in the so-called localism based upon which<br />
local surfers claim ”their“ wave.<br />
Now what has surfing got to do with a landlocked<br />
country like Austria? Who would think of surfing<br />
in Austria?<br />
Both skateboarding and snowboarding are<br />
sports which were invented by surfers. Therefore,<br />
surfing is the ”mother“ of all board sports.<br />
And this is probably why many snowboarders<br />
and skaters felt a magical attraction toward surfing,<br />
also in Austria. Already 14 years ago, the<br />
Austrian Wave Riding Association was founded<br />
(www.austriansurfing.at). Back then, a surfing<br />
scene, which often only consisted of a handful of<br />
surfers, had developed in a few Austrian cities.<br />
And these surfers started to explore the world’s<br />
coasts in search for waves.<br />
In the meantime, a lot has changed. Over the<br />
last decade there has been a real surfing boom<br />
all over the world, which is not least reflected in<br />
the sports‘ presence in the media and the film<br />
industry.<br />
This boom can also be observed in Austria. The<br />
number of Austrian surf camps, their visitor numbers<br />
and the number of individual surfing travellers<br />
are increasing year after year. Surfwear has<br />
become normal in summer, there are surf parties<br />
and surf videos, the media report on surf events,<br />
there are diploma theses on surfing, rivers are<br />
searched for standing waves at high water level<br />
and, recently, even the creation of artificial waves<br />
has become reality.<br />
How does a mountain enthusiast become a water<br />
enthusiast and where can he/she find the perfect<br />
waves?<br />
Already since 1993, Wave Tours (www.wavetours.com),<br />
