Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus<br />

Severity Barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) is prevalent in high rainfall areas.<br />

Aphids introduce and spread the virus in the crop.<br />

Source and spread Volunteers, spread by aphids.<br />

Main hosts All cereals, many grass weeds.<br />

Plant part attacked Leaves.<br />

Symptoms Yellowing of leaves begins at the tips, yellow stripes extend to the base,<br />

and leaves turn red.<br />

Symptoms may not be evident until sometime after the initial infection.<br />

More commonly seen in patches, especially at paddock margins.<br />

Early infection results in dwarfing of the plant and sterile panicles.<br />

Control methods<br />
