A powerful Congressional committee has launched 

an investigation into the US Environmental 

Protection Agency’s denial of California’s request to 

impose limits on greenhouse gas emissions from 

motor vehicles. This is the first time a waiver 

request has been denied under the federal Clean Air 

Act, and it is a major blow to California and the 16 

states that have adopted or are in the process of 

adopting California’s emissions standards. The outrageous 

decision by the EPA has prompted 

California Attorney General Ed Brown, Jr. and 

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to file a lawsuit.

Markt. Vor zehn Jahren galt der gebürtige 

Kölner Uwe Krupp (42) noch als Exot, wenn er in der 

amerikanischen Eliteliga NHL (National Hockey League) mit 

seinem Schläger über das glatte Geläuf fegte. Seitdem ist die 

Zahl der deutschen Profis stetig gestiegen. In der aktuellen 

Saison erreichte sie nun Rekordniveau. Derzeit stehen zehn 

deutsche Spieler in den 30 NHL-Klubs unter Vertrag. 

„Mit dem relativ wenigen Nachwuchs, den wir in Deutschland 

haben, wurde und wird eben gut gearbeitet“, hat Krupp, der heute die 

deutsche Nationalmannschaft coacht, eine einfache Erklärung für die 

gestiegene Nachfrage nach Puckjägern aus seinem Heimatland. Sie 

allesamt träumen davon, einmal den Stanley Cup – die prestigeträchtigste 

Eishockey-Trophäe der Welt - zu gewinnen. Uwe Krupp ist das bislang

becoming an increasingly coveted 

import hit in the North American market. 

Ten years ago Cologne native Uwe 

Krupp (42) was regarded as an exotic when he swept 

his stick across the smooth ice in the American elite 

league NHL. Since then the number of German pros in 

the American ice hockey world has risen steadily. This 

season they have reached a record level. There are 

currently ten German players under contract in the 30 

NHL clubs. 

“The relatively small number of younger players that we 

have in Germany have been and are being trained very well,” offered 

Krupp, now coach of the German national ice hockey team, as a simple 

explanation for the rising demand for hockey players from his country. 

They all dream of winning the Stanley Cup – the world’s most prestigious 

ice hockey trophy. So far Uwe Krupp is the only one to have succeeded 

with the Colorado Avalanches in 1996. Back then the gigantic 

defender scored the clinching 1:0 victory goal in the third overtime in 

the decisive fourth playoff game. 

Marco Sturm (29) is also part of the starting lineup for the Boston 

Bruins. The native Dingolfinger is the best German scorer with 190 

goals. 

No less experienced is Jochen Hecht (30) of Mannheim, one of whose 

games with the Buffalo Sabres will never be forgotten. As captain, the 

forward led his team onto ice in the historical open-air duel against the

in the Buffalo football stadium in a blizzard and freezing temperatures 

– still the record attendance for a championship game in the 90-year

Christian Ehrhoff (defense/25) as well as goaltenders Kazakh native

Für Ottmar Hitzfeld (58) begann am 1. Januar die Abschiedstournee 

beim FC Bayern München. Nach insgesamt acht Jahren im Dienst des 

deutschen Fußball-Rekordmeister wird der Erfolgscoach, der seine 

zweite Amtszeit in München als Nachfolger von Felix Magath am 

1. Februar 2007 angetreten hatte, die Bayern am Saisonende voraussichtlich 

in Richtung Schweiz verlassen. Dort soll er Nationaltrainer 

werden. Vor den möglichen Hitzfeld-Nachfolgern Marco van Basten

Menschen gesehen. Neben einer Millionenbörse bekam 

sie von ihrem Promotor Klaus-Peter Kohl für die 13-jährige 

Zusammenarbeit noch ein wunderschönes Schmuckstück. 

Der auffällige Ring ist mit 56 Brillanten besetzt, die 

ihre Kämpfe symbolisieren sollen, und trägt in der Mitte 

einen großen Rhodolithen, gehalten von zwei Miniatur- 

Boxhandschuhen aus Weißgold.

Biathlon-Königin Magdalena Neuner, Turn-Ass Fabian Hambüchen 

und die Handball-Weltmeister um Bundestrainer Heiner Brand sind zu 

den deutschen „Sportler des Jahres“ 2007 gekürt worden. Die Wahl 

unter mehr als 1300 Sportjournalisten wurde zum 61. Mal durchgeführt. 

Die dreimalige Weltmeisterin Magdalena Neuner hatte sich 3410 

Stimmen vor Diskuswurf-Weltmeisterin Franka Dietzsch (2373) und 

Fußball-Weltmeisterin Nadine Angerer (1548) durchgesetzt. Reck- 

Weltmeister Fabian Hambüchen siegte mit 4575 Stimmen vor 

Tischtennis-Europameister Timo Boll (1614) und Basketballstar Dirk 

Nowitzki (1530). Bei den Mannschaften triumphierten die Handballer 

mit 4677 Stimmen vor der dem Fußball-Nationalteam der Frauen (4118) 

und dem weltbesten Handballverein THW Kiel (1413).

Ottmar Hitzfeld (58) began his farewell tour with FC Bayern Munich on 

January 1. After a total of eight years’ service for the German soccer 

record holders, the successful coach, who returned for a second spell 

as coach in Munich as the successor of Felix Magath on February 1, 

2007, is planning to leave the FC Bayern at the end of the season to 

head back to Switzerland. There he is expected to become national 

coach. Competing against Marco van Basten and Frank Rijkaard as 

Hitzfeld-successor, Juergen Klinsmann won the race. With a generous 

annual salary of 8 million euros, he will become the best-paid German 

soccer trainer of all times. 

REGINA HAMLICH: BOXING QUEEN SAYS GOODBYE 

The most successful female boxer in the world has hung 

up her gloves. After her 45th victory in a world championship 

match since 1995 flyweight boxer Regina Halmich 

is saying goodbye to boxing. The 31-year-old Karlsruhe 

native turned women’s boxing in Germany into a TV sport 

with record viewer ratings. Nearly ten million people saw 

her 56th and final fight on German television (ZDF). Along 

with a million-dollar purse she received a beautiful piece 

of jewelry from her promoter Klaus-Peter Kohl to commemorate 

their 13-year collaboration. The flashy ring 

boasts 56 gems to symbolize her fights, with a large 

rhodolite in the center held by two miniature boxing 

gloves of white gold.

THE NEW 

COOL: 

Ingo Pohlmann ist der Shootingstar der Deutschen Musikszene, man 

vergleicht ihn mit Ben Harper oder Jack Johnson. Ich habe ihn in Köln 

getroffen und mit ihm über den neuen Trend Deutsch singender Rocker 

gesprochen, über seine Pionierrolle dabei und über seine musikalische 

Prägung durch die allgegenwärtigen Musikimporte aus Amerika. 

GW: Haben Sie Ihre Stücke immer auf Deutsch geschrieben? 

IP: Nein. Mit 16 und bis ich ungefähr 25 war, habe ich immer nur auf 

Englisch geschrieben. Fast alle meine Idole waren Amerikaner. Die 

Deutsche Musikszene war damals natürlich ganz stark von Amerika 

beeinflusst. Und für Einen selbst ist dieses Alter ja auch die Zeit der 

Identitätsfindung. Also habe ich auf Englisch 

geschrieben, wie viele Musiker hier. Aber irgendwann 

habe ich mich gefragt, was ich eigentlich 

sagen will. Englisch ist nicht meine Muttersprache. 

Ich habe damals auch Gedichte geschrieben und 

dabei gemerkt, dass man einfach tiefer reinkommt, 

wenn man die eigene Sprache benutzt. 

GW: Gab es bei diesem Umschwung auch 

Deutsche Vorbilder? 

IP: Ja, „Selig“ zum Beispiel. Das ist eine Band, die 

von „The Black Crowes“ inspiriert war. Ihre deutschen 

Texte haben einfach Spaß gemacht. Es ist 

nicht einfach, Texte in dieser Sprache zu schreiben. 

Da gibt es die sogenannte deutsche „Schlagermusik“, 

in denen es nur um Glück, Liebe und 

Sonnenschein geht. In der Nachkriegszeit wollten 

die Leute damit ihre Vergangenheit vergessen. Aber in den letzten fünf 

oder sieben Jahren gibt es eine andere Art von Bewusstsein für das 

Land, und seitdem schreibt man auch mehr deutsche Texte. 

GW: Kann denn jeder, der Deutsch spricht, Ihre Musik verstehen? 

IP: Ich hoffe es, denn das wird mir immer wichtiger. Früher habe ich sehr 

kryptische Songs geschrieben, poetisch und verschlüsselt. Das waren 

wohl meine „dunklen“ Jahre (lacht). Damals war ich nicht gerade leicht 

zu verstehen. 

Nach dem Interview spielte Ingo Pohlmann in einem ausverkauften Club 

– nicht der erste auf seiner Tournee. Mit seiner energiegeladenen Show, 

seinen frischen Melodien, die das Publikum oft zum Mitsingen animieren, 

und seinem charmanten Lächeln könnte Pohlmann in jeder Sprache 

erfolgreich sein.

ROCKT AUF DEUTSCH / ROCKS IN GERMAN 

On a recent trip to Cologne, I sat down with rising German star Ingo 

Pohlmann. He has been compared to Ben Harper and Jack Johnson, 

so I wanted to know why he’s become a pioneer in a surprisingly recent 

trend of rockers singing in German, and how a history of imported 

American music has influenced him. 

GW: Have you always written in German? 

IP: No. From age 16 to 25, I wrote in English, because most of my idols 

were American. At that time, of course, we made music here in 

Germany that was inspired by American music. Also, at that age, you 

try to find an identity, so I wrote in English like many people in 

Germany…. But then I asked myself what I really 

wanted to say. It’s not my mother language. First I 

wrote songs in English, even some poems, and 

then I just felt that it goes deeper when you sing in 

your own language. 

