Song of Solomon

1 O that thou wert as my brother, that sucked the breasts of my mother! When I
should find thee without, I would kiss thee; yea, I should not be despised.
8:1 find thee without. The maiden declares she wants to show a more open love for Solomon and
kiss him much like she would shower a nursing baby brother with kisses. The church must find
ways to openly confess her love for Christ and not be ashamed.
2 I would lead thee, and bring thee into my mother's house, who would instruct
me: I would cause thee to drink of spiced wine of the juice of my pomegranate.
8:2 instruct me. Either the maiden wants to be instructed in what pleases Solomon as she shows
him her house or she is willing to be instructed by her mother on how to please a husband. In
either case the Church must be willing to be taught of Christ. Indeed, He has come that he might
give us an understanding.
8:2 pomegranate, refers to a round, red, juicy fruit with a hard rind and numerous seeds (Num.
20:5; Deut. 8:8; Song of Sol. 4:13). The maiden says she will cause Solomon to drink of the best
she has. So the church should give of her best to the Master.
“Give of your best to the Master;
Give of the strength of your youth.
Throw your soul’s fresh, glowing ardor
Into the battle for truth.
Jesus has set the example,
Dauntless was He, young and brave.
Give Him your loyal devotion;
Give Him the best that you have.
Give of your best to the Master;
Give of the strength of your youth.
Clad in salvation’s full armor,
Join in the battle for truth.
Give of your best to the Master;
Give Him first place in your heart.
Give Him first place in your service;
Consecrate every part.
Give, and to you will be given;
God His beloved Son gave.
Gratefully seeking to serve Him,
Give Him the best that you have.
