Song of Solomon

1 Whither is thy beloved gone, O thou fairest among women? Whither is thy
beloved turned aside? That we may seek him with thee.
The Shulamite Maiden
2 My beloved is gone down into his garden, to the beds of spices, to feed in the
gardens, and to gather lilies.
6:2 into his garden. The Shulamite maiden remembered where she last enjoyed communion with
her lover and returned there. In like manner the Christian should return to his spiritual “Bethel”
where he first met the Lord (Gen. 35:1).
3 I am my beloved's, and my beloved is mine: he feedeth among the lilies.
6:3 I am my beloved’s. Here is the sweet reunion of two hearts as one. The Shulamite maiden has
found her lover and all is once more right. When the heart of a Christian returns to Christ all is
right and tender words of love can be exchanged once more.

4 Thou art beautiful, O my love, as Tirzah, comely as Jerusalem, terrible as an
army with banners.
6:4 Tirzah (tur'-zah; delight), was located 7 miles NE of Shechem. Tirzah was the capital of
Israel until the days of Omri (1 Kings 14:17).
5 Turn away thine eyes from me, for they have overcome me: thy hair is as a
flock of goats that appear from Gilead.
6:5 Gilead (ghil'-e-ad; rugged), refers to a mountain region E of the Jordan River extending from
the Sea of Galilee to the upper end of the Dead Sea.
6 Thy teeth are as a flock of sheep which go up from the washing, whereof every
one beareth twins, and there is not one barren among them.
7 As a piece of a pomegranate are thy temples within thy locks.
8 There are threescore [60] queens, and fourscore [80] concubines, and virgins
without number.
6:8 threescore…fourscore. In time Solomon would embrace 700 queens and 300 concubines (1
Kings 11:3).