GW: Did you have any German music heroes who 

inspired you when started writing in German? 

IP: Selig, a German band, who were somewhat 

inspired by The Black Crowes. They wrote in 

German, and it was fun. It’s not easy to write in 

German…. We have “Schlager” music, which 

after the war helped people forget. And it’s always 

‘happy,’ and ‘sunshine’ and ‘love’… but in the last 

five to seven years, we have come back to a new 

consciousness here in Germany, and as a result 

people are writing more in German. 

GW: Do you think your music is easily understood by anyone who 

speaks German? 

IP: More and more, it’s important now for me that everyone understand 

what I am saying. At first I wrote more cryptic songs, where everything 

was more poetic, and I think that came across as my “dark” years 

(laughing). During this time I wasn’t easy to understand. 

After the interview, Ingo performed to a sold-out club, one of many on 

his tour. With a high-energy show, often punctuated with the audience 

singing his choruses back to him, Ingo’s charming smile and upbeat 

melodies would be a hit in any language.

AUS DEUTSCHLAND, VIA TOKIO… 

Die musikalischen Senkrechtstarter aus Deutschland, Tokio Hotel, 

wollen im neuen Jahr auch amerikanische Hörer begeistern. Nach 

ausverkauften Stadien auf der Europatour nehmen die jungen Punk- 

Rocker aus dem ostdeutschen Magdeburg die größten Hits ihrer 

ersten beiden Alben bei Interscope Records neu auf – in englischer 

Sprache. Das Album erscheint Anfang 2008, die erste Single, 

“Scream America” ist schon seit Dezember als limitierte Auflage 

erhältlich. 

KÜNSTLERIN MIT POTENTIAL… 

Sie singt R&B, ist in Deutschland geboren und aufgewachsen: 

Newcomer-Sängerin Ayo war 2007 als Vor-Act von „Babyface“ auf 

US-Tour. Ihrem Debütalbum „Joyful“ hört man Ayos vielseitige ethnische 

und musikalische Biographie an: Die Straßen von New York 

City und die Pariser Clubs, in denen Ayo erste Erfolge feierte ebenso 

wie den nigerianischen Dialekt ihres Vaters. Auf PBS wird Ayo demnächst 

mit dem Special „Ayo Live in Monte Carlo“ zu sehen sein. 

STUTTGART FÜHLT SICH WICKED… 

„Wicked“ hat bereits mehrere „Tony Awards“ gewonnen. Jetzt gibt 

es die Sensation des internationalen Musicals auch auf Deutsch. 

„Wicked: Die Hexen von Oz“ feierte am 15. November im Stuttgarter 

Paladium-Theater seine Premiere und läuft seitdem nonstop. Wer 

neugierig ist auf die moderne Geschichte der Hexen aus dem 

„Zauberer von Oz“, kann jetzt schon Karten für die Vorstellungen bis 

Juni 2008 kaufen. Die Vorlage, „Der Zauberer von Oz“, stammt vom 

amerikanischen Autor Lyman Frank Baum, dessen Familie deutsche 

Wurzeln hat. 

STIMMIG: DEUTSCHE TECHNIK FÜR EINEN 

AMERIKANISCHEN KLASSIKER… 

An der legendären Gitarre „Les Paul“ der Gibson Guitar Corporation 

aus Nashville arbeiten nun auch Deutsche Experten mit. Gibson hat 

sich mit der Deutschen Robotik-Firma Tronical zusammengetan und 

eine High-Tech-Gitarre in limitierter Auflage entwickelt. Die „Les 

Paul Silverburst“ stimmt sich selbst und braucht dafür nur zwei 

Sekunden. Seit dem 7. Dezember gibt es das Instrument weltweit zu 

kaufen, für etwa $ 2500 zuzüglich $ 900 für das selbststimmende Extra 

„PowerTune“. Das kann aber auch separat gekauft und laut 

Hersteller Tronical in vielen E-Gitarren installiert werden.

FROM GERMANY, VIA TOKIO… 

In a rather unique move, breakout German band, Tokio Hotel, will be 

invading the US in the new year. After sell-out arena tours in Europe, 

Interscope Records decided to have these young punk rockers rerecord 

the greatest hits from their first two albums in English. They 

are scheduled for release in the US in early 2008. Their first single, a 

limited edition EP called “Scream America,” was released in 

December. 

ARTIST TO WATCH… 

Born and raised in Germany, newly signed R&B singer Ayo, opened 

for Babyface on his US tour in 2007. Her debut album, “Joyful,” 

invokes her ethnically rich personal and musical history, from the 

streets of New York City to Parisian clubs, where she first found success, 

to the Nigerian pidgin language of her father. Also look for Ayo 

Live in Monte Carlo to air on PBS. 

STUTTGART IS FEELING WICKED… 

The international musical sensation and multiple Tony winner, 

Wicked, has been translated into German. Wicked: Die Hexen von Oz 

premiered November 15 in Stuttgart at the Paladium Theater, where 

it is playing an open-ended run. Tickets are currently available 

through June 2008 for this modern story of the witches from “The 

Wonderful Wizard of Oz” by L. Frank Baum, who himself was from a 

German-American family. 

GERMAN TECHNOLOGY GIVES AN AMERICAN 

CLASSIC A NEW TUNE… 

Gibson Guitar Corp, based in Nashville, has partnered with German 

robotics developer, Tronical GmbH, to create a technologically 

advanced Limited Edition Les Paul Silverburst guitar that tunes itself 

in about 2 seconds. The guitars went on sale globally on December 

7 for about $2500, plus an additional $900 for the self-tuning option. 

The feature, known as PowerTune, can also be bought separately 

from Tronical, who says it can be installed in several electric guitar 

models.

SMART KOMMT NACH AMERIKA 

So smart wie sein Name schon sagt, ist der Wagen selbst allemal. Der 

Wagen ist ein Computer mit Fahrgastzelle und erfreut sich seit einigen 

Jahren in deutschen Städten wachsender Beliebtheit. Der kleine 

Smart trinkt zwar keine Milch mehr, gibt sich aber mit 33 mpg in der 

Stadt und 40 mpg-auf dem Highway zufrieden und liefert dafür mit seinem 

Einliter-Motor und drei Zylindern eine Höchstgeschwindigkeit, die 

mit rund 90 Meilen pro Stunde jederzeit einen Strafzettel für Speeding 

wert ist. 

Der Smart hatte sich vor etwa zwei Jahren schon einmal auf den 

Weg in die USA gemacht und German-World berichtete auch darüber, 

aber irgendwie ging das Geschäft nicht so recht. Der Importeur seinerzeit 

kam auch nicht mit einem Smart zum Interview sondern in einem 

911er Porsche. Für uns war das zwar irgendwie verständlich, aber 

gleichzeitig war es aber keine überzeugende Werbung für den kleinen 

Smart, der mit zwei Meter 70 (8,8 Fuß) Länge recht kurz und mit je 

einem Meter 55 (5,1 Fuß) dazu noch so breit wie hoch ist. 

In vielen Ländern – besonders in den überfüllten Städten - sind diese 

Maße absolute Traummaße. Wo es erlaubt ist, passen zwei Smarts auf 

einen einzigen Parkplatz. In den USA ist es das allerdings nicht. Smart 

gehört zu Mercedes und mittlerweile wurden 750.000 der sogenannten 

„fortwo“ in 36 Ländern verkauft. Die nackte Version beginnt bei 11.590 

Dollar und das Cabrio schlägt mit 16.590 Dollar zu Buche. Das 

Autochen soll sich Anfang 2008 bei den Händlern befinden und für 99 

Dollar kann man sich schon mal einen reservieren lassen.

SMART COMES TO AMERICA 

As smart as the name already claims it is, the Smart speaks for itself. 

The car is a computer with a passenger cell and for years has been 

enjoying a growing popularity in German cities. The small Smart has 

been weaned off milk, but is content with 33 mpg in the city and 40 mpg 

on the highway, and its one-liter engine and three cylinders delivers a 

top speed of 90 miles an hour, which would warrant a speeding ticket 

at any time or place. 

The Smart headed to the US around two years ago, and German 

World wrote about its launch. But for some reason sales didn’t quite 

take off as expected. The importer did not arrive at the interview in a 

Smart but in a 911 Porsche. For us this was somehow understandable, 

but at the same time not exactly convincing advertising for the small 

Smart, which with a length of 8.8 feet is quite short and with a width of 

5.1 feet is almost as wide as it is tall. 

In many countries – especially in crowded cities – these dimensions 

are a dream. Where permitted, two Smarts fit into a single parking 

space. In the USA, however, double parking isn’t allowed. Smart 

belongs to Mercedes, and meanwhile 750,000 of the “Fortwo” have 

been sold in 36 countries. The basic model starts at 11,590 dollars, and 

the Cabrio at a modest 16,590 dollars. The small car should be available 

at dealers at the beginning of 2008, and for 99 dollars you can reserve 

one.

Hot, hot, hot: Audi’s attractive 

Concept Cross Cabrio Quattro 

Die diesjährige Automobilausstellung in Los Angeles stand ganz im 

Zeichen des Umweltschutzes – alle Hersteller sind bemüht, die 

Emissionen ihrer Fahrzeuge so stark wie möglich zu reduzieren. 

VW demonstrierte mit dem Space Up Concept Car eindrucksvoll, 

was in Zukunft möglich ist: Das Auto hat über die gesamte Dachfläche 

Solarzellen eingebaut, die aus Sonnen- und Tageslicht Energie gewinnen 

und den Elektromotor des Wagens antreiben. Die 

Stromspeicherung an Bord des Autos erfolgt durch den Energieträger 

Wasserstoff, der mit Strom aus Wasser gewonnen wird und später 

wieder in einer Brennstoffzelle zu Strom verwandelt wird. Auf diese 

Weise kann der Space Up hohe Reichweiten erzielen, die bislang mit 

Elektroantrieb undenkbar waren. 

