CHAPTER 3 . WHERE TO STAY
atmosphere, come here. Accommodations are arranged around a
nicely cluttered courtyard, the right spot to visit and regroup before
diving back out onto Bourbon Street (whose main action begins just
a few feet away). Studios are adequate little rooms with kitchens and
bathrooms that appear grimy but are not. The Green Suite is as big
and grand as one would like, with huge, tall rooms, a second smaller
bedroom, a bigger bathroom, and a balcony overlooking Bourbon
Street. For price and location, it’s a heck of a deal, maybe the best in
the Quarter.
839 Bourbon St., New Orleans, LA 70116. & 504/525-3983 or 504/524-3621. 5
apts. $92 studio double; La Petite Suite $120 double; Green Suite $130 double,
$160 triple, $190 quad. AE, MC, V. In room: A/C, unstocked fridge, coffeemaker, iron.
Hôtel Provincial With flickering gas lamps, no elevators, no
fewer than five patios, and a tranquil setting, this feels less like a
hotel than a guesthouse. Both the quiet and the terrific service belie
its size, so it seems smaller and more intimate than it is. It’s also in
a good part of the Quarter on a quiet street off the beaten path. For
views of the river (plus higher ceilings), get a room on the third or
fourth floor of the back building. Some rooms have half-tester beds
(the furniture is a mix of antiques and reproductions). Regular
rooms are dark but roomy. Finally, with such a pretty pool area, it’s
a shame there isn’t much in the way of lounging or shade.
Hotel St. Marie Just a little above Bourbon Street on an otherwise
quiet street, this hotel could be on your list of “clean and safe
backup places to stay if my top choices are full.” Surrounding a
pretty, foliage-and-light bedecked courtyard with a small pool
(which you will bless the heavens for in summer), rooms are generic
New Orleans, with dark colors and standard-issue, mock-European
hotel furniture, and can smell moldy. Note that king rooms are
more pleasant than doubles, and corner rooms are more spacious,
which include the otherwise dinky bathrooms. Some rooms from
the original town house have balconies overlooking the street and
courtyard. Hallways are not numbered and can be dim, which could
make a tipsy late-night return a challenge.
827 Toulouse St., New Orleans, LA 70112. & 800/366-2743 or 504/561-8951. Fax
504/571-2802. www.hotelstmarie.com. 100 units. $49–$199 double, depending on
season. AE, DC, DISC, MC, V. Valet parking $22. Amenities: Restaurant; bar; room
service; laundry; dry cleaning. In room: A/C, TV, dataport, coffeemaker, hair dryer, iron.
