4. Kicks from <strong>the</strong> penalty mark<br />
The third referee must be positioned in <strong>the</strong> half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> pitch where <strong>the</strong> penalty<br />
kicks are not being taken, toge<strong>the</strong>r with <strong>the</strong> eligible players. From this position<br />
he observes <strong>the</strong> players’ behaviour and checks that no player takes ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />
penalty kick before <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r eligible players in his team have done so.<br />
The timekeeper is positioned at <strong>the</strong> timekeeper’s table and records all <strong>the</strong> goals<br />
scored.<br />
Assistant referee signals (mandatory)<br />
The assistant referees must give <strong>the</strong> signals for a team’s fi fth accumulated foul<br />
and a request for a time-out, indicating with <strong>the</strong>ir arms <strong>the</strong> bench <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> team<br />
that has <strong>com</strong>mitted its fi fth accumulated foul or requested <strong>the</strong> time-out.<br />
Acoustic signal<br />
The acoustic signal is an essential signal in a match to be used only when<br />
necessary in order to gain <strong>the</strong> attention <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> referee.<br />
Situations when <strong>the</strong> acoustic signal is mandatory:<br />
• end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> periods <strong>of</strong> play<br />
• notice <strong>of</strong> a request for a time-out<br />
• notice <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> a time-out<br />
• <strong>com</strong>munication <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fi fth accumulated foul by a team<br />
• notice <strong>of</strong> incorrect behaviour by substitutes or team <strong>of</strong>fi cials<br />
• notice <strong>of</strong> an incorrect substitution<br />
• notice <strong>of</strong> a disciplinary error <strong>com</strong>mitted by <strong>the</strong> referees<br />
• notice <strong>of</strong> external interference<br />
If during <strong>the</strong> match <strong>the</strong> timekeeper sounds <strong>the</strong> acoustic signal by mistake,<br />
<strong>the</strong> referees must stop <strong>the</strong> match if <strong>the</strong>y consider this action to interfere with<br />
play. If <strong>the</strong> referees stop <strong>the</strong> match, <strong>the</strong>y must restart play with a dropped ball<br />
from <strong>the</strong> position <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ball when play was stopped, unless play was stopped<br />
inside <strong>the</strong> penalty area, in which case one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> referees drops <strong>the</strong> ball on <strong>the</strong><br />
penalty area line at <strong>the</strong> point nearest to where <strong>the</strong> ball was located when play<br />
was stopped. If <strong>the</strong> sound <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> acoustic signal does not interfere with play,<br />
<strong>the</strong> referees give clear signals to play on.