Aber auch Mercedes überzeugte wieder mit 

dem neuen S400 Bluetech-Hybrid. Das Auto 

wird mit einem V6-Diesel Motor ausgerüstet, der 

265 PS stark ist. Dank der Bluetech-Technologie 

werden alle Emissionen des Motors um rund 

30% reduziert. 

Audi wartete mit dem Concept Cross Cabrio 

Quattro auf, ein Zweitürer mit vier Sitzen. Unter 

der Haube hat das Auto einen leistungsstarken 

3,0 Liter Motor mit 240 PS. 

Fast alle japanischen und amerikanischen 

Hersteller haben völlig neue Hybrid Modelle vorgestellt, 

die ebenfalls starke Einsparungen beim 

Benzinverbrauch und damit stark verbesserte 

Emissionswerte ermöglichen. Auch Porsche überraschte mit der 

Vorstellung eines neuen Cayenne Hybriden und zeigte eindrucksvoll, 

dass man die Bedürfnisse des US Marktes und das wachsende 

Umweltbewusstsein der Käufer verstanden hat. 

Kritiker wie der Autojournalist Helmut Becker werfen den deutschen 

Herstellern vor, die neuesten Entwicklungen der Hybridtechnik verschlafen 

zu haben – in seinem neuen Buch „Ausgebremst. Wie die 

Autoindustrie Deutschland in die Krise fährt” argumentiert Becker, 

dass die Konkurrenz aus Japan wesentlich verbrauchsärmere Autos 

baut. Auch die Amerikaner, so Becker, hätten die Zeichen der Zeit 

erkannt und würden fieberhaft an der Entwicklung umweltfreundlicher 

Autos arbeiten. 

Aber die deutschen Autohersteller weisen diese Vorwürfe zurück – 

Mercedes rühmt sich, bei der Entwicklung der Bluetech-Technologie

weltweit führend zu sein. Und Audi und VW bauen gemeinsam mit dem 

Bundesstaat Kalifornien und verschiedenen namhaften amerikanischen 

Universitäten ein Forschungszentrum in Sacramento auf, das 

zur Aufgabe hat, Technologien zu entwickeln, die Benzinverbrauch 

und Emissionen drastisch senken. Letztlich soll der amerikanische 

Verbraucher dazu „umerzogen” werden, mit Bluetech-Dieselmotoren 

ausgerüstete Fahrzeuge zu kaufen. Allerdings dürfte das ein beschwerlicher 

Weg werden: Denn nach wie vor bieten viele amerikanische 

Tankstellen Diesel nur dann an, wenn sie entlang der großen 

Interstates liegen – denn Diesel wird in den USA vorwiegend von 

Truckern gekauft. 

Die deutsch-amerikanische Kooperation wurde 

zementiert, als Gouverneur Arnold Schwarzenegger 

während seines offiziellen Messebesuches 

bei Audi ein zünftige bayerische Brotzeit 

einnahm: Es gab Weißwürste, Bretz’n, süßen 

Senf und eine Halbe Weißbier. Mit am Tisch 

saßen Ralf Moeller, Thomas Gottschalk, sowie 

die Topmanager Emanuela Wilms (VW) und 

Ralph Weyler (Vorstand Audi). Der Gouverneur 

lobte anschließend ausdrücklich die deutschkalifornische 

Zusammenarbeit und verspricht 

sich von den gemeinsamen Anstrengungen 

große technische Fortschritte. 

Ralph Weyler betonte im Interview mit dem 

Fernsehsender N24: „Wir erwirtschaften in den 

USA, speziell in Kalifornien, einen sehr hohen Anteil unserer Gewinne. 

Kalifornien ist für uns immens wichtig, wir dürfen hier auf keinen Fall 

den Anschluss verpassen und werden alles daran setzen, mit dem 

Gouverneur zusammen Technologien zu entwickeln, die zukunftsweisend 

für den gesamten Automobilbereich sein werden. Wir sind sehr 

froh, dass Kalifornien in Arnold Schwarzenegger einen Politiker mit 

großem Umwelt- und Verantwortungsbewusstsein an der Spitze hat.” 

Übrigens - dank des derzeit sehr starken Euro lohnt es sich für 

Deutsche, ihre Autos in den USA zu kaufen. Trotz der Verschiffung und 

der für die TÜV–Zulassung nötigen Umbauten am Wagen lassen sich 

hohe Summen bei den sogenannten „Selbst-Importen” sparen. Ein

AUTOMOTIVE 

The buzzword at this year’s automobile exhibition in Los Angeles was 

environmental protection – all manufacturers are striving to reduce the 

emission of their vehicles as much as possible. 

VW impressively demonstrated what is possible in the future with 

the Space Up concept car. Solar cells are built into the roof of the car 

and obtain energy from sun and daylight, which then fuel the car’s 

electric engine. Electricity storage on board the car comes from the 

energy source hydrogen – which is obtained from water by electricity 

and is then converted back into electricity in a fuel cell. In this manner 

the Space Up car can travel at speeds previously inconceivable for an 

electrically fueled vehicle. 

But Mercedes also had another strong showing with the new S400 

Bluetech Hybrid. 

The car is equipped with a V6 diesel engine that is 265 PS strong. 

Thanks to Bluetech technology the engine’s emissions are all reduced 

by approximately 30 percent. 

Audi came up with the Concept Cross Cabrio Quatro, a two-door car 

with four seats. Under its hood the car features a powerful 3.0 liter 

engine with 240 PS. 

Nearly all Japanese and American manufacturers presented completely 

new hybrid models, which also show significant reductions in 

gas consumption and thus emissions. 

Critics such as auto journalist Helmut Becker accuse German manufacturers 

of having slept through the latest developments in hybrid 

technology. In his new book “Ausgebremst: Wie die Autoindustrie 

Deutschland in die Krise faehrt” (Thwarted: How the Auto Industry is 

Driving Germany into a Crisis), Becker argues that the competition in 

Japan is building cars with substantially lower gas consumption. Even 

the Americans, according to Becker, have recognized the writing on 

the wall and are feverishly working on developing environmentally 

friendly cars. 

But German auto manufacturers brush off these accusations. 

Mercedes prides itself on being the world leader in the development of 

Bluetech technology. And Audi and VW are establishing a research 

center in Sacramento together with the state of California and a number 

of prestigious American universities for the purpose of developing 

technologies that will drastically reduce gas consumption and emissions. 

The German-American collaboration was cemented when Governor 

Arnold Schwarzenegger partook of a small, hearty Bavarian meal during 

his official visit to the Audi stand at the auto show. There was 

Bavarian weisswurst, bretz’n, sweet mustard, and a half liter of wheat 

beer. Also sitting at the table were Ralf Moeller, Thomas Gottschalk, as 

well as top managers Emanuela Wilms (VW) and Ralph Weyler (Audi 

executive board). The governor strongly praised the German- 

Californian collaborative project and promised that great technical 

progress would come from the combined efforts. 

By the way – thanks to the current strength of the euro it is now 

worth the effort for Germans to buy their cars in the USA. Despite the 

cost of shipping and the rebuilding necessary to obtain a TÜV permit 

for the car, large sums can be saved with “self import.”

THE GERMAN-AMERICAN HERITAGE 

CENTER WILL BECOME A REALITY 

400 years after the first German settlers came 

to North America, the first national German- 

American Heritage Center of the USA will finally 

open in America’s capital. 

The Agreement of Purchase and Sale for 

Hockemeyer Hall in Washington D.C. will be the 

location of the first national German-American 

Heritage Center was finally signed on 

November 8, 2007. The exterior of the building 

was renovated in August 2007 and the design 

work of the interior 

has begun. 

However, the building 

will not be 

ready until June 

or July 2008. This 

give us extra time 

to raise funds. 

So far, we are at 

$1.75 million in 

contributions and 

pledges. We need 

$2.1 million for the 

building and the 

acquisition/closing 

costs. Two of 

the directors have 

also committed to loan any difference between 

the amount collected and $2.1 million on the 

basis of repayable loans. THAT MEANS THAT 

THE FIRST NATIONAL GERMAN-AMERICAN 

HERITAGE CENTER OF THE USA WILL BECOME 

A REALITY. The total fund raising goal remains 

at $3.0 million. 

In accordance with the resolutions of our 

board, all donations of $100 or more will be listed 

in the leather-bound book archived at the 

center. Donations of $25,000 and more will have 

their names engraved on the Wall of Honor at 

the first national German-American Heritage 

Center of the USA. We urge all Americans of 

German-speaking ancestry to financially support 

the establishment of the heritage center.

WITH “THE EDGE OF HEAVEN” AND “TAKVA” THE GERMAN FILM 

DIRECTOR HAS TWO ENTRIES IN THE RACE FOR A BEST FOREIGN- 

LANGUAGE OSCAR NOMINATION 

Filmed in Bremen, Hamburg, Istanbul and Tadzon, 

Turkey, “The Edge of Heaven” (Original title: Auf 

der anderen Seite) by German film director and 

producer Fatih Akin is Germany’s official submission 

to the category “Best Foreign Language 

Film” for this year’s Oscars. The movie tells the 

story of two mothers (one of them superbly played 

by Hanna Schygulla) and their daughters, and of a 

father and his son. The lives of these six people

They drift, most unexpectedly, between 

these two countries. Like Fatih Akin’s 

other remarkable feature film, “Head 

On“, this story is about love, family, immigration, 

and fate - but above all about 

crossing borders between different 

cultures. Beautifully shot by Rainer 

Klausmann and with a very intriguing 

score by Shantel, this is a very 

masterful film which has already 

won numerous awards, including 

“Best Screenplay” at the Cannes 

Film Festival 2007 and at the European Film 

Awards 2007. 

“I wanted to add an extra dimension and 

perspective to how the media have presented 

Turkey joining the EU, as I feel that their view 

can be at times limited,“ he once told Vanity 

Fair in an interview. 

