Welcome to Lifelong Learning

You have just taken the first step on the pathway to learning by choosing to read 

the Lifelong Learning prospectus. 

This prospectus lists courses available to you and gives you information about the 

centres we teach in and the support services and facilities we provide. These are 

our pre-planned courses. In addition, throughout the year, we offer other learning 

opportunities in response to local need. Watch out for further information. 

You may want to study towards a qualification that will help you to progress in 

your career or you might be one of the many learners who join our courses to 

learn a new skill and gain employment. 

We will support you on every step of your learning journey. You can read about 

some of our learners’ experiences and achievements alongside the information 

of the courses and services we offer. Some of our learners are proud to say that 

they have changed their lives by joining a Lifelong Learning course.

Mission Statement 

Head, Oldham Lifelong Learning Service 

Oldham Lifelong Learning Service seeks to create opportunities and reduce barriers enabling adults to 

study and learn. It positively works to provide local lifelong learning opportunities to enable all learners 

to improve their confidence, develop their knowledge, skills and creativity and to realise their potential. 

The Service will consult its communities, learners and partners to ensure that it responds to changing 

local needs and demands whilst continuously improving the quality of its provision. 

Ofsted Outstanding, Grade 1 

In June 2009 Ofsted carried out a formal inspection of Oldham Lifelong Learning Service. 

We were found to be Outstanding in all of the areas inspected.

Beacon 

The Service was awarded Learning and Skills Beacon status on 4 March 2010 in recognition 

of its exemplary work. The national Beacon awards are designed to recognise excellence 

and innovation within the further education system. The scheme highlights excellent learning 

providers that consistently deliver high-quality teaching and are supported by effective 

leadership and management. 

Matrix Standard of Quality 

The Matrix Standard is the national quality standard for any organisation that delivers 

information, advice and guidance on learning and work. In March 2010 the Service 

was successfully re-assessed to the standard, which it has held since 2004.

the learner, at the heart of all our work.

Welcome to our centres 

You will be welcomed to our centres by staff who will help you to choose your course, give 

information on support facilities and work with you to enable you to reach your goals. Courses are 

also taught in schools and community centres across the whole of Oldham. Please note that although 

we work to provide fully accessible learning, there may be some locations in a school or community 

centre where access is limited. 

Crèches are available at four of our main centres and many community locations to support daytime 

courses (subject to minimum numbers). Crèche charges are shown on page 9. Charges do not apply 

to Family Learning courses. 

Coldhurst – Refurbished and extended to a high standard, Coldhurst has an IT suite and a large hall 

in addition to light and airy classrooms. There is a small private car park. 

Failsworth – The Lifelong Learning Service is now based in the newly renovated Failsworth Town 

Hall. This building has been upgraded and extended to a high standard with bright modern rooms 

and facilities whilst still retaining many of the original features such as stained glass windows and 

period ceilings. The Library is also based in this building which gives learners easy access to books 

and research facilities. In addition to classrooms and community space, there is also a large function 

room which is available for hire. 

Oakbank – The majority of our cookery courses are delivered in our professional standard kitchen at 

Oakbank. There is a large, well equipped arts and crafts room and an IT suite alongside the roomy 

classrooms. There is a small refreshment area and limited car parking available. 

Oldham Library & Lifelong Learning Centre – Sharing a reception area with Gallery Oldham and 

Oldham Library, this exciting Centre has superb facilities including IT suites, wet and dry craft rooms, 

a photography dark room and a well equipped crèche. Disabled parking is available in front of the 

Centre – please telephone to arrange access. Public/pay and display parking is available: 

• Adjacent to the Centre on the Southgate Street side 

• Hobson Street multi-storey car park 

• Union Street parking spaces 

• Spindles multi-storey car park 

• Ten cycle racks are available on Greaves Street adjacent to the building, four on Southgate 

Street in front of the Gallery Oldham 

Pottery Centre – (Entrance – Firth Street) Pottery and ceramics courses take place in the Pottery 

Centre adjacent to the Lyceum Building, Oldham Centre. 

Saddleworth – Lee Street. Set in the heart of the community of Uppermill, this centre also deals with 

enquiries for Lifelong Learning classes at Saddleworth School. Please contact this Centre before 3pm 

for enquiries. 

Shaw – A true community centre built on the old Town Hall site and located in the heart of Shaw. An 

IT suite and a large hall complement the classrooms. 

Turf Lane, Chadderton – This busy centre includes a large hall, light and modern classrooms and an 

art room. The majority of the First Aid courses and many Childcare/Teaching Assistants courses are 

held here. There is a small refreshment area and a ‘drop-in’ book exchange. 

Werneth Park – Set in Werneth Park this historic listed building contains an IT suite, a large hall and 

spacious classrooms. There is a snack bar for drinks. A lift gives access to the first floor. The centre is 

just off the main route to Manchester.

Information, advice and guidance sessions 2012/2013 

Drop in to one of our sessions where you will be able to: 

• discuss which courses you would like to do and what you want to achieve with teaching staff. 

