<strong>MCI</strong> 6280 Painting: Self Portrait by Loïs Mailou Jones<br />

The painting is undergoing a conservation treatment in preparation for an exhibition loan.<br />
The painting will be surface cleaned, and areas of loss will be consolidated, filled, and inpainted<br />
by SAAM conservators. It is hoped that the areas sampled will provide material identification<br />
that will assist the SAAM conservators in understanding the material techniques used by this<br />
artist and provide information which will assist in the preservation, storage, care, and display<br />
parameters of this artifact.<br />
The primary objective is to identify the coating so we may select the appropriate methods<br />
for preservation and protection of the surface, and the secondary objective to investigate the<br />
ground and paint composition in order to contribute to the body-of-knowledge on material<br />
techniques used by the artist.<br />