The other Akin movie in the race for a best 

foreign-language Oscar nomination is 

Turkey’s “Takva,” which he co-produced. The 

film is about a devout Muslim living in Istanbul 

who finds his faith devastatingly tested when 

he takes on a job as a rent collector for his 

local imam. With a modest budget of $1.6 million, 

the Turkish side managed to raise 80 percent 

of the financing. Additional funds came 

from Eurimages as well as the Hamburg Film 

Fund. Currently Akin is busy producing 

“Garbage in the Garden of Eden,“ a documentary 

about the impact of the Turkish government’s 

policy of using idyllic Turkish villages 

as landfill sites, and he is also collaborating 

with Martin Scorsese at the World Cinema 

Foundation. 

GERMAN TALENT IN HOLLYWOOD: 

SUCCESSFUL GERMAN AND AUSTRIAN COMPOSERS 

QUIETLY WORKING THEIR WAY UP IN TINSELTOWN 

On November 11, 2007, the SOCIETY OF COMPOSERS & LYRICISTS 

(SCL) invited its members and the press to a special screening of 

AMERICAN GANGSTER directed by Ridley Scott. The film score was 

written by Marc Streitenfeld who has already worked with Ridley Scott 

on seven consecutive films. AMERICAN GANGSTER is the second 

project he has worked on as composer, his first being Scott’s 2006 film 

A GOOD YEAR. Streitenfeld also worked as a music supervisor on 

KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, for which he received a Golden Reel nomination. 

Born in Munich, Germany, Streitenfeld relocated to Los Angeles at 

the age of 19, first working for composer Hans Zimmer as his assistant, 

then as a freelance music editor and music supervisor. 

Many SCL members were originally from Austria, Germany and 

Switzerland, and not everybody had the chance to work with Hans 

Zimmer, SCL Executive Director Laura Dunn remarked with a smile during 

her opening remarks. The best 

example is Kubilay Üner, whom we 

met that night, a Munich native, who 

studied composition with Johannes 

Fritsch and Klarenz Barlow at the 

State Academy of Music in Cologne, 

Germany, and James Newton at 

CalArts. He now works as a freelance 

composer and producer in LA. 

Kubimusik, his new dance pop project, 

created the official theme for the 

2007 LA Fashion Awards, and in 2007 

he was one of the winning contestants of the Cinematic CD Film2Music 

Competition at SUNDANCE. 

Frederik Wiedmann, a native of 

Germany, started his career in 

Boston, and his score to 

Varese Sarabande’s “Return to 

House on Haunted Hill” (star-

The score features the Belgrade Film Orchestra and extensively uses 

synthesizers and other effects. Another European composer attending 

the screening was Gernot Wolfgang, a native of Bad Gastein in Austria, 

who has received numerous commissions from organizations such as 

the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. His composition for the Los 

Angeles Chamber Orchestra “Desert Wind“ was highly praised in the 

LA Times. At present he is curating the concert series “Voices of 

Hollywood,“ which features the chamber music of film/TV composers, 

a project of the Beverly Hills International Music Festival.

hinaus werden Zölle erhoben: CD Spieler 9,5%, DVD Recorder 13,9%, 

MP3 Spieler 4,5%, Textilien 12%, Lederwaren oder Koffer 4%. 

Und: Der deutsche Zoll verlangt harte Euros, nicht weiche Dollars. Wer 

beim Schmuggeln erwischt wird, muss die doppelten Beträge als 

Strafzoll bezahlen – und obendrein mit einem Bußgeldverfahren rechnen. 

Auf diese Weise kann das erhoffte Schnäppchen schnell zu einem 

finanziellen Fass ohne Boden werden. 

Also: den Taschenrechner mitnehmen und die Zölle und Steuern gegen 

die Ersparnis rechnen. Dann macht das Einkaufen wieder Spaß und 

der Trip spart wirklich Geld.

Rebecca Jung from Frankfurt landed at 11 in the morning 

at New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport. At 10:15 in the evening she flew 

back. The special offer from L’tur costs 399 euros and is always sold out. 

During her short trip Rebecca shopped until she dropped. Brand jeans 

(cost in the USA 75 percent less than in Germany), a new laptop, cosmetics, 

a new digital camera, and a new snowboard were on her shopping list. 

All products in the USA are 35 to 60 percent less than in Germany. The 

strong euro makes it possible – right now a US dollar costs just 68 cents. 

Rebecca thus easily covered the cost of her flight. 

The demand is huge – alone in New York over 100,000 shoppers from 

Germany were expected during the Advent season. But beware: German 

custom officials are now inspecting passengers from the USA very closely. 

Many forget that the duty and tax-free allowance is 175 euros. An import 

tax of 13.5 percent is levied on all small presents costing between 175 and 

350 euros, and 19 percent for items over 350 euros. On top of that there are 

custom duties: CD players 9.5 percent, DVD recorders 13.9 percent, MP3 

players 4.5 percent, textiles 12 percent, leather items and suitcases 4 percent. 

And German customs demands hard euros, not soft dollars. Those who 

are caught smuggling have to pay the fees in double as a penalty – and 

must also reckon with an administrative fine. 

This could quickly turn the bargain shopping spree into a bottomless pit…

Max Raabe, the rail-thin singer and bandleader, 

hailed as Germany’s foremost expert 

interpreter of the Weimar-era treasured 

song chest, returned to Los Angeles with his 

new tour program “Tonight Or Never.” 

A trained operatic baritone, Raabe was 

enthusiastically accompanied by the 12 

members of his big band”, the Palast 

Orchester. The cherished supporter of composers 

who were persecuted and whose art 

was labeled “degenerative,” Raabe features 

a whimsical mix of German chansons alongside 

rumbas, fox-trots, elegant tangos and 

covers of modern pop songs. In his new program 

he pays particular tribute to Austrian 

composer Walter Jurman, creator of the 

immortal tune “Veronika, der Lenz ist da,” 

whose widow Yvonne sat among the audience 

at the UCLA concert. A second celebratory 

concert event presented Walter Ruttmann’s 

classic “Berlin: Symphony of a Great 

City” from 1927, with live accompaniment by 

Mannheim native and UCLA organ professor 

Christoph Bull.

AND HIS SUSPENSION BRIDGE 

ON THE OHIO RIVER” 

The Brooklyn Bridge built by John A. Roebling 

is well known as one of the major U.S. landmarks, 

but not many are aware of its prototype 

on the Ohio River that the engineer and his son 

Washington began building in 1856, and completed 

in 1867. Connecting Cincinnati and northern 

Kentucky, the bridge is two-thirds the 

size of the Brooklyn Bridge, and is the subject 

of the book “John A. Roebling and His 

Suspension Bridge on the Ohio River” by wellknown 

historian Dr. Don Heinrich Tolzmann, an 

Ohio-resident. 

This fascinating biography follows Roebling 

from his student days in Berlin to his immigration 

to Pennsylvania, and eventual emergence 

as a bridge builder, then focusing on his bridge 

on the Ohio River. He explores the genius of 

Roebling and his legacy, including the 

Brooklyn Bridge, as well as other suspension 

bridges, such as the Golden Gate Bridge, helping 

us thereby understand the man and the 

bridge builder as well.

DR. GUNTHER VON HAGENS’ 

BODY WORLDS IN MILWAUKEE 

Dr. Gunther von Hagens’ BODY WORLDS, one 

of the most highly attended touring exhibition 

in the world and one of the most controversial 

will open at the Milwaukee Public Museum on 

January 18, 2008. The exhibition will feature 

more than 200 authentic human specimens 

that have been preserved through Plastination, 

a revolutionary process invented by German 

anatomist Dr. von Hagens in 1977, which replaces 

bodily fluids and fat with reactive plastics. 

Von Hagens and his wife Dr. Angelina Whalley, 

conceptual designer of BODY WORLDS and 

director of the Institute for Plastination in 

Heidelberg, Germany, will attend the opening 

in Milwaukee. For the museum which pays $ 

200,000 in advance for the exhibit, this will 

hopefully bring the much needed increase in

GEORGE MINNE 

SCULPTURES AT NEUE GALERIE 

In New York, the Neue Galerie, museum for 

German and Austrian Art, announced the 

receipt of a gift from the heirs of the Bloch- 

Bauer family: Two restituted sculptures by 

George Minne “Kneeling Youths” from approx. 

1898. They were reunited with the famous 

painting of Adele Bloch-Bauer (1907) by 

Gustav Klimt next to which they had been seen 

on display for the first time more than 100 years 

ago. The portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer is the 

centerpiece of the Neue Galerie collection 

which comprises the finest gathering of works 

by Klimt in the US and will be on view through 

June 30, 2008.

FILM EVENING IN 

VILLA AURORA: 

“WOMEN 

BEHIND THE 

CAMERA” 

On November 5, Villa Aurora in Pacific 

Palisades cordially invited over 60 guests to a 

screening “by women about women.” Alexis 

Krasilovsky’s “Women Behind the Camera” 

was shown, a film about the lives of successful 

cinematographers, who along with dangerous 

research and emotional experiences had to 

deal with the daily struggle for success in a 

male-dominated environment. 

The second film, “Afghanistan Unveiled,” 

presented this evening, is the only film by 

women from Afghanistan that depicts the life 

of women in Afghanistan. 

Mary Amin Ayubi participated in this project 

and traveled with eight women through her 

country in order to document the dire circumstances 

of Afghan women and to show the 

world the reality. Together they show a world 

full of tradition filled with humiliation and poignant 

fates. It is a world in which women do no 

more than “simply survive.” Ayubi is also codirector 

of the film “Shadows.” After the film 

was shown without permission from the 

Afghan Media and Cultural Center (AINA), 

Ayubi has no longer been able to live safely in 

her native country. Thanks to “Reporters 

Without Borders”, which described this situation 

to Villa Aurora, Ayubi received the 

Feuchtwanger Fellowship in 2007 and thus 

received a safe residence until last December.

„The Meistersinger Scholarships” und man 

geht nicht zum „Den” sondern in den Rittersaal. 

