5 Cost effectiveness<br />

That the majority <strong>of</strong> the available empirical cost-benefit analysis discussed the imple-<br />

mentation <strong>of</strong> needleless IV systems might be due <strong>to</strong> the fact that these systems <strong>of</strong>fer the<br />

opportunity for a complete elimination <strong>of</strong> NSI in this area. Even when the same type <strong>of</strong><br />

equipment was under consideration, the reported results were in conflict due <strong>to</strong> differ-<br />

ences in calculations: some investiga<strong>to</strong>rs were able <strong>to</strong> <strong>of</strong>fset the higher purchase costs<br />

associated with the safety devices with the smaller number <strong>of</strong> sets needed, while others<br />

were not.<br />

Finally, most <strong>of</strong> the cost-benefit evaluations were done during the early 1990s; their<br />

relevance <strong>to</strong> the current day cannot be assessed. The purchase prices for both the<br />

safer devices and the standard devices are likely <strong>to</strong> have changed, in addition <strong>to</strong> the<br />

cost <strong>of</strong> other fac<strong>to</strong>rs contributing <strong>to</strong> the <strong>to</strong>tal cost <strong>of</strong> a NSI.<br />
