Hurons is immediately to the north of the<br />

Jesuit mission. As in the LaHontan map, it is<br />

pictured as a long <strong>and</strong> narrow village running<br />

roughly east <strong>and</strong> west. Although not shown on<br />

any maps, this would have run parallel to the<br />

Chain Lake drainage channel which flowed<br />

somewhere around where the Driftwood Motel<br />

st<strong>and</strong>s today (1980s) one block north of the<br />

park site.<br />

The location of the Jesuit mission near<br />

the junction of modern Marquette Street <strong>and</strong><br />

State Street <strong>and</strong> the Tionontate village to<br />

the north of it around Glashaw Street, is<br />

compatible with both the LaHontan <strong>and</strong><br />

Anonymous 1717 maps <strong>and</strong> the written<br />

descriptions <strong>and</strong> the archaeological<br />

evidence.[38]<br />

The 1717 map notes that the St. Ignace<br />

community had been ab<strong>and</strong>oned by at least 1717