Die Rede ist vom Wartburg College, das 

nicht etwa in Eisenach sondern im beschaulichen 

Waverly in Iowa liegt und dort 1852 von 

deutschen Einwanderern gegründet wurde. 

Es ist mit etwa 1800 eingeschriebenen 

Studenten ein eher kleines College, doch es ist 

“ 

das einzige, private, von 

deutschen Einwanderern 

gegründete College in 

Amerika, das noch heute ein 

Deutschprogramm anbietet 

sowie einen regen Austausch mit seiner deutschen 

Partnerstadt Eisenach pflegt. So sind 

auch zwei Mitglieder des Board of Regents 

Deutsche, u.a. der Direktor der Wartburg 

Stiftung in Eisenach, und 20 % der Fakultät 

beschäftigt sich im Rahmen der Forschung mit 

Deutschland. 

Andere private, amerikanische Colleges, die 

auf eine Gründung durch deutsche Einwanderer 

zurückblicken, wie z.B. die Wittenburg 

University, das Mühlenberg College und das 

Wagner College, haben die Pflege eines 

Deutschprogramms schon lange aufgegeben. 

Gerade das Wartburg College in Iowa hat 

sich der Historiker und Politologe Dr. Gerald R. 

Kleinfeld, Professor Emeritus der Arizona State 

University, ausgesucht, um mit einer Spende 

von 1 Million US Dollar einen permanenten 

Lehrstuhl für deutsche Geschichte zu finanzieren. 

„Mir ist es wichtig, dass die Arbeit der von 

mir gegründeten German Studies Association 

weitergeht, “erklärt Kleinfeld. „Die Einrichtung 

eines permanenten Lehrstuhls für deutsche 

Geschichte sichert, dass Deutschland immer 

ein Teil des Unterrichts bleibt.”

Nun mag man bei Professor 

Kleinfelds Nachnamen auch 

vermuten, dass er aufgrund 

deutscher Vorfahren dieses 

College als besonders unter- 

stützungswürdig befand. Doch erstens habe er 

seine Vorliebe für deutsche Geschichte und für 

die deutsche Sprache, die er bis heute fließend 

und fast ohne Akzent spricht, erst während 

seiner Collegezeit in New York entdeckt 

und zweitens habe das Wartburg College viele 

Eigenschaften, dass die Wahl schließlich auf 

diese Einrichtung in Iowa fiel, so erklärt mir der 

sympathische, ältere Herr beim Interview in 

seinem gemütlichen Wohnhaus in Arizona. 

„Bei Wartburg geht es in erster Linie um Bildung,” 

so Gerald Kleinfeld begeistert. „Dazu 

gehört auch die Musikerziehung. Darüberhinaus 

ist Wartburg führend in Chemie, Mathematik 

und Betriebswirtschaft.” Auch die 

Forschung sei sehr wichtig, so Kleinfeld weiter:

Dr. Gerald Kleinfeld earned a bachelor’s degree 

from New York University, a master’s degree from 

the University of Michigan and Ph.D. from NYU. In 

his retirement, Kleinfeld continues to serve as a 

lecturer, consultant and contractor in various 

fields relating to Europe, Germany and Austria, 

international relations, higher education, German 

studies, organizational administration, and scholarly 

associations. He has been an officially invited 

election observer for all German federal elections 

since 1987 and has interviewed all German 

Chancellors since Willy Brandt. 

Kleinfeld is the founder and former executive 

director of the German Studies Association, a 

scholarly organization that hosts the world’s 

largest annual meeting on German and Austrian 

affairs, politics and culture.

The cafeteria is called “Mensa,” the coffee shop 

“Konditorei,” the program promoting music is 

called the “The Meistersinger Scholarships,” 

and to eat out on campus, you go to Den- 

Rittersaal. I’m talking about Wartburg College, 

which lies not in Eisenach, Germany, but in contemplative 

Waverly in Iowa, and was founded in 

1852 by German immigrants. 

With around 1800 matriculated students 

Wartburg is a rather small college, yet it is the 

only private college founded by German immigrants 

in America that still offers a German program 

and cultivates an 

active exchange with its 

German partnership city “ 

Eisenach. Thus two members 

of the Board of 

Regents are German, 

including the director of the Wartburg 

Foundation in Eisenach, and 20 percent of the 

faculty is engaged with research involving 

Germany. Other private American colleges 

founded by German immigrants, such as 

Wittenburg University, Mühlenberg College, and 

Wagner College, have long ago ceased cultivating 

a German program. 

In 1999 the College and Wartburg in Eisenach 

established a new, official exchange program 

for professors, employees, and students of 

Wartburg College. 

Historian and political scientist Dr. Gerald R. 

Kleinfeld, professor emeritus of Arizona State 

University, chose Wartburg College in Iowa as 

the institute where he wished to finance a permanent 

professorship for German history, the 

Gerald R. Kleinfeld Distinguished Professorship 

in German History, with a donation of 1 million 

dollars. 

“It is important to me that the work of the 

German Studies Association that I founded continues,” 

explained Kleinfeld. “Establishing a permanent 

professorship for German history guarantees 

that Germany will always remain a part 

of the curriculum.” 

Kleinfeld’s first contact with Wartburg College 

occurred in the 1990s when he – at that time editor 

of the “German Studies Review” – became

He received tenure in 2002. Walther’s interest in 

German colonialism resulted in the book, 

„Creating Germans Abroad: Cultural Policies and 

National Identity in Namibia.“ He earned his Ph.D. 

from the University of Pennsylvania, master’s 

degree from Indiana University and a bachelor’s 

degree from Northwestern University. Walther 

recently presented a research paper at Balliol

Staatsbürgerschaft zusätzlich annehmen 

Ich bin amerikanischer Staatsbürger, geboren 

in Wiesbaden, Deutschland, und habe einen 

amerikanischen Vater und eine deutsche 

Mutter. Beide Eltern sind bereits verstorben, 

aber ich habe noch Verwandtschaft in 

Deutschland. Ich hätte großes Interesse, die 

deutsche Staatsbürgerschaft zu beantragen. 

Gibt es in meinem Fall Chancen auf eine erfolgreiche 

Beantragung? 

ANSWER: 

Nach den von Ihnen geschilderten Fakten ist 

anzunehmen, dass Sie die deutsche Staatsangehörigkeit 

bereits durch Geburt erworben 

haben, da ein Elternteil, nämlich Ihre Mutter 

deutsch war. Grundsätzlich ist davon auszugehen, 

dass ein Kind durch mindestens ein deutsches 

Elternteil automatisch die deutsche und 

durch Geburt in den USA automatisch die amerikanische 

Staatsangehörigkeit erwirbt. Eine 

spätere Entscheidung zwischen den beiden 

Staatsangehörigkeiten ist bei dieser Sachlage 

nicht erforderlich, und eine solche Person kann 

dauerhaft Doppelstaatler sein. 

Sie geben jedoch an, in Deutschland und 

nicht in den USA als Kind eines amerikanischen 

Vaters geboren worden zu sein. In diesem Falle 

bliebe zu prüfen, wie Sie die amerikanische 

Staatsbürgerschaft erlangt haben, und ob Sie 

dadurch ggf. die deutsche Staatsangehörigkeit 

verloren haben könnten. Die deutsche 

Staatsbürgerschaft kann z.B. verloren werden, 

wenn eine fremde Staatsangehörigkeit durch 

eigenen Antrag erworben wird oder bei 

antragsgemäßen Verzicht, oder bei 

Doppelstaatlern bei Eintritt in den bewaffneten 

Verband z.B. in Ihrem Falle der USA. 

Sollten Sie die deutsche Staatsbürgerschaft 

verloren haben, so könnten Sie unter 

Umständen eine Rückeinbürgerung nach § 13 

Staatsangehörigkeitsgesetzes beantragen. 

Voraussetzung dafür wäre der Nachweis Ihrer 

Unterhaltsfähigkeit, das Beherrschen der deut- 


schen Sprache und der Nachweis von 

Bindungen an Deutschland. In der Regel wird 

auch Krankenversicherungsschutz für 

Deutschland verlangt.

Das I Visum ist ein Nicht-Einwanderungsvisum 

für ausländische Journalisten. Sie können eine 

Verlängerung des Visums auf dem Formular I- 

539 (Application to Extend/Change nonimmigrant 

status) hier in den USA beantragen. Bei 

einem Wohnsitz in Kalifornien richten Sie Ihren 

Antrag an das USCIS California Service Center 

(P.O. Box 10539, Laguna Niguel, CA 92607-1053). 

Die Bearbeitungsgebühr beträgt derzeit $300 

und die Bearbeitungsdauer beträgt zurzeit drei 

Monate. Grundsätzlich könnten Sie in Ihrem 

Antrag ebenfalls eine Verlängerung des 

Visums für Ihren Ehepartner und Ihre unverheirateten 

Kinder unter 21 Jahren beantragen, 

wenn diese sich als Abhängige aufgrund Ihres

The Vogt Family in front of the BallinStadt 

Ein ganz besonderes Familientreffen fand letztes Jahr in dem neu 

eröffneten Auswandererzentrum „Port of Dreams – BallinStadt” in 

Hamburg statt. 33 Mitglieder der deutsch-amerikanischen Familie Vogt 

waren dank der Organisation des Hamburger Vogt-Familienmitgliedes 

Dieter Teichmann in der norddeutschen Hafenstadt an historischer 

Stelle zusammen gekommen, denn von hier waren ihre Vorfahren im 

Jahre 1906 in die USA emigriert. 

Fünf Vogt-Generationen haben seit der Ankunft von Christian 

Heinrich Vogt, ein 1877 in Friedrichsort geborener Bauer, und seiner 

1880 geborenen Frau Catharina Victoria in den USA gelebt – die meisten 

von ihnen in Wisconsin und Arizona. 

