Love has strength. “Love is strong as death.”
Love is jealous which in context means love is firm or unyielding.
Love is enduring. “Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it.”
Love has value. “If a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly
be contemned.”
7 Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man
would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned.
The Brothers of the Shulamite
8 We have a little sister, and she hath no breasts: what shall we do for our sister
in the day when she shall be spoken for?
9 If she be a wall [chaste and pure], we will build upon her a palace of silver: and
if she be a door [loose and immoral], we will inclose her with boards of cedar.
8:8-9 she hath no breasts. The brothers of the Shulamite did not appreciate her nor have hopes of
her maturing and becoming marriageable. To their surprise she captured the heart of the king. In
like manner, the church appears contemptible in the eyes of the world. But she has captured the
heart of the King of kings and Lord of lords.
The Shulamite Maiden Responds
10 I am a wall, and my breasts like towers: then was I in his eyes as one that
found favour.
The Daughters of Jerusalem
11 Solomon had a vineyard at Baal-hamon; he let out the vineyard unto keepers;
every one for the fruit thereof was to bring a thousand pieces of silver.
8:11 Solomon (sol'-o-mun; peaceful), was the son of David and third king of Israel. Following
his reign the United Kingdom divided so that there was the southern kingdom of Judah and the
Northern Kingdom of Israel.
8:11 Baal-Hamon (ba"-al-ha'-mon; lord of the multitude; who rules a crowd), refers to the
location of a vineyard of Solomon in the northern country of Ephraim.
The Shulamite Maiden
12 My vineyard, which is mine, is before me: thou, O Solomon, must have a
thousand [pieces of silver], and those that keep the fruit thereof two hundred.
