MCI 6206 Morphological Comparison of Alcohol and Formalin Preparation to 3M
Novec Fluids
MCI Staff: Mel J. Wachowiak, Paula T. DePriest
The purpose of the analysis was to determine if the Novec fluids provided tissue
preservation that was at least as good as the traditional formalin or alcohol methods.
Preparations of invertebrate specimens tissues (earthworm) were prepared for microtomy,
stained, and documented. All were prepared in the 3M research laboratory. The earthworm
tissues stored in various fluids: formalin, alcohol, and 3M Novec were prepared by microtomy,
stained for light microscopical examination, and documented. Formalin fixed tissue subsequently
stored in Novec was at least as good as alcohol preserved tissue after one year of storage in each
solution.