Die Reise in die Vergangenheit ist für 

die Familie Vogt die Erfüllung eines 

langgehegten Traumes. 100 Jahre 

nachdem ihre Vorfahren in die USA 

aufbrachen, kamen allein 15 Familienmitglieder 

den weiten Weg nach 

Hamburg, um mehr darüber zu erfahren, 

was ihre Vorfahren erlebten, als 

sie ihre Heimat verließen. 

Die Familie staunte über die beeindruckende 

Sammlung an historischen 

Dokumenten und den interaktiven Ausstellungsstücken. Ein Höhepunkt 

war die Sichtung der Passagierliste von 1906 in der Datenbank 

des Familienforschungszentrum. Joseph George Vogt war der erste, 

der den Namen seines Vaters auf dem Monitor fand. 

Alle Informationen über die Auswanderer wurden damals in den 

Passagierlisten der Schiffe eingetragen und machen sie damit zu einer 

einzigartigen historischen Quelle, die in BallinStadt allen Besuchern in 

digitaler Form kostenfrei zugänglich ist. 

Familie Vogt verweilte viele Stunden in BallinStadt, um einzutauchen 

in die Atmosphäre, die ihre Vorfahren damals vor mehr als 100 Jahren 

erlebten.

THE VOGT FAMILY REUNION 

HISTORY 

A very special family reunion took place last year, in the newly opened 

Port of Dreams– BallinStadt – Emigrant World Hamburg. Thirty-three 

members of the German-American Vogt family met at this historic location 

– their ancestors’ port of departure when they emigrated to the 

United States in 1906. 

Five generations of Vogts have lived in the USA since Christian 

Heinrich Vogt, a farmer from Friedrichsort, born in 1877, and his wife 

Catharina Victoria, born in 1880, landed on American soil. Most family 

members have lived in Wisconsin and Arizona. 

For the Vogt family it is a journey to the origins of their family and the 

ful!llment of a longtime dream. More than 100 years after their forebears 

left for America, fifteen family members in the United States traveled to 

Hamburg for the reunion to get a deeper understanding of what their 

ancestors experienced as they were leaving their homeland. The reunion 

was organized by Hamburg family member Dieter Teichmann: “We’re 

happy to visit the site where it all started.” 

Family members – American and 

German alike – were impressed by the 

collection of historic documents and 

interactive “edutainment” exhibitions. A 

highlight was the old passenger list from 

1906 in the Family Research Center’s 

database. Joseph George Vogt was the 

1st to discover his father’s name in the 

ship’s register and was visibly moved as 

he pointed to the monitor, saying, “That’s 

my father!” 

Information on the emigrants was originally entered in the passenger 

lists, which today are a unique feature of BallinStadt. No other research 

source contains such complete information on all the emigrants, including 

age, profession, family status, and last place of residence. In cooperation 

with ancestry.de, the German subsidiary of the largest genealogical 

data bank provider MyFamily.com, theBallinStadt emigrant center offers 

free access to one of the world’s most extensive collections of genealogical 

data. 

The Vogt family spent many hours at the emigrant museum researching 

and taking their time in truly reliving their ancestors last hours on German 

soil before they boarded the ship to America about 100 years ago.

IN PHILADELPHIA 

Ein Schwarzwälder kocht in Amerikas 

traditionsreichstem Gourmet-Restaurant 

Wie ins 18. Jahrhundert zurückversetzt fühlte ich mich, als ich auf 

Vorschlag des Präsidenten der German Society in Philadelphia, Hardy 

von Auenmüller, das Restaurant „City Tavern” auf Second Street betrat. 

Freundlich wurden wir von Personal in Kostümen aus der Kolonialzeit 

begrüßt und an einen mit Zinnplatztellern und Zinnbechern stilvoll 

gedeckten Tisch in der oberen Etage des dreistöckigen Gebäudes 

geführt. 

Ehrfürchtig blickte ich mich um. Hier also 

waren schon George Washington, John Adams 

und Thomas Jefferson vor über 200 Jahren eingekehrt 

und hier hatten sich 1774 die Mitglieder 

des ersten “Continental Congress” regelmäßig 

getroffen. 

Auch ein Blick in die Karte lässt mich meine 

Zeitreise weiter fortsetzen, als ich den “Martha 

Washington Style Colonial Turkey Pot Pie” und 

Biere nach Originalrezepten von George 

Washington und Thomas Jefferson finde. 

Das Originalgebäude von City Tavern von 1773 brannte 1834 teilweise 

nieder und wurde 1854 ganz abgerissen. Erst 1976, zur 200-Jahrfeier der 

amerikanischen Unabhängigkeit, konnte das Restaurant wieder eröffnet 

werden. Doch leider mit wenig Erfolg. Erst seit 1994, als der geborene 

Pforzheimer Walter Staib Besitzer und Chefkoch von „City Tavern” 

wurde, ist Amerikas erstes Gourmet-Restaurant wieder in seinem alten 

Glanz erstrahlt. Staib wertete alte Speisekarten aus, erforschte die 

Quäkerküche und fand alte Rezepte von Martha Washington. Er bietet 

als einziger Küchenchef in Amerika ausschließlich historische Gerichte 

an. Er geht sogar so weit, dass alles wie im 18. Jahrhundert betrieben 

wird. „Tiefkühlwaren oder Convenience Food gibt es in dieser Küche 

nicht,” erklärt Staib, der auch seine weiße Kochjacke gern mal gegen 

einen Anzug aus dem 18. Jahrhundert austauscht, energisch. Nur 

Elektrizität und Klimaanlage sind als moderne Attribute zugelassen. 

Walter Staib hat erfolgreich den Spagat zwischen den Jahrhunderten 

gemeistert und bereitet historische Gerichte originalgetreu, aber dem 

heutigen Geschmack entsprechend zu. Aber er schafft auch den Spagat 

zwischen den Kulturen: er, der bereits mit vier Jahren in der Küche des 

Gasthauses seines Onkels im Schwarzwald half und sein ganzes professionelles 

Training als Koch im Schwarzwald und in der Schweiz erhielt, 

kam 1975 durch einen Kochwettbewerb in die Staaten und wurde 1996

offiziell zum Ersten Kulinarischen Botschafter der Stadt Philadelphia 

ernannt. Sein Herz schlägt jedoch immer noch für die Schwarzwälder 

Küche und es ist ihm ein Anliegen, den Amerikanern mehr von seiner 

kulinarischen Heimat näher zu bringen als nur Schwarzwälder 

Kirschtorte. Sein neuestes Kochbuch “Black Forest Cuisine – The 

Classic Blending of European Flavors” kombiniert leicht verständliche 

Rezepte mit persönlichen Anekdoten, 

Schilderungen der Region, aus der das Rezept 

stammt, und Erklärungen der verschiedenen 

deutschen Traditionen. In seiner neuen 26-Folgen 

langen Kochshow “Cuisine of the Black Forest” 

auf Comcast TV (CN8) bringt Walter Staib, der 

2007 mit dem deutschen Bundesverdienstkreuz 

ausgezeichnet wurde, den Amerikanern seine 

Heimat noch näher. Gedreht wurde an allen Orten 

im Schwarzwald, die mit seiner Karriere zu tun 

haben, und sogar Mutter Herta wurde als 

Ratgeber hinzugezogen. In jeder Folge kocht 

Staib nicht nur einige Originalgerichte sondern stellt den Zuschauern 

auch in einem Kurzfilm den jeweiligen Ort im Schwarzwald vor. 

Doch damit nicht genug: mit seiner Consulting Firma Concepts by Staib, 

Ltd., berät er im Bereich Food & Beverage eine Vielzahl von Vier- und 

Fünf-Sterne-Hotelketten und mittlerweile haben weltweit mehr als 300

A Black Forest Native Lead America’s First Gourmet Restaurant to New Success 

I felt like having traveled back in time when I stepped into the ”City 

Tavern” on Second Street , following a suggestion of Hardy von 

Auenmüller, president of the German Society of Philadelphia. Waiters 

and waitresses garbed in 18th century fashions welcome us and take 

us to our table which is beautifully set with traditional tin plates and tin 

mugs. Completely in awe, I glance around. So this is the place where 

George Washington, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson dined more 

than 200 years ago and where members of the First Continental 

Congress had their gatherings in 1774. 

My traveling back in time continued when I looked at the menu finding 

such dishes like “Martha Washington Style Colonial Turkey Pot 

Pie” and ales and lagers brewed according to original recipes from 

George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. 

The original building of City Tavern from 1773 was partially destroyed 

in a fire in 1834 and completely demolished in 1854. In 1976 the restaurant 

could finally be reopened. However, the first owners were not very 

successful. It was not before 1994 when a native from Pforzheim, 

Germany, Walter Staib, took over “City Tavern” as the chef-proprietor 

that America’s first gourmet restaurant of all times was brought back to 

its old glory. Staib studied historic menus, recipes of the Amish people 

and discovered original recipes written by Martha Washington in the 

18th century. He is the only chef in North America that offers nothing 

but historic dishes prepared in the traditional way at City Tavern. 

“Frozen food or convenience food are non-existing in this kitchen,” 

explains Staib who loves to exchange his white cooking jacket for a 

18th century outfit. Electricity and air condition are the only modern 

times concessions that he would allow at City Tavern. 

Walter Staib has definitively bridged a time gap of more than two 

centuries by offering historic dishes while at the same time maintaining 

the highest standards of contemporary fine dining. However, he has 

also managed to build bridges between different cultures. Spending 

his early and most important years of culinary training in Germany’s 

Black Forest region, Staib was appointed the First Culinary 

Ambassador to the City of Philadelphia in 1996 and in 2006 he received 

the prestigious Seven Stars & Stripes Award for excellence in gastronomy 

and hospitality for “City Tavern”. 

However, his true love is the cuisine of the Black Forest and it is his 

mission to introduce Americans to the culinary delights of his homeland. 

His latest cookbook “Black Forest Cuisine – The Classic Blending 

of European Flavors” is a combination of easy to understand recipes, 

personal anecdotes and regional descriptions. 

