20th Century Commentary of 1717 Map. -<br />

The Cadillac map which was prepared at the<br />

same time as this relation has not survived.<br />

However, there is an anonymous map in the<br />

Ayer Collection of the Newberry Library in<br />

Chicago (Figure 2) that is believed to date<br />

from 1717 or nearly the same time as the<br />

earliest surviving longh<strong>and</strong> copy of the<br />

Cadillac memoir. This map shows a fort <strong>and</strong><br />

small village on the south side of the<br />

Straits, as well as a larger settlement on<br />

the north side of the Strait in East Moran<br />

Bay. The caption to his map indicates that
