C. Swaziland
Swaziland is more fortunate and better endiwed than the
two other former British High Commission Territories,
Botswana and Lesotho. The country is relatively prosperous
with an abundance of natural resouz.ces. It is also not
quite as vulnerable to political and econoami presiures fr.ou
unfriendly neighbors, in part becaus* its eastern border
adoins the now independent black state of Mozambique (map
Swaziland also differs in its handling and suppcrt of
Unlike the two previous states, the Government of
Swazi fr-m hcmes in South Af:ica studying in Swaziland, who
could become "instant" refugees -f relations with the Republic
deteriorated. Idditionall,, the PAC and ANC arrange for the
transit of perhaps a dozen refugees a month enroute to
Mozambique and other destinations.
The GOS separates and, to a degree, isolates registered
political refugees, Aividinq women and men into two camps,
the latter some 40 k.lometers from Mbabane; and both are
closed to public access. Students are bussed under supervision
to schools in tho capitol. Such restrictive procedurex
are necessary, Swazi Wficials assert, in order to protect