Staib who was awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit of 

Germany in 2007, also started a 26-sequel-cooking-show on Comcast 

TV (CN8), “Cuisine of the Black Forest”, on December 9, 2007, in which 

he is not only demonstrating original Black Forest cooking but also 

takes the viewers to original locations of the Black Forest where he 

worked and lived. For the utmost authenticity, he even had his mother 

Helga flown in for first-hand advice. 

Walter Staib has also been very successful with his company 

Concepts By Staib, Ltd., a hospitality consulting firm to numerous Fourand 

Five-Star hotel chains. In the past ten years he has successfully 

conceptualized and implemented more than 300 restaurants worldwide.

A Little Brief in History of City 

Tavern in Philadelphia (excerpts): 

Originally constructed by subscription in 1772, 

completed in 1773. 

The unofficial meeting place for the First Continental 

Congress, late summer of 1774. On July 4, 1777, 

delegates to the Congress celebrated the first 

anniversary of independence here. 

During the late 1770’s and early 1800’s, visiting d 

ignitaries and foreign diplomats dined at City Tavern 

while visiting such notables as George Washington, 

Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. 

March 22, 1834, City Tavern was partially destroyed by 

fire. In 1854, the original structure was demolished. 

In 1948, Congress designated the historic area, Old 

Philadelphia, as Independence National Historical Park 

and commissioned the historically accurate reconstruction 

of City Tavern. In 1976, the building was completed. 

July 1994, restaurateur Walter Staib took over as 

operator of the Tavern. 

2000, City Tavern is awarded TV Food Network’s Best 

Historic Restaurant. 

2006, Walter Staib and City Tavern receive the prestigious 

Seven Stars & Stripes Award for excellence in 

gastronomy and hospitality.

3 pounds skinless boneless 

turkey thighs, cut into 2-inch cubes 

4 medium shallots, chopped 

4 garlic cloves, chopped 

1/2 bunch fresh basil and parsley 

1 sprig fresh thyme, chopped 

3/4 cup of olive oil 

1 leek (white part only), cut into 

2-inch strips, for garnish 

1/2 cup all-purpose flour 

3 medium yellow onions, 4 celery 

ribs, 3 large carrots; all diced 

1/2 cup dry sherry 

4 cups (1 quart) chicken stock 

1 bay leaf

Cooking like Martha Washington in 1753: 

TAVERN TURKEY STEW WITH FRIED OYSTERS 

A favorite on City Tavern’s luncheon menu, 

this dish is inspired by one in “Martha 

Washington’s Booke of Cookery.” It pairs 

oysters with poultry, 

a common practice in the 18th century. 

(Overnight preparation recommended.) 


2 cups demi-glace and shredded 

red cabbage 

2 medium zucchini and 2 yellow 

squash, halved lengthwise and 

sliced 

1/2 pound (2 sticks) unsalted butter 

1/2 cup chopped tomato 

Salt and freshly ground black 

pepper 

(Homemade) Egg Noodles, for 

serving 

Cornmeal Fried Oysters, for serving 

(separate recipe on pg. 21; not published 

here) 

Serves 4 – 6. 

Preparation: 

1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the turkey cubes, shallots, garlic, basil, 

parsley, thyme, and 2 tablespoons of the oil. Cover with plastic and marinate 

in refrigerator, stirring occasionally, at least for 6 hours overnight. 

2. Pour 1/4 cup of oil into a large saucepan. Heat the oil over high heat to 350°F. 

Add the leek and cook for 1 minute, until golden brown. Remove the leek 

from the oil and place on a paper towel. Reserve. 

3. Remove the turkey cubes from the marinade, discarding the marinade. Pat 

the turkey dry with paper towels and place in a medium mixing bowl. 

4. Sprinkle the flour over the turkey cubes and toss. 

5. In a large skillet, cook the turkey in 2 tablespoons of the oil over high heat 

for 45 minutes, until brown. 

6. Add the onions, celery, and carrots, and sauté for 5 to 8 minutes, until the 

vegetables are crisp-tender. 

7. Add the sherry to deglaze the pan, loosening any browned bits on the bottom 

of the pan with a wooden spoon. Reduce the heat to medium and cook, 

until the liquid is reduced by half, about 30 minutes. Add the chicken stock 

and bring to a boil over high heat. 

8. Add the bay leaf. Reduce the heat and simmer, until liquid is reduced by half. 

Add the demi-glace and bring to a boil over high heat. Remove from heat. 

9. In another large skillet, sauté red cabbage, zucchini, and yellow squash in 

the butter and remaining oil over medium heat for 5 minutes. 

10. Add the tomato and sauté for 2 minutes more. 

11. Gently stir the vegetable mixture into the turkey mixture. 

12. Serve the stew over (homemade) egg noodles and garnish with cornmeal 

fried oysters and the reserved fried leeks. 

Editor’s note: Like most dishes from the 18th century cuisine, this is a very 

hearty dish. For sure, not something for people with delicate stomachs, on a 

diet, or with tight schedules.

Wer hat nicht schon von dem sagenhaften Pulverschnee der Rocky 

Mountains gehört? In der Tat ist das „Weiße Gold“ in den USA meist viel 

leichter und flockiger als in Europa. Die einfache Erklärung: Der amerikanische 

Schnee hat einen wesentlich geringeren Feuchtigkeitsgehalt. 

Das liegt an den geographischen Bedingungen: US-Skigebiete liegen oft 

mehr als 1,000 Meter höher als Skigebiete in Europa – und je höher man 

kommt, desto geringer ist die Luftfeuchtigkeit. Außerdem: Viel 

Feuchtigkeit der vom Pazifik anrückenden Tiefdruckgebiete regnet sich 

bereits an der Westseite der kalifornischen Sierra Nevada und des 

Kaskadengebirges in Washington und Oregon ab – ehe sie die 

Hauptkämme der Rocky Mountains erreichen. 

VAIL UND ASPEN IM WESTEN 

Experten und Skifans streiten seit vielen Jahren darüber, welches 

Skigebiet im Westen der USA das Beste ist. Vail und Aspen im 

Bundesstaat Colorado gehören sicher zu den bekanntesten – in beiden 

Orten gibt es eine Riesenauswahl aller möglichen Hotelkategorien, die 

Skigebiete bieten für alle Könnerklassen eine reichhaltige Auswahl an 

Pisten. Schlangen an den Liften, besonders in den Schulferienzeiten ein 

Ärgernis in europäischen Skigebieten, kennt man in den US 

Wintersportorten nicht. Die Kapazitäten der Anlagen sind höher als in

Rendezvous Mountain ist nur etwas für Steilhangspezialisten und 

Lebensmüde. Aber es gibt auch viele Pisten für Leute mit mittlerem 

Fahrkönnen. Der Ort selbst ist urig, eine Cowboy-Stadt mit entsprechender 

Kundschaft in den Bars und Restaurants. Das Publikum ist meist 

jung, oft sehr sportlich – aber auch sehr international. Jackon Hole gilt 

als Treffpunkt der sogenannte NORAM’s – Skifreaks aus den USA, 

Kanada und Europa, die ihr Können unter Beweis stellen wollen. 

DEER VALLEY UND PARK CITY FÜR DIE FAMILIE 

Eher familienorientiert sind Deer Valley und Park City in Utah – die 

Skigebiete sind einfach bis mittelschwer, mit einigen wenigen Pisten für 

fortgeschrittene Könner. Deer Valley ist snowboard-frei. Während des 

Sundance Film Festivals (Ende Januar) kann der Ort sehr überlaufen sein. 

Der Vorteil: Fast alle großen Skigebiete in Utah liegen weniger als eine 

Autostunde vom internationalen Flughafen von Salt Lake City entfernt. 

BIG SKY IST FÜR KÖNNER 

Big Sky im US Bundesstaat Montana ist wieder etwas für Könner. Drei 

der fünf Abfahrten vom “Hausberg” Lone Mountain gelten als “extremst 

schwierig”. 

TAHOE UND HEAVENLY BIETEN FÜR JEDEN ETWAS 

In Kalifornien liegen die Skigebiete von Tahoe Valley (rings um den 

Austragungsort der olympischen Winterspiele von 1960, Squaw Valley) 

und Heavenly (ein Teil liegt im Bundesstaat Nevada). Beide bieten hochalpines 

Wintervergnügen mit Abfahrten aller Schwierigkeitsgrade. 

Sämtliche US-Skigebiete profitieren vom starken Euro – Preise für 

Tagesliftkarten liegen zwischen 45 und 78 Dollar (30-53 Euro), bei mehrtägigen 

Aufenthalten sinken die Preise um rund 10%. Verglichen mit europäischen

SKIING IN THE USA – 

NEVER HAS IT BEEN AS AFFORDABLE AS THIS WINTER 

Who hasn’t heard of the legendary powder snow of the Rocky 

Mountains? In fact, the “white gold” in the USA is typically much 

lighter and fluffier than in Europe. The simple explanation: American 

snow contains considerably less moisture. This is due to geographical 

conditions: US ski resorts are often located more than 3,300 feet higher 

than ski resorts in Europe – and the higher you go, the lower the 

humidity. In addition, much of the moisture coming from the Pacific 

Ocean’s low pressure regions falls as rain on the western side of 

California’s Sierra Nevada mountains and the Cascade mountains in 

Washington and Oregon – before it even reaches the Rocky 

Mountains. 

Experts and ski fans have argued for years over which ski resort is the 

best in the western US. Vail and Aspen in Colorado are certainly among 

the most well known. Both towns have an abundance of hotels in all 

categories, and the ski resorts offer a wide variety of runs in all levels. 

Lines at all lifts, a major annoyance in European ski resorts, especially 

during the school holidays, are practically unknown in US winter sport 

resorts. The capacities of the facilities are greater than in Europe, 

because they offer more seats and run much faster. Vail and Aspen 

have a much-acclaimed après ski scene. In both towns many 

Hollywood stars have been spotted in the numerous bars, restaurants 

and shops. 