• meet a member of the Learner Support Team and talk in confidence if you think you might need additional 

support to complete your studies. They will ensure that any equipment or staffing you need is in place at the start 

of your course. 

• meet the Childcare team who can advise on childcare provision. See page 9 for time and location of crèches. 

• meet representatives from National Careers Service who give careers guidance. 

• undertake a skills check if this is required for your course. 

• enrol on to a course which meets your needs. 

All sessions are held at Oldham Library and Lifelong Learning Centre, Cultural Quarter, Greaves Street, Oldham OL1 1AL 

on the following dates: 

• Wednesday 8 August, 4 - 7pm, 

• Saturday 11 August, 10am - 2pm 

• Thursday 6 September, 4 - 7pm 

• Saturday 8 September, 10am - 2pm 

Skills check or interview sessions 

For some of our courses, particularly those with a qualification, you will need to meet a tutor for a skills check or interview 

before enrolling onto your course. This helps us to ensure that you are on the right level and type of course for your 

experience and current qualifications. It also introduces you to the way the Service works and the support and facilities 

we offer. 

Please ring the contact number given in the list of courses to make an appointment. 

Enrolment 

Once you have decided you would like to enrol onto a course, 

• If the course requires a pre-enrolment interview or skills check (indicated in the course list by “I”) 

Please telephone the contact number given in each section of the course lists. An appointment will then be 

arranged for you. 

• If the course does not require an interview or skills check but you would like some further information come to one 

of our advice and guidance sessions listed above or telephone the contact number given in each section of the 

course lists. If you choose to attend an advice and guidance session to talk to a member of staff please allow an 

hour of your time for this purpose. 

• If neither of the above applies, then just call into one of our centres and enrol. You must pay the course fee when 

you enrol. Details of costs are given on each page and information on fees and charges is on page 71. 

Telephone enrolment 

• You can enrol for some courses by telephone. 

• These are courses that do not need a pre-enrolment interview or skills check. 

• Telephone any of our centres and have your credit or debit card ready, along with the details of the course you 

wish to enrol onto and your own personal contact details. 

• You must pay the full course fee by credit or debit card when you enrol. Course fees are set out in the list of 

courses and further information on fees and charges is on page 71. 

• We cannot accept telephone enrolments for concessionary course fees as we need to see proof of your 

entitlement when you enrol. Further information on concessionary fees is on page 72.

Information, advice and support 

Information, advice and guidance is available to you at every step of your experience with Lifelong Learning, 

from your first telephone call or visit to a centre to meeting careers advisers to discuss the options open to you 

when you finish your course. 

Advice and guidance will help you to: 

• Choose the right course and suitable qualifications for your career and interests 

• Obtain course details including costs 

• Identify what practical and financial help is available to support your learning 

• Put together a package of courses 

• Plan a manageable workload 

• Identify progression routes on completion of your Lifelong Learning course 

• If we do not offer a course that suits your needs we will help you to explore options with other providers.

Learner Support 

Careers advice 

For help with your career plans, you can talk to advisers from the National Careers Service at 

1st floor, Medtia Place, 80 Union Street, Oldham OL1 1DJ 

Tel: 0161 621 9200. 

They can help with the process of job applications, such as preparing your CV (curriculum vitae). Staff from National 

Careers Service will be present at all our general Advice and Guidance sessions and will be available to provide careers 

advice on an ongoing basis once you are on your course. 

Discretionary Learner Support Fund 

If you have difficulty paying for the costs of course fees, books, materials, travel or childcare you may apply for funding 

from the Discretionary Learner Support Fund. Please ask for further information and an application form at enrolment or at 

any of our centres. 

Learning Support 

We are committed to inclusive learning and welcome all learners at Oldham Lifelong Learning Service. Our skilled and 

experienced Learning Support team enable learners to access our full range of provision. 

The Learning Support department has a wide range of adaptive technology and equipment to use in all of our Lifelong 

Learning centres. 

Learning support includes: 

• Alternative formats for course material and information e.g. large print 

• In-class support for learners whose first language is not English 

• Help with study skills 

• Individual support in the classroom 

Learning support can be provided for: 

• Hearing impairment 

• Visual Impairment 

• Dyslexia 

• Mental health issues 

• Physical disability 

• Other learning difficulties 

• Any other individual support needs 

Please talk to us before enrolling onto your course if you feel you might need additional learner support. This will help us 

to make sure any equipment or staffing is in place for the beginning of your course. 

If you want to bring your own support worker or personal assistant you must contact the Learning Support Team before 

enrolling so they can check that all health and safety issues have been addressed before you start your course.

Crèche and childcare provision 

There is a wide variety of childcare provision in Oldham. When you enrol with us we can tell you about all the childcare 

options including the crèches which we run to support some of our daytime classes and our Family Learning courses. 

Our crèches are open to children aged from six weeks to seven years. All of our crèches have qualified staff and we follow 

the national standards for crèches. You will need to register your child(ren) when you enrol for your course. Please note 

that crèches are subject to a minimum number of children attending and places are limited. 

A crèche may be merged or closed if enrolments do not reach the minimum number within the first three weeks. Please 

check that a crèche is available before enrolling for your course. 

