Improving Literacy with
newspapers project
The Family Learning team and The Oldham Academy
North have been working with the Oldham Chronicle
on a Family Literacy/Media project.
Parents, carers and children from the school have
been learning about newspapers and the skills
required. The course, which included a visit to the
Chronicle offices, has enabled them to improve
their speaking, listening, reading and writing. Adults
and children have used their new-found skills to
interview staff and pupils and produce stories for the
newspaper.
Parents said:
“I have learned so much, I can now help with
homework...
“I didn’t know learning could be so much fun! And I
got a qualification..
“This course has really opened my eyes as to how
much my son does in school...
“It has encouraged me to go onto other courses,
which will help improve my job prospects... “Every
parent should do this course.”
Wider Family Learning
Wider Family Learning courses provide
opportunities for mums, dads, grandparents
and carers to rediscover how much fun they
can have with their children. Families can learn
new skills and develop strategies and ideas for
playing and working together in a creative and
focused way.
Bite-size learning fun days
and events
These events and activities are held during school holidays
and weekends at various venues e.g. libraries, Children’s
Centres and Lifelong Learning centres. Come along and
have some fun as a family and try:

Progression
Family Learning provides opportunities for mums, dads,
grandparents and carers to:
• Access advice and guidance and next steps through
the National Careers Service.
• Gain qualifications in national literacy and numeracy
tests and accreditation through City and Guilds and
Ascentis.
• Progress onto further learning opportunities such
as ICT, ESOL, Skills for Life, Health, Arts and Crafts,
Leisure courses and other Family Learning courses
• Move on to training for employment and voluntary
work