Absolute ski freaks definitely get their money’s worth in Jackson Hole 

in Wyoming. Experts regard it as the most difficult ski resort in the 

world. Warning: the northern descent from Rendezvous Mountains is 

something only for cliff specialists and the suicidal. But there are also 

numerous runs for intermediate skiers. The resort itself is quaint, a 

cowboy town with the corresponding customers in bars and restaurants. 

The public is generally young, often very athletic – but also very 

international. Jackson Hole is regarded as a meeting place of socalled 

NORAM’s – ski freaks from the USA, Canada and Europe who 

want to prove their skills. 

Deer Valley and Park City in Utah are more family oriented – the ski 

resorts are easy to moderately difficult, with only a few runs for 

advanced skiers. Snowboarding is not allowed at Deer Valley. During 

the Sundance Film Festival (end of January) the resorts can be very 

crowded. The advantage: almost all large ski resorts in Utah lie less 

than a one hour drive from the international airport in Salt Lake City. 

Big Sky in Montana is again for expert skiers. Three of the five 

descents from “Hausberg” Lone Mountain are rated as “extremely difficult.” 

In California the ski resorts of Tahoe Valley (encircling the venue of 

the Olympic Winter Games in 1960, Squaw Valley) and Heavenly (a part 

of which lies in Nevada). Both offer high-alpine winter sports with runs 

of all levels of difficulty. 

All US ski resorts are profiting from the strong euro – prices for a day lift 

pass range from 45 and 78 dollars (30-53 euros). Prices sink around 10 

percent if passes are purchased for several days. Practically a joke 

compared with European prices. 

TRAVEL

Arrival: 

The best destination airports are Denver, Salt Lake City, and San 

Francisco. Many resorts and hotels offer free shuttle service from the 

airport to your hotel. 

Vacation Packages: 

All the US winter sport resorts mentioned above offer a number of 

vacation packages, which can be viewed on the Web sites of travel 

agencies. Those who stay for at least a week should search for packages 

that combine hotel accommodations, lift passes, and transfers 

to and from the airport. Often substantial savings are possible. 

American airlines also offer packages on their Web sites that include 

flights as well as the above-mentioned services. At any rate, they are 

definitely worth checking out. Particularly good: Delta Airlines (has a 

hub in Salt Lake City), United Airlines (hubs in Denver and San 

Francisco) and Frontier Airlines (based in the Denver airport). 

Car Rentals: 

Not necessary in most places – unless you want to explore the surrounding 

area. 

Eating and Drinking 

Only expensive in Aspen, otherwise very affordable for German 

tourists due to the strong euro. 

Beware: The drinking age in the US is still 21. If you are younger, you 

won’t be allowed into any bar. The only exception in the US: Wyoming. 

This traditionally rebellious state allows young people over 18 into 

bars. If accompanied by their parents they can drink beer (but no hard 

liquor). 

Ski and Snowboard Rentals: 

Available in every US winter sport resort. Costs are between 25 and 

60 dollars a day, depending on the equipment.

Auch die amerikanischen Fluggesellschaften bieten auf ihren Webseiten 

Pauschalreisen an, die außer den oben genannten Leistungen 

noch die Flüge berücksichtigen. Es lohnt sich auf alle Fälle, da mal zu 

stöbern. Besonders gut: Delta Airlines (hat in Salt Lake City ein 

Drehkreuz), United Airlines (Drehkreuze in Denver und San 

Francisco) und Frontier Airlines (Heimatflughafen Denver). 

Leihwagen: 

Ist in fast allen Orten nicht notwendig – es sein denn man will die Umgebung 

erkunden. 

Essen und Trinken 

Nur in Aspen teuer, ansonsten: Dank des starken Euro für deutsche 

Touristen preiswert. 

Achtung: Nach wie vor ist das sogenannte “Drinking Age” in den USA 

21 – wer jünger ist, kommt in keine Bar rein. Einzige US Ausnahme: 

Wyoming. Der traditionell rebellische Staat erlaubt Jugendlichen ab 

18 den Aufenthalt in Bars, sie dürfen in Begleitung der Eltern Bier trinken 

(aber keine harten Sachen). 

Ski und Snowboard Verleih: 

Gibt es in jedem US Wintersportort. Kosten zwischen 25 und 60 Dollar 

am Tag, je nach Ausrüstung. 


TO PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT 

SWISS is now offering customers an option for voluntarily 

offsetting the CO? emissions released when 

they travel, by paying a corresponding amount along 

with their airfare. The additional amount is paid to 

the Swiss-based myclimate foundation, SWISS’s 

partner in providing the new option, which will 

invest the money in climate protection projects. In 

doing so, the foundation will make sure that the 

investments will save the same amount of carbon 

dioxide emissions as are generated by the customer’s

SWISS HOUSE OPENS IN 

SOS CHILDREN’S VILLAGE/DAR ES SALAAM 

On November 1, a new SWISS House opened in the 

SOS Children’s Village in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. 

The construction of the house was funded by generous 

donations from SWISS passengers in 2005. 

SWISS has been supporting SOS Children’s Villages 

international charity for disadvantaged children 

through its „Your small change can make a big 

change“ campaign that asks passengers to donate 

foreign currency on board flights. The construction 

of the new house has been financed through the 

generosity of SWISS customers, who donated 

around CHF 208,800 (ca. $180,000) to the SOS 

Children’s Villages international charity via the airline’s 

inflight collecting campaign in 2005. SWISS 

employees also contributed by funding the children’s 

living expenses through donations to the 

SWISS Staff Foundation for Children in Need. The 

SWISS House will offer ten orphaned children a new 

home. The Dar es Salaam SOS Children’s Village 

consists of 13 houses and other facilities. The 

Village can provide up to 120 young orphans with a 

safe and caring environment. 

WITH UNITED AIRLINES DAILY FROM 

LOS ANGELES TO FRANKFURT FOR $486 

United Airlines has been flying nonstop from Los 

Angeles to Frankfurt since December 2007 because 

of the high customer demand. Before December the 

only nonstop flight from the American West coast 

left from San Francisco. 

Incidentally, United is offering an introductory fare 

for 486 dollars (around 325 euros), including all 

taxes, starting March 15. Departure every day from 

LAX at 5:25 PM, arrival in Frankfurt at 1:25 PM the 

next day. Return flights from Frankfurt to LA depart at 

3:20 PM, arrival at 6:14 PM.

which Goethe Institut Los Angeles invited a high-profile team of panelists

Rocco, the guardian of the fortress. She decides to see her 

husband and save him. Don Pizzarro, the criminal governor, 

learns that the news of his ill doings reached even 

Seville and that Minister Don Ferdinand, Florestan’s friend, 

whom he thought dead was personally coming to investigate 

Pizzarro’s activity. He gives order to the guardian of 

the fortress, Rocco, to kill Florestan, but he refuses, so he 

decides to murder the prisoner himself. Rocco and Fidelio 

leave together to dig the prisoner’s grave. Leonora does not 

recognize Florestan in the dark, where he was wearily 

sleeping. Only after he awakes she recognizes her husband…

DIE FLIEGENDE ORGEL

Der deutsche Orgelbauer Philipp Klais wirkt angespannt. 

Vor ihm stehen vier Holzkisten, groß wie ein Garagentor, 

darin eine Orgel im Wert von einer halben Million Euro. Per 

Hubschrauber werden die 900 Kilogramm schweren Kisten 

in die unwegsamen schottischen Highlands geflogen. Ein 

schottischer Wirtschaftsprüfer hat sie sich für seinen 400 

Jahre alten Landsitz bestellt. Mit der 125-jährigen 

Erfahrung seiner Orgelbauer-Familie hat Klais aus 

100.000 Teilen ein klingendes Unikat geschaffen. Wichtig 

ist jetzt nur, dass es nicht regnet, der Hubschrauberpilot 

keinen Fehler macht und die Kisten dicht halten. 

Reporter Stefan Quante war bei der Erfüllung eines 

ungewöhnlichen Lebenstraumes dabei. DW-TV zeigt die

war in Vietnam. For some, this idealistic movement was 

not enough: they became active and violent revolutionaries, 

organizing such terrorist groups as the Black Panthers 

and the Red Brigades. In Germany, a young and disaffected 

radical by the name of Andreas Baader was soon to 

become the leader of one of the most dangerous terrorist 

groups in Europe, the Baader-Meinhof Gang, later known 

as the Red Army Faction. 

At the age of 24, Andreas Baader is again busted for car 

theft, this time landing a three-month prison sentence and 

further deepening his hatred of authority and his antagonism 

toward the „oppressive system“. Fed up with useless 

demonstrations, Baader resolutely plans to hit the establishment 

in a far more radical way. Together with his lover 

and soul mate Gudrun Ensslin and two comrades, he firebombs 

department stores in Frankfurt. Police 

Superintendent Kurt Krone, a socialist who sympathizes 

with Baader’s cause but not his tactics, takes charge of the 

investigation. Sentenced to prison and temporarily 

released, Baader compels his comrades into fleeing to 

Paris. It is at this point that Baader pressures the group to 

go underground and organize a revolutionary cell. Joined by 

the intellectual political journalist Ulrike Meinhof, they are 

soon to become famous as the Baader-Meinhof Gang, or 

R.A.F. Under Baader’s forceful command and aided by the 

East-German secret police, the Stasi, they travel to Jordan 

to train in the art of terrorism but their „hippie“ tendencies 

offend their militant Lebanese hosts who throw them out of 

the country. Back in Germany the police, now fully prepared 

and on high alert, swiftly turn on the heat. In response, the 

Baader-Meinhof Gang goes on a rampage. Using explosives 

and heavy military weapons, they rob banks, blow up 

cars, and bomb two American military bases, killing four 

officers and leaving numerous others seriously injured. 

Determined to halt the escalation of violence, 

Superintendent Krone and his police dragnet methodically 

close in. A trap is set, which soon brings Krone face to face 

with his adversary.