Crèche charges: £3.35 per session if you are paying a full course fee. 

Free to those on concessions. 

Free for all Family Learning courses. 

If you incur childcare costs related to your attendance on our courses you may be able to get financial support to meet 

these costs through the Discretionary Learner Support Fund. Please ask for details at your advice and guidance interview 

or call into any of our centres and ask the reception staff.

Most courses in this brochure are funded by the Skills Funding Agency (SFA). The SFA have made changes to concession 

eligibility for courses with a qualification which affects the contribution required from learners.

Are you looking for a qualification? 

Are you searching for a job?

Would you like to improve your skills and confidence? 

Oldham Lifelong Learning Service can offer you indivdual advice and guidance to help you with your employment related 

needs. Some examples of specific courses are listed below, and you will find full details of these in the course listings 

within this brochure. 

Courses with a qualification 

Maths and English – gaining national qualifications 

Are you looking to improve your Maths or English skills? We have a range of courses available which are held throughout 

the week (Monday – Saturday) that enable you to study at your own pace. These courses are ideal for brushing up on 

your skills or gaining a certificate in Maths and English to help you improve your employment prospects. 

Fast track ESOL for work (English for speakers of other languages) 

If you are on Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) or Employment Support Allowance (ESA) you may like to attend an Intensive 

speaking and listening course for 1 day a week over an eight week period. On completion, there will be a further 

opportunity to progress onto an Intensive reading and writing course 2 days a week over an eight week period. These 

courses will give you the speaking, listening, reading and writing skills needed to improve your job prospects. 

Information Technology 

We have a broad range of IT courses to suit absolute beginners as well as those ready for full level 2 qualifications. In 

addition, short courses in keyboard skills, internet, email, desktop publishing, spreadsheets and databases will enable 

you to gain specific skills. Qualification courses are available at entry level, level 1 and level 2. Our ITQ workshops can 

accommodate learners working to a level 1 qualification and you can join these at any stage of the year. 

ICT, Skills for Jobs 

A weekly workshop that will equip you with the skills to search online for jobs, create a CV or complete a job application 

and use email. You may also get your skills accredited and gain an ITQ1 unit certificate or NCFE Award in Making 

Progress. 

ICT, Award in Making Progress 

This course will enable you to improve your ICT skills. You will assess your current skills and set appropriate ICT goals that 

you would like to achieve. 

Computerised accounts using Sage Pitmans, Level 1 

A course with a qualification where you will learn basic accounting theory alongside computer skills using Sage Line 50 

v12. 

ICT, First award in ICT (pre level 1) 

A course with a qualification which comprises four units: word processing, searching for information, graphs and charts 

and using email. This course is a stepping stone towards ITQ1. 

ITQ1 certificate 

You will start on the Pre-ITQ1 4 week course and then join the ITQ1 course. This is a qualification with a choice of units 

including: keyboarding, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, PowerPoint presentations, desk top publishing, email 

and internet. This qualification is recognised by employers nationally and is ideal for improving existing job performance, 

finding a new job, or simply using today’s technology more efficiently. 

Workshop learners will enrol on a roll on roll off basis completing the course within a maximum of 80 hours. This course is 

a stepping stone towards ITQ2. 

ITQ2 

You will start on the Pre-ITQ2 4 week course and then join the ITQ2 course. This is a full level 2 qualification which will give 

you enhanced ICT skills. You will use European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) units to achieve an ECDL Extra full level 

2 qualification.

You will start on the Pre-NVQ1 for 10 hours before joining this course. This NVQ is a job-ready qualification which will 

equip you with the skills and knowledge required to work in an office or in industry. You will learn how to work and 

communicate using a simulated business environment. 

First aid at work certificate 

This 3 day course is usually taken by people in employment who require a first aid qualification. It is valid for 3 years. You 

must complete a 2 day requalification course at the end of year 3. The fee includes the course book. Under the HSE 

(Health and Safety Executive) regulations this allows you to be a first aider in the workplace. 

First aid at work certificate requalification 

This course requalifies those with a First aid at work certificate. You must have a current first aid at work certificate that is 

nearly 3 years old and is due to expire. This 2 day course updates the full certificate and requalifies you as a First aider for 

another 3 years. You must show your current First Aid at work certificate before being allowed to enrol on this course. 

Emergency first aid at work 

This one day course enables people to take the first steps to deal with illness or a medical emergency in the workplace. 

You will be assessed throughout the course. The fee includes the course book. Under Health and Safety Executive 

regulations this allows you to be an emergency first aider in the workplace. 

First aid for people working with or caring for children 

This 2 day course meets Ofsted requirements. It is specifically designed to help parents or carers who are working with 

children. It provides training in the first steps to deal with illness or a medical emergency involving a child. No formal 

assessment will be carried out. 

Preparing to teach in the lifelong learning sector (PTLLS) 

This course is for anyone interested in training and teaching adults. It is an introductory course that all new teachers in the 

learning and skills sector must complete. No prior teaching experience is required but you must have a level 3 (‘A’ level or 

equivalent) specialist subject qualification and at least a level 2 in literacy. 

