The self-test below will help you to choose which level of course you need.

For beginners. You

You will learn enough
spoken and written
language for everyday
routine situations

You want to be able
to “get by” in the
language, with some
confidence.
You will need to do one
or two hours per week
learning at home.
You should choose
an “Introduction to”
language class.
You are probably able to do
the following in the present
tense:
• Talk simply about
yourself and your family
• Deal with simple
shopping
• Ask for and understand
simple directions
• Tell the time and date
You would like to develop
your speaking and writing
skills in a wider range of
situations. You want to
increase your confidence.
You will need to do 2+ hours
per week learning at home.
You should choose a Level 1
qualification or a
Year 2 language class.
You are probably
already able to, with
more confidence:
• Say what you did last
week or on your last
holiday
• Say what you are going to
do next weekend
• Make arrangements face
to face or on the phone
• Speak about a limited
range of routine topics
You would like to be able
to express opinions and
give reasons and cope with
increasingly unpredictable
situations in the language.
You want to build your
confidence. You will need
to do 2-3 hours per week
learning at home.
You should choose a Level 2
qualification or a
Year 3 language class.
Please note you must speak to a member of the languages team before enrolling.
Courses with a qualification
You are probably
able to talk with
some confidence:
• About routine subjects
like family, shopping,
travel, work, leisure etc.
• to give opinions about
them using some past
and future tenses with
some understanding of
grammar
• Respond quickly to
unpredictable situations
You would like to further
develop your skills and to
build your confidence.
You will need to do some
extra hours learning at home
each week.
You should choose one of the
conversation courses.
These courses are delivered using the Awarding Body Consortium (ABC). Fees include examination/accreditation costs
where applicable.
You will concentrate on the everyday language you would use when visiting a country or when communicating in the UK
with visitors from other countries. You will also learn about customs in the countries where the language you are learning
is spoken. You will build up a folder of work including listening, speaking, reading and writing. Your progress will be
assessed by your tutor in the classroom.
Level 1 includes travel, telephoning, medical matters, banking, hiring a car and written communication. This level of study
is the equivalent of GCSE Grades D to G.
Level 2 extends the skills you have gained in listening, speaking, reading and writing. It includes planning holidays, making
appointments and problem solving. This level of study is the equivalent of GCSE Grades A - C.
