It is without a doubt that Liverpool
is first and foremost “the
promised land” for true fans of
The Beatles. It is here that the famous
four were born: Paul Mc-
Cartney, John Lennon, George
Harrison and Ringo Starr. The
boys who, in the 1950s, would
revolutionise rock music. Loyal
fans travel from all over the
world to visit the city in which
their idols lived and created
their music and Beatlemania is
still well and truly alive in Merseyside
County. This is obvious
from the very outset of our journey
as we land at John Lennon
Airport – the only British airport
named after a famous person.
The first, and largest, attraction
on our 'have to' list, The Beatles
Story, is at Albert Dock. With its
amazing audio-visual effects, a
visit to this museum is as close
to time-travel as is possible at
the moment and it's a guaranteed
crowd-pleaser. Visitors
travel to America with the
Beatles, get in the Yellow Submarine,
visit the room in which
Lennon wrote ‘Imagine’ or can
become part of the group on
the album-cover of Sgt Pepper’s
Lonely Hearts Club Band. It’s
worth adding that The Beatles
Story is the first museum in
Great Britain offering an audiotour
in Polish. The museum’s
director, Jerry Goldman, does
nothing to hide his bias in this
case – and stems from his
grandmother’s heritage.
All fans, especially the most
ardent, have a deep desire to
know as many details as possible
from the lives of their favourite
band-members. This next attraction
allows for this need to
be met. The National Trust has
opened up Paul McCartney’s
family home at 20 Forthlin Road,
as well as Mendips, the home of
Mimi, John Lennon’s aunt, at
251 Menlove Avenue. It is an unforgettable
experience to take a
peak into their youth, hear funny
anecdotes from their childhood
and to see archived photos.
The Cavern Club at Mathew
Street, where the Beatles played
almost 300 performances, is a
very special place. It is here that
Brian Epstein first heard The
Beatles on 9 November 1961.
This event resulted in the signing
of the Beatles’ first contract
with EMI thus launching the ca-
reers of the four young Liverpudlians
