INTRODUCTION<br />

This study was originally developed at<br />

the request of the St. Ignace Downtown<br />

Development Agency in 1989. It is a<br />

compilation of existing data which deal with<br />

the tri-cultural settlement of St. Ignace<br />

between 1670 <strong>and</strong> 1715.<br />

The story of the settlement of the<br />

Straits of Mackinac is directly related to<br />

the coming of the <strong>French</strong> into the St.<br />

Lawrence valley in the seventeenth century.<br />

Lacking an economic base, the <strong>French</strong> engaged<br />

in the fur trade <strong>and</strong> the Indians became<br />

important partners. The Huron <strong>and</strong> Odawa both<br />

played important roles in this trade. As part<br />

of the <strong>French</strong> plan to acculturate the Indians<br />

into <strong>French</strong> colonial society, Jesuit<br />

missionaries developed missions among the<br />
