Louis Vuitton
– a valuable and prestigious brand
The Louis Vuitton brand is the story about unique craftsmanship, timeless design, outspoken business talent,
and an iconic logo. The fashion house was founded in the mid nineteenth century by Frenchman Louis
Vuitton Malletier (1821-1892), who at the age of 16 came to an epoch-making decision. He wanted to become
a trunk maker. He walked the 400 kilometres from his hometown in eastern France to Paris, where he
got employment in Monsieur Maréchal’s prominent workshop.
The means of transportation of those days – horse carriages, ships, and trains – made heavy demands on
the sturdiness of trunks, which should be able to protect the property of their owner during often turbulent
voyages. Louis Vuitton was a true master of his trade. He made a meteoric career, and soon became one of
Paris’ most popular trunk makers.
His reputation reached the French Royal Court, and the wife of Napoleon III, Empress Eugénie, placed a very
special order. She needed some travel trunks, which were easy to stack, and at the same time shaped in a
way so that her wardrobe was not creased. Louis Vuitton started his production of flat trunks made from
rainproof canvas, shaped so that they would fit in places such as a ship’s cargo hold.
In 1854 the very focused trunk maker opened his own workshop in Rue Neuve-des-Capucines in Paris. In
order to protect the products of the house from copying, the famous LV-monogram was added in 1896. This
became the start of a large, international business empire. Today, Louis Vuitton is one of the world’s most
valuable and prestigious brands, whose line of bags and suitcases is the epitome of ultimate luxury.
