E. Zambia
Its central geographical location nas caused Zambia to
35.
become a haven for refugees (or Freedom Fighters) fromi
nearly a.l the trouble spots in Southern Africa (map attached).
Its role is not passive, however, for as one of the "frontline"
states, Zambia, in the name of African solidarity,
actively s-pports many of the parties and factions training
and wcrkin to achieve the liberation of their respective
homelands. :.s President, Kenneth Kaunda, has been eminently
successful in dramatizing his country's role in the liberation
stugg.e, and, at the same time, in collect.ng worldwide
support and assistance for Zambia's own development.
Zambia, partly in compliancp with wishes of various
liberation parties, tends to segregate and, to a degree,
isolate various refugee groups. Access to camps, especially
where military training is conducted, has been strictly
.imited even for refugee donor organizaticns or countries,
al.hough there are sc=e signs of relaxa. in in these :est.rictiOns.
:n Zambia as of September 5, there were an estimated
22,000 pe:sons who could be defined as -efuqees. These
included some 13,200 Angolans, 2,450 ":ambians, 5,000 ZAPU
Zimbabweans, 300-400 ZANU (Mugabe) Zimbabweans, 200 Zanu
(Sithole) Zimbabweans, 100 South Africans, 200 Malawians,
200 Ugandans, and 100 miscellaneous individuals. The majority
are in camps; about a thousand are resettled; about 500 are
in Lusaka and largely self-sufficie:t; and 3CO are receiving
individual care in locations near Lusaka (soe Appendix C).
There are also as many as 15,000 Freedom Fighters in
training throughout the country and 2,600 children (possibly
of Freedom Fighters) in schools in Lusaka.
