settled in the vicinity. When the Jesuits<br />

heard that the Christian Hurons were living<br />

at this site they decided to establish the<br />

mission of the Holy Spirit/Saint Esprit in<br />

the area in 1665. In 1666-1667 Claude<br />

Allouez, S.J. noted that the great village<br />

held 2,000 people living in 45-50 longhouses<br />

<strong>and</strong> there were eight hundred men capable of<br />

bearing arms.[23]<br />

For a number of years this Huron-Odawa<br />

community prospered. It consisted of a number<br />

of Indian villages, a Jesuit mission, trading<br />

center, <strong>and</strong> attracted Indians from through<br />

the Lake Superior region <strong>and</strong> even the<br />

Illinois from the south as early as 1667.<br />

Ojibwa at Sault Ste. Marie. - The<br />

Ojibwa were centered at Sault Ste. Marie<br />

which also had an excellent fishery <strong>and</strong> which<br />

attracted many diverse tribes during the<br />
