LAW 12 – FOULS AND MISCONDUCT<br />
If a substitute directs an object at <strong>the</strong> ball with a part <strong>of</strong> his body o<strong>the</strong>r than his<br />
hands, thus causing his team to be playing with an extra player:<br />
• if <strong>the</strong> ball is in play and <strong>the</strong> object strikes <strong>the</strong> ball, <strong>the</strong> referees must stop<br />
play and ei<strong>the</strong>r send him <strong>of</strong>f for a double caution, both for unsporting<br />
behaviour, <strong>the</strong> fi rst caution for entering <strong>the</strong> pitch without <strong>the</strong> referees’<br />
permission and <strong>the</strong> second for directing <strong>the</strong> object, or send him <strong>of</strong>f directly<br />
if by doing so he denied a goal or an obvious goalscoring opportunity.<br />
They restart play with an indirect free kick to <strong>the</strong> opposing team from <strong>the</strong><br />
position <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ball when play was stopped (see Law 13 – Position <strong>of</strong> free<br />
kick)<br />
• if <strong>the</strong> ball is in play and <strong>the</strong> object does not strike <strong>the</strong> ball, <strong>the</strong> referees must<br />
stop play if <strong>the</strong>y cannot apply <strong>the</strong> advantage and send him <strong>of</strong>f for a double<br />
caution, both for unsporting behaviour, <strong>the</strong> fi rst caution for entering <strong>the</strong><br />
pitch without <strong>the</strong> referees’ permission and <strong>the</strong> second for throwing <strong>the</strong><br />
object. They restart play with an indirect free kick to <strong>the</strong> opposing team<br />
from <strong>the</strong> position <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ball when play was stopped (see Law 13 – Position<br />
