location in the Great Lakes. Between 1670 <strong>and</strong><br />

1715 a tri-cultural settlement developed at<br />

this location. It must be stressed that<br />

within this community the Indians encountered<br />

the Europeans <strong>and</strong> made the necessary<br />

accommodations whereby they could continue to<br />

survive the cultural encroachment on their<br />

traditional lives. The Indians maintained<br />

their independence <strong>and</strong> interacted with the<br />

<strong>French</strong> primarily around the fur trade.[1] The<br />

religious life of the community seems to have<br />

been of secondary importance. Unfortunately<br />

little indepth research <strong>and</strong> writing has been<br />

undertaken in the past <strong>and</strong> this study will<br />

alleviate this problem.<br />

Designation of the Area. - In the<br />

seventeenth <strong>and</strong> eighteenth centuries the<br />

<strong>French</strong> <strong>and</strong> probably the Indians referred to<br />

the entire region as Michilimackinac.[2] This<br />

includes: a) the area on the north side of