Photography City and Guilds levels 1 and 2 

These courses cover the core techniques of photography, encouraging creativity and confidence. They are suitable for 

those with a personal interest wanting to pursue photography as a career option. 

Caring for children, Entry level 3 award 

This course is aimed at people with no previous experience and who are considering working towards a career in 

childcare. 

Caring for children, Level 1 award 

Aimed at people who wish to begin a career in childcare the course looks at child development and explores how play is 

important to a child’s learning and development. 

Employability skills - Developing skills to work in a school, Level 1 award 

This course is aimed at people who wish to begin a career as a teaching assistant and will develop your employability 

skills alongside exploring the role of a support worker in school. 

Support Work in Schools Level 2 award 

This qualification is suitable for learners wishing to progress onto level 2 but who are not yet volunteering or employed in 

a school. This course is an introduction to the information and knowledge needed to work in a school environment and 

can apply to a variety of support roles. No practical placement required. You must possess a Level 2 Literacy qualification 

Should be (GCSE Grade A – C or equivalent) 

Supporting teaching and learning in schools Level 2 certificate 

This qualification will enable the learner to develop the knowledge and skills needed when supporting teaching and 

learning in the school environment. It is suitable for learners working or volunteering in roles that support pupils’ learning 

including teaching assistants, learning support assistants and special needs assistants. 


This qualification will provide learners with an understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly 

with children and young people in a school environment under minimal supervision. 

Youth work practice, Level 2 certificate 

The Level 2 Certificate in Youth Work Practice is designed to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required to 

competently fulfil the role of an Assistant Youth Support Worker. This course is suitable for participants wishing to develop 

their skills and practice in working with young people enabling you to link theory to practice.

Substance misuse awareness, Level 1 award 

This qualification develops an awareness of the impact of substance misuse on an individual, society and services. It will 

identify the most commonly misused substances, the effects and dangers of substance misuse, the services available and 

the impact of substance misuse on communities, society and how this is reported by the media. 

Sexual health awareness, Level 1 award 

In this course, learners will explore the different aspects of sexual health in relation to puberty and changing bodies, 

safeguarding children and young people and personal safety. You will also develop an awareness of how to discuss these 

issues with children and young people. 

Interpersonal skills, Level 1 award 

This qualification in Interpersonal Skills is ideal for those working in situations where communication and one to one 

interviews or interactions take place. The increased self-awareness resulting from the training enables relationship building 

in a more general sense. 

Counselling skills, Level 2 certificate 

This qualification gives learners the opportunity to investigate the knowledge and skills needed to use counselling skills 

and engage in a helping interaction appropriately. It will develop your counselling skills and your understanding of the 

different approaches involved. You will also develop your awareness of your own self development. 

Food Safety for Health and Social Care, Early Years and Childcare Settings, 

Level 2 award 

This course will develop the knowledge needed when working with food in health and social care and early years and 

childcare settings. You do not need access to the workplace; this is a knowledge only unit. There are no examinations to 

take; as you will produce a portfolio of evidence. 

Preparing to work in adult social care, Level 1 award 

This qualification develops the skills and knowledge required for working in the health and social care sector. The units 

covered give an overview and an understanding of the sector. 

Mental health awareness, Level 1 award 

Raise your understanding of mental health issues. Particularly useful for those working in the voluntary and community 

sector and for anyone who works with the general public. 

Making progress, Entry 3 award 

In this qualification you will identify your strengths and areas for improvement, identify goals you can work towards, and 

carry out activities to work towards achieving the agreed goal. You will then review your progress and whether the goal 

has been achieved. 

British sign language (BSL), Entry level 3 certificate 

This course provides you with an introduction to signing and receiving to Entry level 3 and equips you with the knowledge 

to progress to a level 1 qualification course. 

British sign language (BSL), Level 1 certificate 

This course provides you with skills in signing and receiving to level 1 and equips you with the necessary skills and 

knowledge to progress to a level 2 qualification course. You will also learn about the deaf culture and community and help 

you develop self confidence in using BSL to communicate with non hearing people in a wide range of everyday situations. 

British sign language (BSL), Level 2 certificate 

Further develop the skills and knowledge you have acquired at level 1 and increase your confidence in communicating 

with non hearing people in a range of settings. You will attend Oldham Deaf Club and other organisations to enhance your 

signing and receiving skills. 


Courses without a qualification 

Skills for Jobs 

A weekly workshop that will equip you with the skills to search online for jobs, create a CV and use email. You may also 

get your skills accredited and gain an ITQ1 unit certificate or NCFE Award in Making Progress. 

Computerised accounts, introduction to Sage 

This course will introduce you to the Computerised Accounts Package Sage Line 50 v12. It will prepare you to enrol on 

the Sage Pitmans level 1 accredited course. You will gain an in-house certificate listing your achievements. 

Photoshop with digital images 

Using Photoshop CS2 you will learn how to alter, improve and repair digital images. From this course you may progress 

onto photography courses. You will gain an in-house certificate listing your achievements. 

