2:7 he pleases. A better translation gives the meaning that love is not to be disturbed until it is
proper to do so. Once, when Mary was worshipping at the feet of Jesus, her sister Martha
rebuked her for not doing other household chores. Jesus came to the defense of Mary and said in
essence, “Do not disturb love until it is proper to do so.” Mary had chosen to be close to Christ
(Luke 10:41, 42).
The Shulamite Maiden the Expectation of Love
8 The voice of my beloved! Behold, he cometh leaping upon the mountains,
skipping upon the hills.
9 My beloved is like a roe or a young hart: behold, he standeth behind our wall,
he looketh forth at the windows, shewing himself through the lattice.
2:9 like a roe or a young hart. The symbolism is that of physical strength, masculine behavior and
grace of movement.
The Shulamite Maiden quoting Solomon
10 My beloved spake, and said unto me, Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come
away.
11 For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone;
12 The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and
the voice of the turtle [turtledove] is heard in our land;
13 The fig tree putteth forth her green figs, and the vines with the tender grape
give a good smell. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.
“A little while’—the Lord shall come,
And we shall wander here no more;
He’ll take us to His Father’s home,
Where He for us is gone before—
To dwell with Him, to see His face,
And sing the glories of His grace.”
Solomon
14 O my dove, that art in the clefts of the rock, in the secret places of the stairs,
let me see thy countenance, let me hear thy voice; for sweet is thy voice, and thy
countenance is comely.
2:13 clefts of the rock.
