Adult English and Maths
Our classes offer you the chance to brush up on your English or Maths skills and gain nationally recognised
qualifications up to Level 2. From September 2012 we will also be offering Functional Skills qualifications up to
Level 2.
Before joining a class you will need a skills check to make sure that you enter at the right level of study for you. Skills
checks are held frequently throughout the year. You can request an individual meeting or join our regular skills check
sessions. For the online and blended learning courses you will need to have an online skills check and tutorial.

We offer a variety of ways to learn including:-

Ways to learn? When?
Fast Track 2 sessions or more per week a.m., p.m. and evenings.
Concentrate on improving your Maths or English skills in a shorter period of
time or if you want extra support.
Ideal if you are preparing to take an examination.
Once a week 1 session a week , Mon – Sat am, pm evenings
Intensive (Level 1 / Level 2) Booster classes for existing learners to prepare for exams.
Online (Level 1 / Level 2) Courses for those that prefer working online or are unable to attend classes
on a regular basis.
Blended ( Entry 3 Level 1 / Level 2) A combination of classroom based and online learning.
Courses and skills checks are held at Oldham Library and Lifelong Learning Centre and other venues across the
borough throughout the year.

Michael Hodson
Michael left school with no qualifications as he was given
little opportunity to learn. Since joining Oldham Council,
Michael has completed a range of courses with Lifelong
Learning, while showing determination and conviction in
applying himself to self improvement.
The courses have taken two years to complete and
since enrolling on them, his managers have said he has
become an asset to Oldham Council. During the first
year, he passed Entry Level 3 in English and Maths, the
first qualifications Michael had ever achieved. Spurred
on by his success, Michael went on to study his Level 1
in Maths over a 9 month period. He then took his Level
1 in English which took another 12 months to achieve.
Michael is currently studying Level 2 English and Maths
and has just been accepted on a Level 2 Horticultural
Adult Apprenticeship course.
Michael was nominated for the National Institute of
Adult Continuing Education Adult Learners Award for
his dedication to improving himself to the best of his
ability. He was also selected for a regional award at the
Powerhouse Library in Moss Side Manchester.
