British sign language (BSL) Signing and Receiving Skills in British sign language Awarding Body Consortium (ABC) courses are at three levels: Entry level 3, Level 1 and Level 2 These courses are offered at three levels: Entry level 3, Level 1 and Level 2 for anyone interested in learning British sign language. They will prepare learners to communicate using BSL within everyday situations. It is recommended that Level 1 is a minimal requirement for work but you must have completed the Entry level 3 certificate prior to Level 1. Courses without a qualification Courses without a qualification run for 30 weeks in total, fees indicated below are for 10 weeks per term - Autumn, Spring and Summer terms complete a 30 week programme. The major focus is on spoken language, supported as necessary by listening, reading and writing. Years 1 to 3 include topics such as introductions, dates, time, food and drink, shopping, accommodation, directions and travel, services and emergencies. In conversation classes topics vary with the needs and interests of the group. These courses do not have an examination. For most beginners it is necessary to join the course at the start of Year 1 and progress through the different stages. It is recommended that you do not begin studying at the second or third term of a Year 1 class. However, if you have some language experience please contact the languages team for advice. Year 1 ‘Introduction to..’ ‘Move on in..’ and ‘Step up in……. Introduce you to the language and are intended for complete beginners. Years 2 and 3 Courses Conversation courses up to Intermediate Languages Courses Continue to build on the skills and knowledge of Year 1. British sign language, First Steps Are suitable for learners who have completed a Language Year 3 course or equivalent, such as GCSE. The levels of the Intermediate Conversation courses vary and a discussion with a member of the languages team is required before enrolment.
