was demolished, with the current
one being smaller and only a
faithful replica of the original. Fif-
teen thousand bricks from the
original Cavern were used in the
construction of the new premises.
Take a walk down Penny Lane,
drop into Strawberry Field – both
inspirations for the songs of the
same name and were on the
most famous and successful
double-A-sided single released
in 1967. For unique and original
Beatles memorabilia, The Beatles
Shop is the place to go – the assortment
is mind-boggling.
The perfect complement to a
tour in the footsteps of the ‘fab
four’ is a stay at the Hard Days
Night Hotel. Admittedly, this
hotel was opened in 2008, but
its exclusive interior in a 19th
century tenement is closely related
to The Beatles. Fans will be
impressed.
Liverpool, however, is not just
The Beatles. In 2008, the city was
the European Capital of Culture,
which was a reflection of the
number of museums and galleries
the city has to offer – and of
course, their quality! You really
need to visit at least several of
them. And you don’t even need
to go very far because most of
them are at Albert Dock – a stunning
complex of brick buildings.
The Tate Liverpool is an enormous
gallery of contemporary
art where visitors can enjoy the
works of the likes of Pablo Picasso,
Henry Moore, Andy Warhol
and Salvador Dalo. To understand
the issue on an international
scale, not just in a historical
context, the International Slavery
Museum is particularly noteworthy.
Even land-lubbers will
enjoy the Merseyside Maritime
Museum. For centuries, the huge
port in Liverpool was Britain’s
gateway to the world. The diversity
of the exhibitions is representative
of the heritage of days
gone by – a world of privateers,
buyers, the first transatlantic
vessels and naval ships.
Architecturally, Liverpool perfectly
links the historical aspect with
the modern. This is best-illustrated
by the two cathedrals on
Hope St. The first of these is the
contemporary Roman-Catholic
Metropolitan Cathedral, known
as “Paddy’s Wigwam”. It boasts
the world’s largest stained-glass
vault. Liverpool Cathedral on
the other hand, is the largest
Anglican house of worship in
Great Britain. Its bells weigh 31
tons! Apparently, 10 year-old Paul
McCartney wanted to sing in the
church choir at the cathedral, but
he wasn’t accepted because he
couldn’t read music…
And now for a compulsory stop
on the itinerary. Acknowledged
as the most stunning example
of neoclassical architecture,
St Georges Hall really is breathtaking.
the main entrance crowned by
