Accord<strong>in</strong>g to the Credit Bank of Bujumbura, 12 there are about 10,000 <strong>Burundi</strong>ans liv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> the European Union (EU), 3,000 <strong>in</strong> the USA <strong>and</strong> Canada, <strong>and</strong> about 300 <strong>in</strong> Asia (de<br />

Bryun <strong>and</strong> Wets, 2006). This group of <strong>Burundi</strong>an immigrants is composed of first -<br />

generation migrants who moved to Europe dur<strong>in</strong>g the first conflict <strong>in</strong> 1972, students<br />

who rema<strong>in</strong>ed upon completion of their studies, bus<strong>in</strong>ess people, <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>dividuals who<br />

migrated via family reunification procedures over the past two decades. Out of the<br />

10,000 <strong>Burundi</strong>ans <strong>in</strong> Europe, about 3,300 are liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the Netherl<strong>and</strong>s accord<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

official figures (CBS, 2009). The majority came as political asylum seekers or through<br />

other procedures such as family reunification (Zlotnik, 1998). Although their numbers<br />

are not known, undocumented <strong>Burundi</strong>ans, some of whom had their asylum requests<br />