Computers, introduction to 

Start at the very beginning. Switch on, start up, learn effective use of the mouse and keyboard, carry out basic word 

processing, access the internet and print and save work. You will gain an in-house certificate listing your achievements. 

Computers, improve your skills 

For some this course will be a continuation from ‘Computers, introduction to’. Build your confidence and learn additional 

word and internet skills as well as how to email. You will gain an in-house certificate listing your achievements. 

Online Media 

This course will increase your knowledge of online shopping and banking. It will introduce you to social media sites such 

as Facebook and teach you more advanced email functions. 

Be creative 

If you have a creative skill (dressmaking, cake decoration, floristry etc) or have considered developing such skills as a 

career option or self employment opportunity, you may want to consider one of our many creative skills courses – see 

pages 16-22 and 28-31. 

Assertiveness 

Develop confidence in your ability to deal with day to day situations positively and without conflict. Good skills to build in 

relation to job interviews and establishing relationships in new job situations.

As part of Oldham Co-operative Council we are committed to working with the Neighbourhood and District Partnerships 

to provide learning opportunities for local people. We want to make our courses as responsive as possible to changing 

social and economic needs and aspirations. We can offer flexible provision tailored to meet the requirements of different 

groups and individuals.

National Careers Service, Libraries and housing associations, to build strong links with the local community and identify

Adult English and Maths 

Our classes offer you the chance to brush up on your English or Maths skills and gain nationally recognised 

qualifications up to Level 2. From September 2012 we will also be offering Functional Skills qualifications up to 

Level 2. 

Before joining a class you will need a skills check to make sure that you enter at the right level of study for you. Skills 

checks are held frequently throughout the year. You can request an individual meeting or join our regular skills check 

sessions. For the online and blended learning courses you will need to have an online skills check and tutorial.

Michael Hodson 

Michael left school with no qualifications as he was given 

little opportunity to learn. Since joining Oldham Council, 

Michael has completed a range of courses with Lifelong 

Learning, while showing determination and conviction in 

applying himself to self improvement. 

The courses have taken two years to complete and 

since enrolling on them, his managers have said he has 

become an asset to Oldham Council. During the first 

year, he passed Entry Level 3 in English and Maths, the 

first qualifications Michael had ever achieved. Spurred 

on by his success, Michael went on to study his Level 1 

in Maths over a 9 month period. He then took his Level 

1 in English which took another 12 months to achieve. 

Michael is currently studying Level 2 English and Maths 

and has just been accepted on a Level 2 Horticultural 

Adult Apprenticeship course. 

Michael was nominated for the National Institute of 

Adult Continuing Education Adult Learners Award for 

his dedication to improving himself to the best of his 

ability. He was also selected for a regional award at the 

Powerhouse Library in Moss Side Manchester.

Craig Hutton - 

Photography Learner 

Craig Hutton came to Oldham Lifelong Learning to 

gain new photography skills in which he has had a 

longstanding interest. 

He enrolled on City & Guilds Photography Level 1 and 

was hooked. He not only completed and achieved 

Level 1, he then went on to complete Level 2. His work 

is of such a high standard he was selected from many 

learners who had sent in photos for the front cover of the

Craig also undertook an assignment in his own time to 

track the progress of the refurbishment of the Failsworth 

Town Hall and Lifelong Learning Centre during last year. 

His work was shown to the Leader of the Council and 

other dignitaries at the official opening of the building. 

Craig is now self-employed in photography. He has set 

up his own business on the internet and has taken many 

commissions for work, the latest being a prestigious rock 

concert. 

Craig says: “It’s amazing, I never thought I would ever 

have my own web site (GI Photography) and could earn 

a living doing something I really love. Lifelong Learning 

rocks!” 

Wider Family Learning 

Wider Family Learning courses provide opportunities 

for mums, dads, grandparents and carers to rediscover 

how much fun they can have with their children. Families 

can learn new skills and develop strategies and ideas for 

playing and working together in a creative and focused 

way.

Achieve the qualifications you need to work with children and young people in a teaching assistant or childcare capacity. 

You will need to demonstrate proof of a standard of literacy adequate to meet the demands of the course. If you have 

relevant qualifications and substantive experience of working in a childcare or school setting you may be able to enrol 

onto a higher level course subject to an informal interview with the Curriculum Manager or Programme Leader.

I have been fortunate enough to enjoy learning and 

development all through my career, in a variety of different 

jobs learning a wide range of knowledge and skills. 

Immediately prior to starting this course I was 

unemployed for several months despite applying for lots 

of jobs, including quite a few as a Teaching Assistant. 

It was a bit of a step for me getting back into learning, 

especially via evening classes. 

A robust career assessment highlighted that my range of 

skills, experience, and values would be ideal for a career 

in teaching, teaching assistant and similar roles. 

This assessment confirmed my “gut feeling” about what 

I next wanted to do with my career. I secured a voluntary 

role in a nursery/primary school to gain experience and 

knowledge – before starting to apply for jobs in this sector 

– without any success. 

Employers were clearly stating in their vacancy adverts 

that they wanted people with, or working towards 

Teaching Assistant qualifications, and some experience 

– which probably explained why I wasn’t having much 

success with my applications. 

