occupation.[32] The "fields of the savages"<br />

are located between them. In 1973, traces of<br />

a late seventeenth century or early<br />

eighteenth century garden bed, with a<br />

radiocarbon date of 1720 +-100 (N-1722), were<br />

found at the Gyftakis site adjacent to the<br />

Tionontate village site.[33]<br />

While some of the fields are located on<br />

what modern maps show as swamps, the relative<br />

positioning, if not the site of these<br />

features is probably accurate, <strong>and</strong> is<br />

supported by independent accounts <strong>and</strong> other<br />

maps. It is also significant that there is<br />

no mention of a <strong>French</strong> fort in these accounts<br />

or included on the map. There are two<br />

independent contemporary accounts left by<br />

survivors of the La Salle expedition. Jean<br />

Cavelier, La Salle's brother, simply notes
