Bibliophile Schatzkammer
Das Studienzentrum für Künstlerpublikationen in der Weserburg
A Bibliophile’s Treasure Trove
The Research Centre for Artists’ Publications in Weserburg
Text: Dr. Thurmann-Jajes/Christina Haas Translation: Brian Poole
zusammen. Der Begriff „Künstlerpublikation“
schließt dabei sämtliche Formen publizierter
Kunstwerke ein wie z. B. Künstlerbücher, Multiples,
Buchobjekte, Künstlerzeitungen und -zeitschriften,
Ephemera wie von Künstlern gestaltete Plakate
und Einladungskarten, Foto-Editionen, Postkarten,
Briefmarken, Aufkleber, Grafiken, grafische Arbeiten,
Künstlerschallplatten, -kassetten und andere
Tonträger, Multimedia-Editionen auf CD-ROM und
DVD sowie Künstlervideos und -filme etc.
These are rather precious objects that rarely find
their way into museum exhibitions; often they exude
their humour and unbridled creativity far from the
public eye. Those who own an artist’s publication
probably knew the artist or came to possess it
through labyrinthine channels. The Research Centre
for Artists’ Publications collects these works from far
and wide, and they give their visitors access to them.
Currently the Research Centre for Artists’
Publications has amassed over 30 archives, artists’
remains, holdings and collections with over 100,000
published art works from all over the world. This
unique assortment comprises some 25 different genres
of artists’ publications. The term “artist’s publication”
covers all forms of published art works, thus artists’
books, so-called multiples, book objects, artists’
newspapers and journals, and ephemera such as the
posters and invitation cards made by artists as well
as their photo-editions, postcards, stamps, stickers,
graphics, drawings, artists’ records and cassettes and
other audio media, multimedia publications in CD-
ROM or DVD format, and finally artists’ videos and
films.
Abteilung für Künstlerbücher in einem Museum
für zeitgenössische Kunst schuf das Neue Museum
Weserburg Bremen (heute Weserburg │Museum
für Moderne Kunst) 1991 den Ausgangspunkt für
das Studienzentrum. 1999 folgte mit dem Ankauf
des Archive for Small Press & Communication
(ASPC) die Gründung des Studienzentrums für
Künstlerpublikationen. Unter der Leitung von Dr.
Anne Thurmann-Jajes und in enger Zusammenarbeit
mit der Universität Bremen hat sich das
Studienzentrum seitdem zu einem der international
bedeutendsten Standorte für Künstlerpublikationen
entwickelt.
Vergleichbar einem „Museum in einem Museum“
bildet das Studienzentrum eine eigenständige
Abteilung in der Weserburg und wird von der
Universität Bremen und dem Museum gemeinsam
getragen. Im Studienzentrum sind Werke von ca.
3.000 internationalen Künstlerinnen und Künstlern
aus allen künstlerischen Strömungen seit den 1950er-
Jahren vereinigt. So sind neben Werken von PopArt-
Künstlern wie Andy Warhol und Ed Kienholz auch
With the first autonomous and publically displayed
section for artists’ books at a museum for
contemporary art, the New Museum Weserburg
Bremen (now called the Weserburg │Museum for
Modern Art) created in 1991 the initial basis for
the Research Centre. In 1999 the Archive for Small
Press & Communication (ASPC) was acquired,
laying the foundation for the Research Centre for
Artists’ Publications. Under the directorship of Dr.
Anne Thurmann-Jajes, and in close cooperation with
the University of Bremen, the Research Centre has
since become one of the most significant locations for
artists’ publications worldwide.
Much like a museum within a museum, the Research
Centre for Artists’ Publications is an independent
department at Weserburg, operated by both the
University of Bremen and the museum. At the
Research Centre, works by some 3000 international
artists representing artistic movements and trends
since the 1950s can be found. Thus, in addition
to works by pop artists like Andy Warhol and Ed
Kienholz, there are also publications from the