And that is why I started studying on this course. 

When I started the course I discovered that there were 19 

people on it – 18 women and me. I wondered whether 

I was actually wasting my time in what clearly seemed, 

and I think is, a female dominated profession. That said, 

people were telling me that schools “were crying out for 

male teachers/TAs”. I decided to stick at it. 

The experience of the course has been excellent. The 

tutor has been excellent, keeping the training informal 

enough to be enjoyable and fun, but focussed enough 

to keep on track and learn. She has worked hard to 

make me feel totally included, and even though I was 

the only male student (which may be off putting for some 

potential male learners) it has been a very good learning 

environment for everyone.

The course has changed my life enormously. I have 

secured one of, if not the best job I’ve ever had in my 

life – and I have had some very interesting and satisfying 

jobs during my career. I am now working as a Teaching 

Assistant supporting children with special educational 

needs in a large secondary school. 

I have been on lots of high quality training/development 

during my career, some of it provided by some of the 

most expensive and professional training consultancies in 

the UK. In terms of quality and content, this course is on 

a par with some of the best I have experienced. 

I would especially recommend it to any men out there 

thinking of looking for a job/career as a teaching assistant 

or similar role- even though they may be outnumbered by 

women on the course.

course that starts with the basics or one that teaches skills to make more adventurous dishes. Enjoy

Lizzie Hehir, Umar Nasheen, Karen Lees and 

Janette Armstrong are a sample of students who 

completed the Level 2 Certificate in Counselling 

and who want to progress on to Level 3 Diploma in 

Counselling. 

Janette says, ‘The course gave me confidence, it was 

a very positive experience and I learnt a lot about myself 

as well as counselling. I use what I have learnt on a 

daily basis with myself, my children and partner, family 

and friends. Once I decided what my career path was 

Lifelong Learning was the obvious choice for me to take 

to fulfil my learning. It helped that I was studying with 

a tutor whom I had previously completed courses with, 

as this made it easy to settle in. I cannot say anything

course. I adapted easily and found I could put time 

and commitment into the course. It was a very positive 

experience for me and a stepping stone to my chosen

changed how I interact with others. I am now a lot more

am on the way to my chosen career and would definitely

Karen is a single mother who began taking courses with 

Oldham Lifelong Learning Service in 2011. Karen says;

Umar had been to college and university prior to 

entering training with the Service in 2011. She was 

interested in learning about being empathic and other 

skills which she could use in her daily life to help others. 

Umar does voluntary work with Victim Support and 

found the course very useful in helping her relate to 

service users at Victim Support. 

‘I adapted to the course easily, due to previous courses 

I had done. I was organised and found it a positive 

experience. I found the tutor to be very helpful and

NCFE Level 3 Award 

This course is an introductory teaching qualification for anyone interested in training and teaching adults. It will prepare 

learners for teaching in a wide range of contexts and does not require learners to be teaching. It is a valuable introduction 

to the theory and practice of delivering learning. 

The aims of the course are to: 

• Understand roles, responsibilities in lifelong learning 

• Understand inclusive learning and teaching in lifelong learning 

• Use inclusive learning and teaching approaches in lifelong learning 

• Understand principles of assessment in lifelong learning

How to enrol: 

Call in to your nearest Lifelong Learning centre to pick up an

and time. You will need to allow approximately half an hour for your 

appointment. If you decide to enrol straightaway you should allow 

half an hour for this too. 

Mohammed Azram 

Mohammed Azram came to the UK in the early 

60s with a few friends. They settled in Birmingham. 

At that time, the steel industry was booming and 

he found employment straight away. He was 

very pleased with his achievement and thought of 

himself as lucky. 

“I could operate all functional machines e.g. 

welding, casting, grinding etc. Even though I never 

went to school in my home country, I never had 

problems with communication at work and outside 

the work environment. However, when the industry 

collapsed in late 80s I struggled to find work and 

decided to come and live in Oldham and found 

employment in a local factory”. 

Mohammed could speak English but had never 

learnt to read or write. “I never felt a need to learn 

the English language as I felt capable of fulfilling my 

own needs and managed to support my family”. 

Now at 56, Mohammed has found himself 

unemployed. “I want to work because all my 

life I have worked in factories. I can operate 

most industrial machines but now when I go 

the jobcentre they ask for English language 

certificates.” 

He enrolled on the course in January 2012. 

Since the start of his class, he has progressed 

immensely and completes most literacy tasks 

independently. He displays an extremely positive 

learning attitude towards his work. He achieved 

a 100% attendance and punctuality record. He 

enjoys coming to classes, doing his homework 

and especially likes to share his experience on the 

topics and life in the UK. All the other learners 

benefit from his contribution. 

“I used to feel useless but since starting these 

classes, I feel that I can achieve something. I was 

reluctant to join college because I thought it was 

for young people and felt out of place attending 

college. But Oldham Lifelong Learning at the 

library is very different and I don’t feel overwhelmed 

about it. My classroom environment is warm. I 

learn with other people from different countries 

and we talk about different cultures. In my course, 

I have discussed topics such as problems in my 

neighbourhood, recycling, employment and the 

NHS and the royal family. I have learnt so many 

things; reading, writing, computer skills and other 

things.” 

