Adult English and Maths<br />
Our classes offer you the chance to brush up <strong>on</strong> your English or Maths skills and gain nati<strong>on</strong>ally recognised<br />
qualificati<strong>on</strong>s up to Level 2. From September 2012 we will also be offering Functi<strong>on</strong>al Skills qualificati<strong>on</strong>s up to<br />
Level 2.<br />
Before joining a class you will need a skills check to make sure that you enter at the right level of study for you. Skills<br />
checks are held frequently throughout the year. You can request an individual meeting or join our regular skills check<br />
sessi<strong>on</strong>s. For the <strong>on</strong>line and blended learning courses you will need to have an <strong>on</strong>line skills check and tutorial.<br />

Ways to learn? When?<br />
Fast Track 2 sessi<strong>on</strong>s or more per week a.m., p.m. and evenings.<br />
C<strong>on</strong>centrate <strong>on</strong> improving your Maths or English skills in a shorter period of<br />
time or if you want extra support.<br />
Ideal if you are preparing to take an examinati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
Once a week 1 sessi<strong>on</strong> a week , M<strong>on</strong> – Sat am, pm evenings<br />
Intensive (Level 1 / Level 2) Booster classes for existing learners to prepare for exams.<br />
Online (Level 1 / Level 2) Courses for those that prefer working <strong>on</strong>line or are unable to attend classes<br />
<strong>on</strong> a regular basis.<br />
Blended ( Entry 3 Level 1 / Level 2) A combinati<strong>on</strong> of classroom based and <strong>on</strong>line learning.<br />
Courses and skills checks are held at <strong>Oldham</strong> Library and Lifel<strong>on</strong>g <strong>Learning</strong> Centre and other venues across the<br />
borough throughout the year.<br />

Michael Hods<strong>on</strong><br />
Michael left school with no qualificati<strong>on</strong>s as he was given<br />
little opportunity to learn. Since joining <strong>Oldham</strong> <strong>Council</strong>,<br />
Michael has completed a range of courses with Lifel<strong>on</strong>g<br />
<strong>Learning</strong>, while showing determinati<strong>on</strong> and c<strong>on</strong>victi<strong>on</strong> in<br />
applying himself to self improvement.<br />
The courses have taken two years to complete and<br />
since enrolling <strong>on</strong> them, his managers have said he has<br />
become an asset to <strong>Oldham</strong> <strong>Council</strong>. During the first<br />
year, he passed Entry Level 3 in English and Maths, the<br />
first qualificati<strong>on</strong>s Michael had ever achieved. Spurred<br />
<strong>on</strong> by his success, Michael went <strong>on</strong> to study his Level 1<br />
in Maths over a 9 m<strong>on</strong>th period. He then took his Level<br />
1 in English which took another 12 m<strong>on</strong>ths to achieve.<br />
Michael is currently studying Level 2 English and Maths<br />
and has just been accepted <strong>on</strong> a Level 2 Horticultural<br />
Adult Apprenticeship course.<br />
Michael was nominated for the Nati<strong>on</strong>al Institute of<br />
Adult C<strong>on</strong>tinuing Educati<strong>on</strong> Adult Learners Award for<br />
his dedicati<strong>on</strong> to improving himself to the best of his<br />
ability. He was also selected for a regi<strong>on</strong>al award at the<br />
Powerhouse Library in Moss Side Manchester.
