For this new edition of The Code Model of Communication: A Powerful Metaphor in
Linguistic Metatheory, I have made minor changes, which I hope will make the discussion
more clear. I have also corrected errors in citations and references. I am extremely
grateful to Mae Zook, of the Academic Affairs Section of SIL International, for her
assistance in editing. I also appreciate Barbara Thomas, of the Graduate Institute of
Applied Linguistics, for her assistance in tracking down references.
An earlier edition of this work served as my dissertation in my Ph.D. studies at The
University of Texas at Arlington, from which I graduated in 1999. I am deeply grateful to
Kenneth A. McElhanon, who, along with Thomas N. Headland, Robert J. Reddick,
Donald A. Burquest, Karl J. Franklin, and Andrew F. Gallman, gave me guidance during
my dissertation research. Dr. Reddick deserves special mention, as his insightful teaching
on code model presuppositions in discourse studies served as a springboard for this study.
I am also grateful for helpful assistance from the late Dr. Kenneth L. Pike and his wife,
Evelyn Pike, who graciously provided opportunities for me to discuss with them the
history of linguistics.
Finally, I wish to thank my wife, forever-friend and long-suffering editor, Laura
Blackburn. Completion of this study would have been impossible were it not for her love
and constant encouragement. Similar gratitude is extended to my children, who suffered
patiently through their daddy’s incessant jabbering about theory (“Daddy, what are you
talking about?”).