“I am very happy that Oldham Lifelong Learning 

is in Oldham, it has given me opportunities to get 

a certificate. I’m not sure about getting a job in 

the near future but I am sure to continue with my 

English classes. I am grateful to have access to 

learning, my life is different and meaningful now. I 

have made new friends and during breaks we joke 

and talk about things”.

Family Learning offers a range of free courses for 

mums, dads, grandparents, carers and children. 

Courses are held at times to meet parents’/carers’ 

needs. A free crèche is available at many venues.

Improving Literacy with 

newspapers project 

The Family Learning team and The Oldham Academy 

North have been working with the Oldham Chronicle 

on a Family Literacy/Media project. 

Parents, carers and children from the school have 

been learning about newspapers and the skills 

required. The course, which included a visit to the 

Chronicle offices, has enabled them to improve 

their speaking, listening, reading and writing. Adults 

and children have used their new-found skills to 

interview staff and pupils and produce stories for the 

newspaper. 

Parents said: 

“I have learned so much, I can now help with 

homework... 

“I didn’t know learning could be so much fun! And I 

got a qualification.. 

“This course has really opened my eyes as to how 

much my son does in school...

Do you have an appropriately trained workforce? Would you or one of your team know what to do 

in an emergency? First Aid doesn’t take long to learn but can help to save lives. Our First Aid

This one day course enables people to take the first steps to deal with illness or a medical emergency in the workplace.

Complementary therapies an introduction 

This short introductory course allows learners to develop an awareness of complementary therapies and the benefits this 

can bring to an individual. In each session you will explore a different aspect of complementary therapies which includes 

aromatherapy, Indian head massage and reflexology. You can then progress onto the more in depth courses around each 

topic. 


Reflexology 

Reflexology helps to balance and strengthen the body’s natural immune and healing systems by using gentle pressure to 

specific points on the feet and hands. You will learn a routine for a full reflexology treatment via weekly practical sessions.

This compulsory course will introduce you to the computerised accounts package Sage Line 50 v 12. It will prepare you 

to enrol on the Sage Level 1 accredited course. 






Computerised accounts, Sage Level 2 skills 

You will have completed the Level 1 Computerised Accounts qualification before enrolling on this course. Build on skills 

learned at level 1. There will be an option to have this course accredited but this will incur an additional exam fee. 


Diane Bell 

For 12 years, Diane worked as an 

admin assistant and receptionist 

but was made redundant in 

December 2011. Although Diane 

used many IT skills she didn’t have 

any qualifications and wanted to 

improve her job prospects. She was 

advised by the Job Centre to enrol 

on the Skills for Jobs course and has 

successfully gained an ITQ Level 1 

qualification. 

Diane was familiar with Sage and

Joan Gilsenan 

Joan was self employed for 9 years until 2009 and then 

gave this up to work for Premier Ironmongery Ltd as 

an administrator. She always had good organisational 

and administration skills but was unfortunately made 

redundant in May 2012. Joan decided she needed to 

revamp her CV and needed a little help to showcase her 

talents. She came to the Skills for Jobs group that is 

specifically for unemployed people who need to create 

or update their CV With a little help from the tutor, who 

enabled her to identify the many employability skills 

that she had, Joan soon created a CV and decided to 

stay on the course to get some ICT qualifications. Joan 

has always worked in an office environment but never 

had any ICT qualifications and was pleased to have the 

opportunity to join the course to change this. 

Joan soon passed her Word Processing exam and 

started on her Spreadsheets next. However within a few 

weeks she gained employment with Hills Panels Product 

Ltd in the office as Sales Administrator. This was due to 

her improved CV and better job searching skills 

Joan recommends the Skills for Jobs workshop to 

anyone who is on Job Seekers Allowance. She says 

the tutors are excellent, patient and ensure that the 

CV helps you to gain the right job. Other people in the 

group continued their learning and gained their ICT 

qualifications. This is something Joan intends to do in the 

future. 

The Skills for Jobs workshop is available free of charge to 

anyone claiming Job Seekers Allowance.

Enjoy learning the language and culture of another country in friendly, stimulating classes. 

Learning a new language is an enjoyable and rewarding experience, but it needs time and a 

significant amount of motivation and effort on your part. You will need to do homework – it’s essential! 

Language learning is not a “quick-fix” process. You will gradually develop confidence and skills. You 

need patience and determination to make progress. 

We offer a range of courses and levels to suit your needs. We have courses with and without formal 

qualifications. Our beginners’ courses which do not include an examination are divided into three 

terms over one year. The first part of the course is called ‘Introduction to ...’, the second is ‘Move on 

in...’ and the third term is ‘Step up in...’ . For further information ask for a course information sheet for 

details of course content. 

Please use our learner guide tables overleaf as a guide 

to the appropriate level for you. 

If you are a language learner progressing from one level to 

the next with Oldham Lifelong Learning you will be able to 

enrol at any centre by bringing along the Progression Form

Courses without a qualification run for 30 weeks in total, fees indicated below are for 10 weeks per 

term - Autumn, Spring and Summer terms complete a 30 week programme. 

The major focus is on spoken language, supported as necessary by listening, reading and 

writing. Years 1 to 3 include topics such as introductions, dates, time, food and drink, shopping, 

accommodation, directions and travel, services and emergencies. In conversation classes topics vary 

with the needs and interests of the group. These courses do not have an examination. 

For most beginners it is necessary to join the course at the start of Year 1 and progress through the 

different stages. It is recommended that you do not begin studying at the second or third term of a

This Level 2 Certificate in Youth Work Practice is designed to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required to 

competently fulfil the role of an Assistant Youth Support Worker.

Community groups using Lifelong Learning centres 

In addition to Lifelong Learning classes many community groups meet in Lifelong Learning Centres. Community learning 

activities include keep fit, yoga, art, drama, dancing, singing, music, sports groups and many more. Group members pay 

a yearly membership fee to the Service for the use of accommodation and facilities. A weekly charge may also be payable 

to the group leader/organiser. 

Many people take part in community group activities for enjoyment and for personal fulfilment or intellectual, creative 

and physical stimulation. The Government recognises that community learning can transform individual lives, helping to 

build confidence and add to personal fulfilment. In some cases it can be an important stepping stone to further learning, 

qualifications and more rewarding work.

How to pay for your course 

In full 

If your course fee is less than £60 you must make full 

payment at enrolment. Your position on the course is not 

secure until payment has been made. 

By instalments 

If your course fee amounts to £60 or more, we can accept 

payment in three equal instalments over three consecutive 

months via a debit or credit card. If you withdraw from 

your course you will be charged the outstanding balance 

of the full cost of the course. 

By employer 

If your employer is paying for your course you must 

provide a letter of confirmation on letter-headed paper 

from your employer. We will send them an invoice. 

By telephone 

You will be able to pay over the phone (by credit/debit card 

only) if your course does not require pre-course advice and 

guidance and if you are paying the full fee. Please ring any 

centre to enrol and pay. 

Examination/accreditation fees 

Courses with a qualification (accredited courses) have an 

examination or accreditation fee. This fee is included in 

the course fee for the majority of courses. Where there are 

separate examination charges you will pay for these during 

the course. You will not able to enrol onto any accredited 

courses unless you intend to achieve the award and 

complete the course. This is a requirement of our external 

funding agreement with the Skills Funding Agency. If you 

wish to do a course without a qualification there is a wide 

range of options in the listings where you enrol each term. 

Books and equipment 

You may need stationery, textbooks or other materials 

for some subjects. Please refer to the course information 

sheet or ask your tutor at your first class before buying any 

items. You may be able to borrow books from the Library.

Concessionary status 

Learners entitled to a concessionary rate do not pay any 

fees for qualification courses that are funded by the Skills 

Funding Agency. If you are in receipt of a benefit, proof 

of this must be shown when you enrol for your course.

All our courses are for adults aged 19 years and over. 

Circumstances that qualify for a concessionary rate on 

qualification courses with codes beginning with letter V. 

You are: 

• in receipt of Job Seekers Allowance

Specialist courses/workshops 

and small groups 

Specialist courses are offered at a higher hourly rate. 

There is a partial concession on these courses for people 

in receipt of the benefits shown above. 

We also run some cost recovery courses. These are set at 

a competitive rate but have no concessions. 

Refunds 

We only give a refund if your class closes or if you give 

advance notice before the course start date that you will 

not be taking up your place on a course. 

Other requests for refunds will only be considered in 

exceptional circumstances. There is more information on 

this in the Policy and Procedure for Fees and refund of 

fees. 

Although we will do our best to provide our courses and 

services as published, we may need to alter, postpone or 

cancel courses or services or any aspects of them without 

incurring liability. We make every effort to find a suitable 

alternative for you should this happen. For example, a 

course may close or merge because we have not enrolled 

enough learners.

Hints and tips to help you now that 

you have chosen your course 

Getting organised … 

• Make a note of your class day, time and location. 

Keep the receipt you were given when you paid for your course and bring it to your first class. 

• Make a note of the telephone number of the centre your class is based in, just in case you need to let us know if 

you will not be able to attend. 

• Try to arrive a few minutes early at your first class. Important information is given then, such as whether you need 

to buy any books or equipment, or what will be provided for you. You will meet fellow learners for the first time 

and begin to get to know them. 

• Over the first three weeks your tutor will carry out an induction programme to ensure you are fully briefed about 

your course content, health and safety procedures and to help you to settle in. 

• Take a notepad and pen with you that you always use just for your class. Jot down all of your notes in it 

throughout your course and then everything will be kept in one place. 

• Don’t invest in anything else before your first class, unless you are attending an arts and crafts or cookery class 

and have been advised to bring your own items (such as your own cloths for cookery). 

• You might need to set additional time aside for working at home. Your tutor will tell you during induction of 

approximate time requirements, to enable you to organise your additional study time. For example, you may be 

given homework. You might also want to work on a project in your own time in addition to the time you spend in 

your class.
